Book The Case of John C Watrous

Download or read book The Case of John C Watrous written by Walace Hawkins and published by . This book was released on 1950 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Watrous became the attorney general of the Republic of Texas in 1838 but soon resigned because of conflicts of interest over land speculation. In 1846, he was appointed by President James K. Polk to a new seat on the United States District Court for the District of Texas, where he became the object of severe criticism and ultimately an unsuccessful impeachment. The main charges against him were violating Texas statutes punishing those dealing in fraudulent land certificates, misusing his judicial influence, and holding sessions of court improperly. Because he refused a Confederate appointment during the U.S. Civil War, he was able to retake his seat after the fall of the Confederacy.--Adapted from en.wikipedia.org.

Book The Constitution in Congress

Download or read book The Constitution in Congress written by David P. Currie and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2013-12-04 with total page 369 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Constitution in Congress series has been called nothing less than a biography of the US Constitution for its in-depth examination of the role that the legislative and executive branches have played in the development of constitutional interpretation. This third volume in the series, the early installments of which dealt with the Federalist and Jeffersonian eras, continues this examination with the Jacksonian revolution of 1829 and subsequent efforts by Democrats to dismantle Henry Clay’s celebrated “American System” of nationalist economics. David P. Currie covers the political events of the period leading up to the start of the Civil War, showing how the slavery question, although seldom overtly discussed in the debates included in this volume, underlies the Southern insistence on strict interpretation of federal powers. Like its predecessors, The Constitution in Congress: Democrats and Whigs will be an invaluable reference for legal scholars and constitutional historians alike.

Book A Political History of the Texas Republic 1836 1845

Download or read book A Political History of the Texas Republic 1836 1845 written by Stanley Siegel and published by University of Texas Press. This book was released on 2010-01-01 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is unique among the histories of the Texas Republic: it is the first to examine the fledgling nation from the point of view of its dynamic political life. Policies with far-reaching results were formulated in the nine years of Texas' independence, and the author clearly presents the many thorny issues that were to plague Texas for generations. The political history of the Republic is one of strong figures vying with each other for popular support of their divergent policies. The author details the personal feuds and animosities that resulted and shows the effects of these differences on the governing of the nation. Thoughtful use of diaries, memoirs, and other contemporary sources gives the reader an excellent understanding of the sense of personal concern the citizens of the Republic felt toward the political issues of the day.
