Book Indy Cars 1911 1939

Download or read book Indy Cars 1911 1939 written by Karl Ludvigsen and published by Enthusiast Books. This book was released on 2005-11-13 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When a group of Indianapolis businessmen built a 2 1/2-mile track and decided to stage a 500-mile race in 1911 it was an epic undertaking with a huge purse for the times that drew racers from Europe as well as America. Delage, Peugeot, Ballot and Mercedes cars came to win dollars and inspire America's racing-car builders, Harry Miller and the Duesenberg brothers. Soon these native talents came to dominate the 500-mile race, introducing supercharging and front-wheel drive with great success in the 1920s and 16-cylinder engines in the 1930s. This new book in the Ludvigsen Library Series covers racers through the 1930s, completing the Series' sweeping panorama of the cars that raced in the ''500'' from 1911 to the end of the 1970s. Many rare photos from the earliest days of Indy bring the cars, engines and personalities of these pioneering years to life. The drama of their achievements made the Indianapolis 500 the world's greatest auto race.

Book Italian Armoured Reconnaissance Cars 1911 45

Download or read book Italian Armoured Reconnaissance Cars 1911 45 written by Filippo Cappellano and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2018-07-26 with total page 49 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first Italian armoured cars were used in the war in Libya in 1911-12 against the Ottoman Empire. With few tanks being developed, the Italians relied instead on the development of more mobile armoured cars like the Ansaldo Lancia 1 Z, during World War I, but post-war the army, focusing on the Alpine battlegrounds of Italy's northern borders, did not consider armoured cars suitable for reconnaissance duties. The experience of the Spanish Civil War would provide the much needed last push for the Italians to develop modern armoured cars. The result were the famous AB 41-43 models, which fought against the British in North Africa and Marshall Tito's forces in Yugoslavia, along with other vehicles such as the AS 36 light armoured car. Using detailed colour plates and contemporary photographs, this book examines the development of the Italian armoured car in the two world wars and the inter-war years, from the deserts of North Africa to the slopes of the Alps.

Founded by Amzi Barber and John Walker, the company originally made steam cars under license from Stanley Steamer. The car was advertised as a combination auto and locomotive or, a ¿Locomobile¿. Based in Bridgeport, Conn., Locomobile gained a reputation for quality and performance, but only after switching to gas engines in 1902. A Locomobile won the prestigious Vanderbuilt Cup Race in 1908, and in 1909-10 Mrs. Harriet Clark Fisher took a Loco around the world, a journey recounted in this text. Locomobile was sold in 1922 to Durant, who continued producing the line until 1929. Originally created by the Locomobile Company in 1911, this wonderful book contains dozens of photos and diagrams, as well as illustrative text, about one of America¿s great cars. Although slightly reformatted, care has been taken to preserve the integrity of the text.

Book excerpt: The Chevrolet car and truck business traces its roots back to Michigans lumber industry in the middle of the 19th century. Lumber mills gave way to carriage and wagon manufacturing and the claim, before motorcars burst on the scene, that Flint was the vehicle capital of the world. This is the story of how those wagon makers quickly converted to producing automobiles, overtaking automotive pioneer and archrival Ford in sales, and building the Chevrolet brand into the global powerhouse entity it is today. This volume traces the first half (19111960) of Chevrolets 100-year history in photographic detail and provides an unparalleled spotter guide for long-forgotten (or never-known) Chevrolet cars and trucks.
