Book excerpt: A gumbo of French, Spanish, and American influences, the architecture of New Orleans has always reflected the city's strong Catholic roots. Indeed, St. Louis Cathedral across from Jackson Square stands as perhaps the most widely recognized face of New Orleans. The cathedral, though, is just one of many stunning churches that beautifully reflect the city's long and diverse Catholic heritage. Splendors of Faith showcases thirteen of these historic churches of exceptional architectural and artistic beauty, revealing scenic treasures that lie mostly beyond the well-worn tourist paths. The earliest of the thirteen, St. Louis Cathedral, traces its origin to 1727. The most recent, Immaculate Conception, was built in 1930 but modeled after its mid-nineteenth-century predecessor. The eleven other churches are Blessed Francis Xavier Seelos, Holy Name of Jesus, Mater Dolorosa, Our Lady of the Rosary, St. Anthony of Padua, St. Francis of Assisi, St. Joseph, St. Mary's Assumption, St. Patrick, St. Peter Claver, and St. Stephen. In image and word, photographer Frank J. Methe and historian Charles E. Nolan capture the splendor of these places of worship. Methe provides sumptuously detailed color photographs of the churches and their interior décor. Nolan offers enlightening commentary about each edifice, its congregation, and the rich variety of art forms assembled over the years: architecture, stained glass, statuary, mosaics, paintings, and more. New Orleans Catholics and their churches experienced dramatic change after Hurricane Katrina and the levee breaks. The buildings featured here, some of which suffered major damage in 2005, continue to serve as places of worship, bearing witness to a vibrant cultural component in one of the country's most beloved cities. Splendors of Faith takes readers inside these landmark churches and reveals their aesthetic and historical significance as never before.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What is the relationship between the medieval crusades and the problems of the modern Middle East? Were the crusades the Christian equivalent of Muslim jihad? In this sweeping yet crisp history, Thomas F. Madden offers a brilliant and compelling narrative of the crusades and their contemporary relevance. Placing all of the major crusades within their social, economic, religious, and intellectual environments, Madden explores the uniquely medieval world that led untold thousands to leave their homes, families, and friends to march in Christ’s name to distant lands. From Palestine and Europe's farthest reaches, each crusade is recounted in a clear, concise narrative. The author gives special attention as well to the crusades’ effects on the Islamic world and the Christian Byzantine East.

Book The St Louis Irish

    Book Details:
  • Author : William Barnaby Faherty
  • Publisher : Missouri History Museum
  • Release : 2001
  • ISBN : 9781883982393
  • Pages : 298 pages

Download or read book The St Louis Irish written by William Barnaby Faherty and published by Missouri History Museum. This book was released on 2001 with total page 298 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A French-founded frontier village that transformed into a booming nineteenth-century industrial mecca dominated by Germans, the city of St. Louis nonetheless resounds from the influence of Irish immigrants. Both the history and the maps of the city are dotted with the enduring legacies of familiar celts--John Mullanphy, John O'Fallon, Cardinal John J. Glennon--but the true marks of the Irish in St. Louis were made by the common immigrants--those who fled their homeland to settle in the Kerry Patch on St. Louis's near north side--and their battle to maintain cultural, ethnographic, and religious roots. Popular local historian William Barnaby Faherty, S.J., offers readers a look into the history and effects of the Irish immigration to St. Louis. The author can now be placed within a rich Irish heritage in the world of publishing: Joseph Charless, editor of the first newspaper west of the Mississippi, the Missouri Gazette; William Marion Reedy, editor of the Mirror and nineteenth-century literary mogul; Joseph McCullagh, editor of the Globe-Democrat in the late nineteenth century; and controversial author Kate (O'Flaherty) Chopin. The Irish in St. Louis is an enticing ethnographic history of one nationality clinging to its roots in a melting- pot American city. Both visitor and native St. Louisian, Irish or not, will relish this history of one of St. Louis's most enduring communities.

Book History of the St Louis Cathedral of New Orleans Classic Reprint

Download or read book History of the St Louis Cathedral of New Orleans Classic Reprint written by Louis J. Loewenstein and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-06 with total page 76 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of the St. Louis Cathedral, of New Orleans Chartres (formerly Conde), St. Anne and Royal streets and St. Antoine alley, the later named in honor of father antoine, the first curate of the church. A wooden and adobe structure was erected under the auspices of the French Government, and in honor of the King of France, named the Church of St. Ignatius, about 1720, from which time date the archives of the Catholic Church in New Orleans. In January, 1721, Father Charlevoix, a Jesuit missionary, reached New Orleans from Canada by way of the Illinois and the Mississippi rivers, and in his description of the infant city he sums it up as consisting of one hundred cabins, placed without much order, a large wooden ware house, two or three dwelling houses that would not' have adorned a vil lage, and a miserable storehouse which had been at first occupied as a chapel - a shed being now used for this purpose. The population of the city did not then exceed 200 persons. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
