Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Catholic Fortnightly Review, 1905, Vol. 12 I am satisfied that those who oppose this journal and the causes it strives to serve, will dislike and fear it none the less if it appear but twice a month; while its friends and supporters will prob ably relish its visits all the more keenly for their increased rarity. A word about the change of title. This journal was begun in the great metropolis on Lake Michigan, in 1893, as the chicago review. When after issuing the first number in a large edition, I made application at the Post Office for the second-class privilege, it turned out that another paper had already been entered under that name. The new venture having been advertised extensively, I did not like to drop the distinguishing title of review, and the re fore simply cut out the chicago. Thus my little journal acquired the broad name which has so often during the past eleven yea rs. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Catholic Fortnightly Review, Vol. 18: 1911 Dr. Amy E. Tanner has recently, in conjunction with Dr. G. Stanley Hall, President of Clark University, made a careful investigation of the "mediumship" of the celebrated Mrs. Piper, whose "spirit messages" have been so widely heralded as proofs that the dead can and do communicate with the living. The results of this investigation are now before us in a volume titled Studies in Spiritism by Amy E. Tanner. Introduction by G. Stanley Hall (New York: D. Appleton Co. $2.50). A good part of the volume besides the Introduction is written by President Hall, and it includes his personal notes of the seances which he and Dr. Tanner held with Mrs. Piper. These seances were unusual both in the manner in which they were conducted, and the light they throw on the problems involved. For some time a number of those interested in psychical investigation have felt that in order to probe to the bottom of mediumistic communications, it is necessary to inquire closely into the exact condition of the medium while entranced. Pierre Janet long ago pointed out resemblances between certain phases of mediumship and the actions of hysterical patients when hypnotized. More recently Profs. Lombroso and Morselli, after separate clinical examinations, definitely pronounced the Italian medium, Eusapia Palladino, a true hysterical. It seemed a legitimate inference that possibly all mediums, when falling into the trance state, pass into a condition of hysterical dissociation involving the extreme suggestibility, hyperaesthesia of the senses, and other stigmata characteristic of hysteria. If this were so, the fact could readily be ascertained by the application of a few diagnostic tests, and a new vantage point would be gained for the study of the phenomena manifested during the trance. This is precisely what President Hall and Dr. Tanner have done in the case of Mrs. Piper. With her consent, they made her the subject of a number of experiments, utilizing the ingenious resources of modern psychopathology to explore her trance condition. As a result they have been able to make some interesting and helpful discoveries. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. This book was released on 2017-12-16 with total page 718 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Catholic Fortnightly Review, 1912, Vol. 19 The history of Catholic missions, past and present, offers a strong argument for'the divine institution of the Church. Tell Catholics of the life, labors, and sufferings of our apostles among the savages, and they will be deeply moved. They are ready to make any sacrifice to aid our pioneers in their efforts to extend Christ's Kingdom for the salvation of many millions. Their own faith will grow deeper and stronger; they will be more unselfish and generous when it comes to erecting a church or a parish school. The missionary diet is an excellent medicine for modern church evils. Missionary activity, both for home and foreign missions, is not only a fruit of practical religion; but also its cause and promoter. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Fortnightly Review, Vol. 12: July 1 to December 1, 1872 11' would be a mistake to think that the republican movement in France has only a political character. The schools of science have also a powerful in uence in the development of our ideas. Among them all the most prominent is the Positive School, whose general tendency is to substitute for theology and even metaphysics the purely human ideas which are indicated by reason, strengthened by experience, in harmony with nature, innate in the spirit, foreign to every transcendental tendency, and opposed to the supernatural. The series of fundamental ideas of this school is not at this moment a part of our theme, but its in uence is clearly seen in the political and social tendency of the republican spirit of our time: Since the fourteenth century human reason has tended to rebel against the theocratic rule, and the human will to revolt against the feudal rule. This double spirit of opposition led in the Latin peoples to a monarchical and plebeian dictatorship; in the germanic-saxon peoples, to an aristocratic and Protestant dictatorship. But while this was taking place in the political and social world, human reason was gradually freeing itself by analytic efforts from theological ideas. The eighteenth century did much to accomplish this work. Political systems absorb ideas, as the plant the juices of the earth in which it grows. Three capital facts indicated the termination of the old theocratic state; first, the expulsion of the Jesuits, the army of authority and theology; second, the reforms of Target, which tended to found society upon a positive basis; third, the American revolution. All these facts were necessary preliminaries to the French revolution. This revolution was born in the midst of illusions, fancying it was to harmonize its new ideas with the ancient monarchy; but the annihilation of the monarchy was the first result of the revolution. There was no doubt about the matter he really wished to go. His master (the proprietor of the hotel) had asked him whether he was not undertaking too much. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Fortnightly Review, Vol. 9: January 1 to June 1, 1871; Vol. XV, Old Series I may remark, by way of preface, that in consequence of the extent and the rapidity of the latest development of affairs in Europe, our political parties, as such, have not yet assumed a definite attitude in the main questions arising from it. Nay, it is extremely probable that they will for the most part be dissolved and assume new forms, under the in uence of the altered circumstances. What I am about to' say, therefore, can only be regarded as expressing my own individual Opinions, and not as the programme of a large and united party. To make up for this, I have the advantage of being free to express my personal convictions unfettered by the trammels of party. And there exists at present such an unanimity of feeling in Germany that it is hardly possible to mistake its nature and direction. This throws himself on God, and unperplexed Seeking shall find him. VOL. XXU, n.s. G G Emerson. Essay Ok Friendship. Let me be alone to the end of the world rather than that my friend should overstep, hy a word or a look, his real sympathy. I am equally baulked by antagonism and by compliance. Let him not cease an instant to be himself. The only joy I have in his being mine is that the not mine is mine. I hate, where I looked for a manly furtherance, or at least a manly resistance, to find a mush of concession. Better be a nettle in the side of your friend than his echo. The condition which high friendship demands is ability to do without it. That high office requires great and sublime parts. There must be very two before there can be very one. Let it be an alliance of two large, formidable natures mutually beheld, mutually feared, before yet they recognise the deep identify which beneath these disparities unites them. He is only fit for this society who is magnanimous; who is sure that greatness and goodness are always economy; who is not swift to intermeddle with his fortunes. Let hun not intermeddle with this. Leave to the diamond its ages to grow, nor expect to accelerate the births of the eternal. Friendship demands a religious treatment. "We talk of choosing our...
