It follows the first migrating Asians who skiffed down the coast, and explores the First Nations villages their ancestors founded. The robust cast of characters includes Sisters Islands light keepers and depression-era fishermen who beach-combed lumber for their island fishing shacks. Book Once There Were Dreams

Download or read book Once There Were Dreams written by Art Dickerson and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 249 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'In 1860 Indianola was the second largest seaport in Texas, serving Army forts through the Southwest. A planned railroad would connect the port to California, bringing dreams of growing commerce and wealth. The Civil War put these dreams on hold. The Navy blockaded the port. Commerce died. Supplies for the railroad were destroyed to prevent their use by Union forces in an invasion of Texas. When the invasion came, the town was bombarded and occupied. The dreams slept, carefully tended. In the aftermath of war, shipping returned. Work began on the railroad. Hope soared. The population doubled. In 1875 a hurricane destroyed over half the town by fire and flood. The population swallowed their dreams and moved inland. These events were seen through the eyes of three Confederate officers and their wives. They and all but one character of this book were real people living real events. All that remains of Indianola today is a concrete corner of the courthouse destroyed in the hurricane and a small cemetery overgrown with weeds marking a place where "Once there were dreams."'--[P. 4] of cover.

  • Pages : 630 pages

Download or read book Hunter of Dreams written by Steven Duff and published by Trafford Publishing. This book was released on 2002 with total page 630 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hunter of Dreams is the story of the so-called Underground Railroad, the escape route to Canada of American slaves in the 1850s and early '60s. The driving force behind Canadian involvement was Dr. Alexander Milton Ross of Belleville, Ontario, an extraordinary character, but one relatively unknown except to historians specializing in his era. Alexander Ross travelled in the Deep South, using his background in ornithology as a pretense at doing research. In reality, he was alerting slaves to the existence of the Underground Railroad and in the process, faced a number of dangerous situations. As well, he was involved on the fringes of John Brown's famous raid on Harpers Ferry. His work brought him to the attention of Abraham Lincoln, who commissioned him as a special agent to monitor the Confederate activities in Canada during the Civil War. Ross's work, declared Lincoln, shortened the Civil War by the better part of a year. Hunter of Dreamsreveals the story of the relatively unknown Alexander Ross, based on his own memoirs and contemporary magazine and newspaper articles; it is cast as a novel, told through James Ramsay, an imaginary friend of Dr. Ross's.
