Book The Old Testament Canon of the New Testament Church

Download or read book The Old Testament Canon of the New Testament Church written by Roger T. Beckwith and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2008-11-01 with total page 545 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This new study of the Old Testament canon by Roger Beckwith is on a scale to match H. E. Ryle's classic work, which was first published in 1892. But Beckwith has the advantage of writing after the Qumran (and other) discoveries; and he has also made full use of all the available sources, including biblical manuscripts and rabbinical and patristic literature, taking into account the seldom studied Syriac material as well as the Greek and Latin material. The result of many years of study, this book is a major work of scholarship on a subject which has been neglected in recent times. It is both historical and theological, but Beckwith's first consideration has been to make a thorough and unprejudiced historical investigation. One of his most important concerns - and one that is crucial for all students of Judaism, and Christians in particular - is to decide when the limits of the Jewish canon were settled. In the answer to this question lies an important key to the teaching of Jesus and his apostles, and the resultant beliefs of the New Testament church. Furthermore, any answers to questions about the state of the canon in the New Testament period would help to open a way through the present ecumenical (and interfaith) impasse on the subject. With its meticulous research and evenhanded approach, this book is sure to become the starting point for study of the Old Testament canon in the years to come.

Book The Canon of the Old and New Testaments Ascertained

Download or read book The Canon of the Old and New Testaments Ascertained written by Archibald Alexander and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-06 with total page 366 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Canon of the Old and New Testaments Ascertained: Or the Bible, Complete, Without the Apocrypha and Unwritten Traditions In this edition, the work has been carefully revised by the author, and many additions made to the testimonies adduced in the former editions; and also several important documents not contained in the former editions have been placed in the appendix. Some alterations have also been made in particular passages, but not of sufficient importance to require specification. In the London edition of this work by the Rev. Doctor Morison, some complaint was made of the want of references sufficiently distinct, to the authors from which the testimonies have been taken. In most cases, the works from which they have been derived are mentioned; and in a popular treatise of this kind, which has more the character of a compilation than of a work of original research, it is not deemed important to burden the margin with many notes of reference; which indeed are seldom used when most abundant. And whence, humanly speak ing, in numerous cases, this distortion of what is noble, and right, and useful, but from the deficiencies just noted in their early education - taught, probably, with anxious solicitude, the doctrines of revelation, but with an obliviousness of the op position, both from within and from without, with which these holy things would one day assuredly be assailed - care fully, perhaps, trained in the obligations of Christianity, but utterly uninstructed in the grounds of those obligations; with scarce any other reason for being a Christian, than for being a Mahometan, an Infidel, or a Jew. Book A General Survey of the History of the Canon of the New Testament 1881 Classic Reprint

This book was released on 2016-06-16 with total page 674 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A General Survey of the History, of the Canon, of the New Testament, 1881 My object in the present Essay has been to deal with the New Testament as a whole, and that on purely historical grounds. The separate books of which it is composed are considered not individually, but as claiming to be parts of the Apostolic heritage of Christians. And thus reserving for another occasion the inquiry into their mutual relations and essential unity, I have endeavoured to connect the history of the New Testament Canon with the growth and consolidation of the Catholic Church, and to point out the relation existing between the amount of evidence for the authenticity of its component parts, and the whole mass of Christian literature. However imperfectly this design has been carried out, I cannot but hope that such a method of inquiry will convey both the truest motion of the connexion of the written Word with the living body of Christ, and the surest conviction of its divine authority. Hitherto the co-existence of several types of Apostolic doctrine in the first age and of various parties in Christendom for several generations afterwards has been quoted to prove that our Bible as well as our Faith is a mere compromise. Book The Canon of the New Testament

Download or read book The Canon of the New Testament written by Bruce M. Metzger and published by Clarendon Press. This book was released on 1997-03-06 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides information from Church history concerning the recognition of the canonical status of the several books of the New Testament. Canonization was a long and gradual process of sifting among scores of gospels, epistles, and other books that enjoyed local and temporary authority - some of which have only recently come to light among the discoveries of Nag Hammadi. After discussing the external pressures that led to the fixing of the limits of the canon, the author gives sustained attention to Patristic evidence that bears on the development of the canon not only in the West but also among the Eastern Churches, including the Syrian, Armenian, Georgian, Coptic, and Ethiopian. Besides considering differences as to the sequence of the books in the New Testament, Dr Metzger takes up such questions as which form of text is to be regarded as canonical; whether the canon is open or closed; to what extent a canon should be sought within the canon; and whether the canon is a collection of authoritative books or an authoritative collection of books.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Canon and d104 of the Old Testament The Author of the following work, after studying in his native city of Copenhagen and also at Leipzig, was appointed ordinary Professor of Theology and Oriental Languages in the University of Copenhagen, and was transferred in 1890, on the death of Dr. Franz Delitzsch, to occupy the place of that distinguished scholar in Leipzig. The Treatise now presented in an English dress is described by its Author as to some extent an enlarged translation of a Danish work. Den gammeltcstamcntlige Skriftoverleveringy which had appeared in 1885. In its original form it aimed at imparting information as to the ascertained results of modern researches with reference to the Canon and d104 of the Old Testament. As expanded and recast in the German edition, the Author expresses the hope that it may prove useful to theological students. For the English edition Professor Buhl has supplied some additional references to the most recent literature, and at his request the Translator has called attention to a few of the most important contributions of British scholars which bear directly upon the subject of this work. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Canon of the Bible: Its Formation, History, and Fluctuations The substance of the present work was written towards the close of the year 1875 for the new edition of the "Encyclopaedia Britannica." Having been abridged and mutilated, contrary to the author's wishes, before its publication there, he resolved to print it entire. With that view it has undergone repeated revision with enlargement in different parts, and been made as complete as the limits of an essay appeared to allow. As nothing of importance has been knowingly omitted, the writer hopes it will be found a comprehensive summary of all that concerns the formation and history of the Bible canon. Book The History of the New Testament Canon in the Syrian Church Classic Reprint

Download or read book The History of the New Testament Canon in the Syrian Church Classic Reprint written by Julius A. Bewer and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-10 with total page 84 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of the New Testament Canon in the Syrian Church The study of the relation of the various documents which form the material of the dissertation has something fascinating, when the religious impulses are seen at work. The Syrians were no great literary people, but they were aglow for Christ. The throbbing of their passionate love for the Savior, which distinguishes them later on, may be felt here already in the various attempts which they made to translate his gospel into their own language. This recompenses us in a certain sense for the scanty information which we have of the beginning of Christianity in Syria. Three translations of the gospels, made at pretty nearly the same time, evidence the strength of the Christian life at the very beginning. It is important that this religious element be not overlooked. I count myself happy that my teacher, Professor Gottheil, has allowed me to take this subject for my dissertation, and that he has always directed my attention to matters of special interest for a theological student. It is due to this that I could combine my theological with my oriental studies. I want to thank him most heartily for his teaching and the kind interest he has always taken in my work. I am impelled also to thank my teacher, Professor McGiffert. To him I owe my training in historical criticism; he suggested the theme to me, and in his seminar the thesis was first read. His kind interest has never been wanting. This dissertation was finished in the spring of last year; therefore the newer publications could not be consulted. They would, however, have modified none of the results. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
