Book excerpt: On March 21, 1578, Holy Thursday, cavalier Fabrizio Bracciolini charged that he had been ambushed, slashed, stoned, and left bleeding in a Pistoia street by fellow cavalier Mariotto Cellesi and four accomplices. In The Captain's Concubine: Love, Honor, and Violence in Renaissance Tuscany, Donald Weinstein studies the lengthy investigation of the incident, bares the motives of the actors, and follows the ensuing trial. Weinstein examines the roles of the patricians, merchants, shopkeepers, weavers, priests, and prostitutes who served as audience, bit players, and chorus in this Renaissance street-theater drama. When Fabrizio is revealed to be the lover of Chiara, the concubine of Mariotto's father, questioning moves away from the street fight itself to the right of the defendants to take revenge for violated family honor: accuser becomes accused, and a simple case of assault turns into a community's discussion of its most tenacious values. Lurching from comedy to tragedy and neglected even by local chroniclers, the Holy Thursday incident involved issues of honor, family, religion, gender relations, and power familiar to social historians of late medieval and early modern Europe. For the Medici ruler of the Grand Duchy of Tuscany, the Holy Thursday affair presented a dilemma: bound to regard duels and street fights as threats to an all too fragile public order and a challenge to his sovereignty, Francesco I nevertheless respected and fostered the aristocratic code of honor, family loyalty, and chivalric valor to which the Cellesi appealed. How these contradictions were accommodated is a crucial part of the story Weinstein tells.

Book excerpt: Rebel groups exhibit significant variation in their treatment of civilians, with profound humanitarian consequences. This dissertation proposes a new theory of rebel behavior and cohesion based on the internal dynamics of rebel groups. Rebel leaders have incentives to provide security, but are often unable to prevent group members from abusing civilians. Leaders exert effective control over their troops when they can offer cash payments and credible future rewards to their top commanders. Leaders who cannot offer these incentives allow their forces to loot locals in exchange for a minimal level of loyalty. The leader's ability to offer incentives that allow local security to prevail depends on partnerships with external actors such as diaspora communities and foreign governments. When these patrons have a stake in the group's success, they are motivated to supply financial resources to qualified, trusted leaders. Other patrons have goals that conflict with those of the rebel client. These patrons exert leverage over the rebels by supporting low quality leaders and withholding resources that could strengthen leader control, resulting in more abusive, faction-prone groups. The type of partnership available depends on factors beyond the group's control. The dissertation formalizes this theory and tests the implications in various ways, using an original cross-national dataset of rebel groups, 1980-2003, as well as a micro-level dataset of crop area during Liberia's war, derived through remote sensing. The dissertation also traces the model's logic through a detailed analysis of Liberia's rebel groups, based on fourteen months of fieldwork and interviews with nearly all surviving rebel leaders and top commanders who participated in Liberia's war, 1989-2003.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Concubines and Courtesans contains sixteen essays that consider, from a variety of viewpoints, enslaved and freed women across medieval and pre-modern Islamic social history. The essays bring together arguments regarding slavery, gender, social networking, cultural production (songs, poetry and instrumental music), sexuality, Islamic family law, and religion in the shaping of Near Eastern and Islamic society over time. They range over nearly 1000 years of Islamic history - from the early, formative period (seventh to tenth century C.E.) to the late Ottoman, Safavid and Mughal eras (sixteenth to eighteenth century C.E.) - and regions from al-Andalus (Islamic Spain) to Central Asia (Timurid Iran). The close, common thread joining the essays is an effort to account for the lives, careers and representations of female slaves and freed women participating in, and contributing to, elite urban society of the Islamic realm. Interest in a gendered approach to Islamic history, society and religion has by now deep roots in Middle Eastern and Islamic studies. The shared aim of the essays collected here is to get at the wealth of these topics, and to underscore their centrality to a firm grasp on Islamic and Middle Eastern history.

Book Protest Politics and the Democratization of South Korea

Download or read book Protest Politics and the Democratization of South Korea written by Youngtae Shin and published by Lexington Books. This book was released on 2014-11-20 with total page 191 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is about protest politics and social movements led by a group of women, the “Mothers,” who were inadvertently drawn into South Korea’s democratization movement from the 1970s to the 2000s. The Mothers were female family members of political dissidents of varying backgrounds and ages—college students, political and religious leaders, writers, and factory workers. Women who initially had very little in common developed a bond as the days of their families’ detentions accumulated and their ordeals continued. This led them to form a quasi-organization prayer meeting group in the 1970s, which eventually developed into permanent Mothers’ organizations in the mid-1980s. The Mothers in this book include both the early- and late-comers to the movement, as the membership has undergone many changes since its inception in the 1970s. While the individual Mothers are the primary focus, this book explores beyond their individual concerns and activities. It discusses various methods the individual Mothers employed to promote their causes and attempts to study how the activities of the organizations founded by the inexperienced Mothers have affected the process of Korea’s democratization and how they remain active decades later.
