Download or read book The Captivity and the Pastoral Epistles written by James Strachan and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-17 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Captivity and the Pastoral Epistles: With Introduction and Notes With many differences of detail there is a marked similarity of style in the four Epistles of the Roman Imprisonment. They are less fiery and impetuous than those of the earlier groups. They breathe a more tranquil spirit. Their logic is not so remorseless. They are more tender and meditative. They are pervaded by a more cheerful optimism, a more serene and joyful confidence. If the epistles of the first and second groups re semble the flush of dawn and the fervour of midday, those of the third group suggest the mellow loveliness of afternoon, and those of the fourth the peace of evening. The change in style reflects the change in the writer's outward conditions. Paul the restless traveller and missionary is forced at last to sit still. For four or five years he seems to be doomed to a life of tedious inaction. And Paul the prisoner already begins to feel that he is Paul the aged. But how wise was the providence which gave the man of enterprise a season of quiet reflection! There were two long pauses in Paul's strenuous life as a Christian, the one at the beginning, the other at the end of his career, and the world owes more than it knows to the Arabian desert and the Roman prison. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First and Second Timothy and Titus have for many years borne the collective title The Pastoral Epistles." Both their style and their content make it difficult to locate them within the corpus of Pauline letters, and recent scholarship most often considers them pseudonymous, works that imitate Paul's letters but apply the apostle's teaching to the concerns of a later time, two or more decades after Paul's death. The Pastorals differ from Paul's own letters in being addressed to single individuals, coworkers of Paul who have been placed in charge of particular churches 'Timothy apparently in Ephesus, Titus in Crete. They provide instruction for community leaders, both the individual addressees and other leaders whom they will appoint. The specification of certain offices within the local churches is one of the features that appear to locate these works in a later phase of church development. In this commentary Benjamin Fiore, SJ, places the Pastorals in their historical and literary context. The reader will find here a solid introduction to parallel literary forms in Latin and Greek literature and particular descriptions of the way in which these documents use ancient rhetorical forms to achieve their paraenetic and hortatory purpose. Drawing on his parish experience as well as his academic training, Fiore also provides reflections on the contemporary pastoral application of these books, giving readers a renewed appreciation for the "pastoral" label these epistles bear. Benjamin Fiore, SJ, is president and professor of religious studies at Campion College at the University of Regina (Canada). "

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the church tradition three letters, now known as the Pastoral Epistles, are attributed to the apostle Paul. They are unlike any other letters by Paul. They are written to two of his closest companions, Timothy and Titus, and they instruct those two leaders how to lead gathered Christians in Ephesus and in Crete. The letters contain plenty of instruction for how church leaders at that time, and in those places, were to function. In this commentary, Scot McKnight seeks to explain the major themes of the Pastoral Epistles - church order, false teaching, and failing Christians - and their foundational vision for how Christians could make a good impression in public life. These three brief letters express a view of how Christians were to live in the Roman empire in a way that does not offend public sensibilities. They prescribe a way of public behavior best translated as 'civilized religion.'

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Leading New Testament scholar Stanley Porter offers a comprehensive commentary on the Pastoral Epistles that features rigorous biblical scholarship and emphasizes Greek language and linguistics. This book breaks new ground in its interpretation of these controversial letters by focusing on the Greek text and utilizing a linguistically informed exegetical method that draws on various elements in contemporary language study. Porter pays attention to the overall argument of the Pastoral Epistles while also analyzing word meanings and grammatical structures to tease out the textual meaning. Porter addresses major exegetical issues that arise in numerous highly disputed passages and--while attentive to the history of scholarship on First Timothy, Second Timothy, and Titus--often takes untraditional or innovative positions to blaze a new path forward rather than adopt settled answers. This commentary will appeal to professors, students, and scholars of the New Testament.
