Book excerpt: In this collection of Sherlock Holmes adventures, the intrepid detective and his faithful companion Dr. Watson examine and solve twelve cases that puzzle clients, baffle the police and provide readers with the thrill of the chase. SHERLOCK HOLMES, the gaunt, ascetic, ruthlessly logical pursuer of crime and mystery created by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, needs no introduction. The adventures of this sharply witty and moody detective and his lovably pedantic and faithful friend Dr. Watson are a perennial source of inspiration to lovers of crime fiction. SIR ARTHUR CONAN DOYLE was born in Edinburgh. A doctor by profession, it was while waiting for patients that he began to write. The exploits of Sherlock Holmes and his companion in adventure and chronicler, Dr. Watson, soon catapulted Doyle to international status.

He is most noted for his stories about the detective Sherlock Holmes, which are generally considered a major innovation in the field of crime fiction, and for the adventures of Professor Challenger. He was a prolific writer whose other works include science fiction stories, historical novels, plays and romances, poetry, and non-fiction. His first significant work was A Study in Scarlet, which appeared in Beeton's Christmas Annual for 1887 and featured the first appearance of Sherlock Holmes, who was partially modelled after his former university professor, Joseph Bell. Other works include The Firm of Girdlestone (1890), The Captain of the Polestar (1890), The Doings of Raffles Haw (1892), Beyond the City (1892), The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes (1892), The Exploits of Brigadier Gerard (1896), The Great Boer War (1900), The Green Flag (1900), The Hound of the Baskervilles (1902), and The Lost World (1912).

Book excerpt: It was pleasant to Dr. Watson to find himself once more in the untidy room of the first floor in Baker Street which had been the starting-point of so many remarkable adventures. He looked round him at the scientific charts upon the wall, the acid-charred bench of chemicals, the violin-case leaning in the corner, the coal-scuttle, which contained of old the pipes and tobacco. Finally, his eyes came round to the fresh and smiling face of Billy, the young but very wise and tactful page, who had helped a little to fill up the gap of loneliness and isolation which surrounded the saturnine figure of the great detective.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Case Book of Sherlock Holmes contains twelve stories written about the legendary consulting detective by his creator Arthur Conan Doyle. Like all the other Sherlock Holmes adventures, these stories were originally published in the Strand Magazine, in this case between October 1921 and April 1927. What sets the stories collected in the Case Book of Sherlock Holmes from all other anthologies is that that they represent the winding down of a literary sensation. These are the last original mysteries of Holmes to be published in the Strand and this is the last collection of original stories penned by Doyle.Although new editions sometimes reorder the stories, the order in which they appeared when The Case Book of Sherlock Holmes was originally published (in chronological ordering according to their serial publication date) is as follows:"The Adventure of the Mazarin Stone" (1921)"The Problem of Thor Bridge" (1922)"The Adventure of the Creeping Man" (1923)"The Adventure of the Sussex Vampire" (1924)"The Adventure of the Three Garridebs" (1924)"The Adventure of the Illustrious Client" (1924)"The Adventure of the Three Gables" (1926)"The Adventure of the Blanched Soldier" (1926)"The Adventure of the Lion's Mane" (1926)"The Adventure of the Retired Colourman" (1926)"The Adventure of the Veiled Lodger" (1927)"The Adventure of Shoscombe Old Place" (1927)Some of the selections that that appear in The Case Book of Sherlock Holmes are the only remaining original Holmes stories written by Doyle that are not in the public domain. More will be added according to copyright law expiration dates until the year 2023, at which point all of the Holmes adventures will officially be considered public domain.

Sir Arthur Conan Doyle understood that these twelve stories about the genius detective would be his farewell to him, and he certainly took risks with the narrative, at times departing from his standard approach. In this particular book, more than in any other, he appears to have relaxed and gotten creative with his style. Some plots are better spelled out than others, but they are all interesting. There are stories in the collection told by Sherlock himself, and one of them, which happened during Holmes' retirement, takes place mostly on the beach. It's an amusing departure from the detective's usual habitat. Doyle also allowed himself some sentimentality, particularly in the story "The Adventure Of The Three Garridebs," in which Watson gets into a difficult situation and Holmes is touchingly worried about him. And even loses control of himself for a moment. It's so unexpected! Betrayal, mutilation, and the horrific consequences of infidelity are just some of the themes addressed in the stories in this collection, along with atmospheric insertions of the Gothic that include a bloodsucking vampire, crypts at the middle of the night, and weird bones in an oven.
