Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Canadian War of 1812 This book, intended to be an instalment of Canadian history, has been compiled as far as possible simply from the dispatches on both sides relating to the war. Nearly all of them will be found printed in one or other of the following books - The Annual Register; the Appendices to James's Naval and Military Occurrences of the war; Brannan's Oficial Letters of tne Military and Naval Oflicers of t/ze United States during the Wars wit/z Great Britain in tne Years 1812 to 1815, Washington City, 1823; and the Documentary History of the Campaigns upon tne Niagara Frontier, collected and edited for the Lundy's Lane His torical Society, by lieut.-col. E. Cruikshank, to whom students of the war owe a debt of gratitude. The different printed versions of the dispatches in these books do not always quite tally with each other. Among other Canadian books I have consulted Mr. Brymner's Reports on Canadian Archives; the second volume of Christie's History of tbe late Province of Lower Canada, 1849; Professor Hannay's History of tne War of 1812 and the eighth volume of Kingsford's History of Canada. Six out of the eight maps which accompany the letterpress are cotemporary American maps, which the Delegates of the Clarendon Press have been good enough to reproduce. They are from a little volume in the Colonial Office Library, entitled Military and Topograpnical Atlas of Me United States including tne Britisli Possessions and Florida, &c., by John M elish, Philadelphia, 1813. I wish to express my warm acknow ledgments to Mr. C. Atchley, Librarian of the Colonial Office, for constant and kindly help given to me in this as in other books. Book 1812 The War and Its Moral

Download or read book 1812 The War and Its Moral written by William F. Coffin and published by . This book was released on 2015-09-27 with total page 302 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from 1812; The War, and Its Moral: A Canadian Chronicle My Dear Sir, - I venture to appeal to your respected name as the best introduction for the little work which I do myself the honour to dedicate to you. To you, indeed, it owes its existence. You conferred upon me the appointment I have the honour to hold under the Crown in Canada, and that appointment has given life to an idea, long cherished in embryo. The management of the Ordnance Lands in this Province has thrown me upon the scenes of the most notable events of the late war. It has brought me in contact with many of the surviving actors. It has revived early recollections of my own. The achievements of 1812 were the household words of my childish days. For three years, I grew up among the men, and almost among the incidents of the time. In the Spring of 1815, from the Grand Battery at Quebec, I had watched the slow cavalcade which bore Sir George Prevost across the ice of the St. Lawrence, on bis return to England. Fifteen years afterwards brought me back to a country which, for thirty-three years, has been my home. During this long interval, the subject of the war has never ceased to be one of great interest. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Richardson's War of 1812: With Notes and a Life of the Author On the Canadian Side of the Niagara river, just where its foaming and turbulent waters issue from the narrow, rocky gorge, stands the straggling village of Queenston. The place at the present time is of very little importance except as a terminal port for a magnificent fleet of pleasure vessels that carry tourists and excursion parties to visit the Falls, five or six miles farther up the river. But as the scene of one of the proudest victories of Canadian and British arms during the War of 1812 Queenston has won a fame that is world-wide. The settlement proper of the country dates from the close of the Revolutionary war, when the disbanded soldiers of Butler's Rangers and other United Empire Loyalists took up grants of land on the banks of the river. At the mouth of the river there soon grew up the town of Niagara (newark), opposite Fort Niagara, at that time and until 1796 in the hands Of the British. The great highway of the trade with Detroit and other western settlements was the Niagara, and as this trade increased the laden vessels from the lakes were taken as far up the river as possible, to shorten the portage around the Falls. This head of navigation was called at first the New Landing, and later Queenstown. Thus favorably Situated for trade, the new town prospered and soon became the home of several pioneer merchants, who never dreamed that the stream of commerce could possibly find any other course. Download or read book A History of the War of 1812 15 written by Rossiter Johnson and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-03 with total page 386 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of the War of 1812-15: Between the United States and Great Britain The offender, says an Italian proverb, never forgives; and it is a singular fact that the deepest resentments and the most implacable hatreds are not those arising from a sense of injuries received, but from injuries inflicted. The victim of a deliberate wrong seldom treasures up a purpose of revenge, or demands anything more than a restoration of his rights; but the oppressor always hates those who have escaped from his oppression. That wise old philosopher, Ben Franklin, who died within seven years after the acknowledgment of our country as a separate nation in 1783, foresaw, even then, what did not take place till more than twenty years after his death. He declared that the war which had just closed in the surrender of Cornwallis was only the war of Revolution, and that the war of Independence was yet to be fought. Book History of the War of 1812 Betwen Great Britain and the United States of America Classic Reprint

This book was released on 2018-02-27 with total page 388 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of the War of 1812 Betwen Great Britain and the United States of America This book has been written for the purpose Of placing before the people of Canada, in a single volume, the story Of the defence Of our country from foreign invasion during the last war between Great Britain and the United States of America. As this defence could not have been successful but for the hearty cooperation of our ancestors, the people of Canada of that day, this war ought to be regarded as Canada's first and greatest contribution to the work of em pire building, for the fervent loyalty, which a few years ago, sent so many of the sons of Canada to fight the battles of Great Britain in South Africa, received its first illustration on the battlefields of the War of 1812. I have not thought it necessary to burden the pages of this book with foot notes and references to authorities, because the Official sources of our knowledge of the war are so few in number as to render such references unnecessary. For the movements of the armies, the numbers of the British troops engaged, and the losses of the latter, I have relied on the British official despatches. For the numbers Of the American armies and their losses, I have accepted the Ameri can Official despatches, except where they were manifestly in error. Book Pierre Berton s War of 1812

Download or read book Pierre Berton s War of 1812 written by Pierre Berton and published by Anchor Canada. This book was released on 2011-11-01 with total page 962 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To commemorate the bi-centenary of the War of 1812, Anchor Canada brings together Pierre Berton's two groundbreaking books on the subject. The Invasion of Canada is a remarkable account of the war's first year and the events that led up to it; Pierre Berton transforms history into an engrossing narrative that reads like a fast-paced novel. Drawing on personal memoirs and diaries as well as official dispatches, the author has been able to get inside the characters of the men who fought the war - the common soldiers as well as the generals, the bureaucrats and the profiteers, the traitors and the loyalists. The Canada-U.S. border was in flames as the War of 1812 continued. York's parliament buildings were on fire, Niagara-on-the-Lake burned to the ground and Buffalo lay in ashes. Even the American capital of Washington, far to the south, was put to the torch. The War of 1812 had become one of the nineteenth century's bloodiest struggles. Flames Across the Border is a compelling evocation of war at its most primeval - the muddy fields, the frozen forests and the ominous waters where men fought and died. Pierre Berton skilfully captures the courage, determination and terror of the universal soldier, giving new dimension and fresh perspective to this early conflict between the two emerging nations of North America.

Gage, the British commander, drafted a contin gent of French Canadians to aid in revenging on the Indians the massa cre of the garrison at Mackinaw, the levies were treated as beasts of burden, and set to work at the point of the bayonet, while the British regulars sat at ease in their tents. The legislative council or senate excluded all natives of Canada from a share in the conduct of its affairs. N 0 correct idea can be given within the narrow limits of a newspaper history of the vexatious injustice practiced upon the French population. They were at one time denied the right of sitting as jurors, and were in many respects a proscribed class. Small wonder that many French Canadians joined the ranks of the heroes of the American revolution in 1776.
