Book excerpt: This volume examines how and why Japan annexed Korea in the early twentieth century and discusses the role of foreign powers (particularly the USA) in trying to bring about freedom and independence for Korea. Written by a Korean living in the USA the book is at times a harrowing account of atrocities committed by Japan against Koreans. Entirely impartial it is obviously not, but it nonetheless covers an important if tragic part of history in East Asia.

THE MOVEMENT TO RESTORE INDEPENDENCE APAN, in a true sense, has never conquered Korea, and the Korean people have never recog nized the Japanese as the rightful masters of their land. After entering the country with its military forces at the beginning of the Russo-Japanese War on terms definitely guaranteeing the political independence and territorial integrity of Korea, Japan remained, gradually shifting her position, through pressure of this military occupation thus peaceably obtained in the first instance, from that of a friendly neighbour to adviser, from advisership to protectorate and from protectorate to final annexation. Through the most elaborate system of publicity propaganda and diplomatic manoeuvres, Japan created an impression in the West that she was absorbing Korea for the benefit of the Korean people. Simultaneously, military suppression of the most rigid character was employed in Korea to crush the nationalistic movement of the Koreans. The Korean people did not all submit to Japanese domination so peaceably as the West had supposed. When the Korean army was disbanded in July, 1907, the soldiers of Major Pak's battalion fought and died to the last man against the overwhelming Japanese forces. "Their gallant defense excited the greatest admiration even among their enemies, and it was notable that for a few days, at least, the Japanese spoke with more respect of Korea and the Korean people than they had ever done before."1 Thousands of Koreans organized into volunteer bands to fight, without arms, the Japanese army. They were described in the Japanese press dispatches as bandits. But they Avere no more bandits than were Washington's Continental Army or Garibaldi's Volunteers. In so far as I know, F. A. McKenzie is the...

Book Dr Frank W Schofield

Download or read book Dr Frank W Schofield written by Dougas C. Maplesden and published by Lomaland Books. This book was released on 2005 with total page 80 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: My aim in writing this book was to present a concise description of the life and times of Dr. Frank Schofield, which would be of interest to his former students and professional colleagues as well as many others. Those of us who interacted with him had different reactions. Many feared him, others respected his intelligence and some just didn't care much for him and couldn't wait to get out of this class. This book should clear up some of the reasons Dr. Schofield behaved as he did and perhaps it will go a long way in explaining the man behind the professor. Dr. Schofield was a fascinating teacher and an inspiration to many. It was an enlightenment to follow his distinguished career in veterinary research. His innovative and rewarding experiments in comparative medicine were accomplished well before anyone else thought to forge that path to improve the well being of animals and humans.

Book International Impact of Colonial Rule in Korea 1910 1945

Download or read book International Impact of Colonial Rule in Korea 1910 1945 written by Yong-Chool Ha and published by University of Washington Press. This book was released on 2019-12-23 with total page 356 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In recent years, discussion of the colonial period in Korea has centered mostly on the degree of exploitation or development that took place domestically, while international aspects have been relatively neglected. Colonial discourse, such as characterization of Korea as a “hermit nation,” was promulgated around the world by Japan and haunts us today. The colonization of Korea also transformed Japan and has had long-term consequences for post–World War II Northeast Asia as a whole. Through sections that explore Japan’s images of Korea, colonial Koreans’ perceptions of foreign societies and foreign relations, and international perceptions of colonial Korea, the essays in this volume show the broad influence of Japanese colonialism not simply on the Korean peninsula, but on how the world understood Japan and how Japan understood itself. When initially incorporated into the Japanese empire, Korea seemed lost to Japan’s designs, yet Korean resistance to colonial rule, along with later international fear of Japanese expansion, led the world to rethink the importance of Korea as a future sovereign nation.

Book The Making of the First Korean President

Download or read book The Making of the First Korean President written by Young Ick Lew and published by University of Hawaii Press. This book was released on 2013-11-30 with total page 474 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The only full-scale history of Syngman Rhee’s (1875–1965) early career in English was published nearly six decades ago. Now, in The Making of the First Korean President, Young Ick Lew uncovers little-known aspects of Rhee’s leadership roles prior to 1948, when he became the Republic of Korea’s first president. In this richly illustrated volume, Lew delves into Rhee’s background, investigates his abortive diplomatic missions, and explains how and why he was impeached as the head of the Korean Provisional Government in 1925. He analyzes the numerous personal conflicts between Rhee and other prominent Korean leaders, including some close friends and supporters who eventually denounced him as an autocrat. Rhee is portrayed as a fallible yet charismatic leader who spent his life fighting in the diplomatic and propaganda arena for the independence of his beleaguered nation—a struggle that would have consumed and defeated lesser men. Based on exhaustive research that incorporates archival records as well as secondary sources in Korean, English, and Japanese, The Making of the First Korean President meticulously lays out the key developments of Rhee’s pre-presidential career, including his early schooling in Korea, involvement in the reform movement against the Taehan (“Great Korean”) Empire, and his six-year incarceration in Seoul Prison for a coup attempt on Emperor Kojong. Rhee’s life in the U.S. is also examined in detail: his education at George Washington, Harvard, and Princeton universities; his evangelical work at the Seoul YMCA; his extensive activities in Hawai‘i and attempts to maintain prestige and power among Koreans in the U.S. Lew concludes that, despite the manifold shortcomings in Rhee’s authoritarian leadership, he was undoubtedly best prepared to assume the presidency of South Korea after the onset of the Cold War in the Korean Peninsula. Essential reading for anyone with an interest in modern Korean history, this work will serve as a lasting portrait of one of the pivotal figures in the evolution of Korea as it journeyed from colonial suppression to freedom and security.
