He was born in California, and held various jobs, including fruit picker, private investigator, and reporter, before turning to writing in the thirties. In 1946 he began working full-time as a movie and TV screenwriter; and produced the script for the sci-fi classic Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1956), and Out of the Past (1947), based on his own novel, Build My Gallows High.
