Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Care and Training of Children Knowing the individual child, the parent will be prepared, as no one else can be, to cope with any condition which may arise in its training. Further than this, the knowl edge so acquired will prove helpful in situa tions in which a stranger must be called in for help. In all matters pertaining to child study and child life, broad general principles can be laid down, but there must be, in addi tion to this, study of personality in order to carry principles out in detail. A careful reading of the several chapters of this book will readily Show that, even a conscientious carrying out of the principles suggested in securing right conduct in children, will often result in failure unless the particular needs of the individual child are studied and met. Book Infancy and Childhood

Download or read book Infancy and Childhood written by Walter Reeve Ramsey and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-22 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Infancy and Childhood: A Popular Book on the Care of Children In the writing of this book I have had constantly in mind the now recognized fact that, in order to accomplish anything in the way of preventive medi cine, there must be an intelligent cooperation of the public. Whatever progress is made in child-welfare will be largely along educational lines. The future well-being of the average child which is normal at birth depends to a great extent upon the physical and moral care it receives. For the first years, which in many respects are the most important in the life of the individual, this care devolves largely upon the mother and nurse. The old-time mysticism, which still to some ex tent surrounds medicine, must disappear and the public be taught what it may rightfully expect of itself and the physician. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Better Babies: A Guide to the Practical Care of the Mother and Young Child I feel it is due my readers to explain why I have written better babies. Of course, my basic reason for so doing is my ever-pres ent desire to see a world filled only with bet ter babies, and toward that end I have worked for years, devoting myself almost exclusively to the treatment of infants and young children. I felt that the medical profession would never fully perform any real service for humanity until the diseases of children were given the universal care, attention, and interest which they merit. Book The Care of the Child in Health Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Care of the Child in Health Classic Reprint written by Nathan Oppenheim and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-09-15 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Care of the Child in Health The person of high mind and character, selects an admirable field of work, or such a field as is susceptible of being dignified by the exercise of thorough work and preparation, of thought ful attention to details, of a large grasp of the inherent potentialities 'of the vocation, which marks it off from the sordid and petty affairs of ordinary, petty life. Great results are not obtained by a preternatural flash of wondrous inspiration. On the contrary, they rest upon unremitting toil, upon tireless industry, upon an endless struggle with adverse conditions, the conquering of which means a great step toward the final evolution of civilization. This is the basis of genius, and a careful examination of the works of any great man will Show how scrupulously he has met the demands Of the Situation. Leonardo da Vinci was will ing to grind his own colors, and make his own paints in order to obtain the desired effects; and in the wide range of activities in which he was proficient there was no detail too small or too burdensome to be carefully mastered. William Morris, who was great in both poetry and art, in order to produce works of beauty became a printer, a dyer, a weaver. There was no labor too commonplace, no outlay of time. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Notes on the Care of Babies and Young Children: For the Use of Teachers At no time has the attention of the people been directed to questions of Hygiene and Sanitation more closely than at present. The knowledge of simple truths and of simple facts, which a generation ago were the property of a few, is now in the possession of a great number, and it is fully realised that, in order that this valuable information should be still more widely diffused, the subject of Hygiene must, in some form or other, be introduced amongst the pupils of the Elementary Schools. The little book which Miss Tucker has written will furnish teachers with one more means of imparting to their pupils information which will be interesting to them, and of great use in after life. Book Observations Upon the Natural History of Epidemic Diarrhoea

Download or read book Observations Upon the Natural History of Epidemic Diarrhoea written by O. H. Peters and published by CUP Archive. This book was released on 2018-02-06 with total page 206 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Observations Upon the Natural History of Epidemic Diarrhoea The causative agencies from which springs the plentiful harvest of child mortality in large cities may be conceived as a felted mass of rootlets almost inextricably intertwined. Those of poverty, bad housing, bad feeding, and neglect, may be severally recognized, but the extent of their interrelations with actual respiratory and alimentary disease - those to which the greater part of the mortality is referred - can be traced only with difficulty. It is the object Of this work to aid ln the labour of cutting away the matrix and entangling fibres and to lay bare the hidden ramifications of at least one important causative agency - epidemic diarrhoea. This affection - if we accept provisionally the more novel and generally favoured conception. As to its nature - is revealed as something very like an ordinary infectious disease, and one which permeates all classes, while the excessive mortality it gathers round itself in urban centres must be regarded as something superadded, owing to the vicious circle it forms with those baneful conditions of slum life mentioned above. On the other hand, its peculiarly intimate association with the circum stances of domestic life, from the continual faecal pollution of the interior of the household by infants and others, tends to make it more so than other affections of the kind peculiarly a class disease, and an especial scourge of dirty neighbourhoods. Dirty towns may however be saved from excessive mortality by a high percentage of breast feeding. A notable point in the interesting comparison that can be drawn between diarrhoea and typhoid fever is that, in accordance with their peculiarly opposite age-incidence curves, the marked and habitual depositing of infectious excreta within the household in the former disease may make the question of water-closet versus conservancy pan a matter of far less importance than in the latter.
