Excerpt from book: IMPRESSIONS OF CUBA. By G. F. Matthew. Having been recommended several years ago to try a sea voyage for the benefit of my health, I accepted the, invitation of some very kind friends to visit Cienfuegos, a town on the south side of Cuba. My voyage was made in the winter of 1866-67, and I remained two months and a half on the Island. The following pages contain a short description of such of the natural features of the country as still remain impressed on my memory, together with a few remarks upon its people, industries and vegetation. We sailed from New York on Christmas Day, and after being buffeted about by contrary winds for a fortnight, at length entered the trade-wind region and sped onward toward the West Indies. On entering this zone of N. E. Trades, the pale misty sky of the North Atlantic is at once exchanged for one of the clearest blue, and the ill defined horizon for one of the greatest distinctness; so that the voyager is no longer left in doubt as to the line where sky ends and sea begins. The azure ocean in these latitudes has a fascination for one accustomed to the dull green hues of our northern seas, while the floating gulf-weed with its miniature world of living forms, and the new kinds of fishes?reflecting from their sides in metallic tints the color of the waters in which they find a home?are sights upon which the eye dwells with ever increasing pleasure. With the charming weather which prevails on the southern coast of Cuba during the winter months, the voyager as he creeps along can thoroughly enjoy the ever-changing views presented bv that magnificent range of mountains?the Sierra Maestra. This range extends along the coast from near Cape Maysi, the eastern extremity of the Island, to Cape Cruz, .a distance of two hundred and fifty miles, ..

Book The Canadian Naturalist and Quarterly Journal of Science Vol 4

This book was released on 2015-07-17 with total page 492 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Canadian Naturalist and Quarterly Journal of Science, Vol. 4: With the Proceedings of the Natural History Society of Montreal The building of the Sheffield School is better than that of Columbia College, though it is an old medical school adapted to its present use; and the scope of the institution is wider, includ ing six distinct courses, any of which may be followed by the student. These are: lst, Chemistry and Mineralogy; 2nd, Eu gineering and Mechanics; 3rd, Mining and Metallurgy; 4th, Agriculture; 5th, Natural History and Geology; 6th, A Select Scientific and Literary Course. The class-rooms and laboratories struck me as remarkably ingenious and neat in all their arrange ments, and combining in a great degree all possible contriva-nces for the convenience of Professors and students. The bungling and uncomfortable arrangements too often seen in Academic rooms had evidently here been replaced by the exercise of some engineering and mechanical skill and contrivance, and by a com bination of lecture room and cabinet the means of illustration had been rendered extremely accessible. In token that the She ield School is not altogether a school of mines looking down into the bowels of the earth, its liberal founder has presented it with an Equatorial Telescope, made by Clark, with an object glass having an aperture of nine inches. It is placed in a tower constructed for it; and with a meridian circle and other instru ments, enables students to learn all the work of a regular observatory, as well as the operations of astronomical geodesy. Any one interested in the training of the young men of Canada can scarcely avoid a feeling of envy in visiting such an institution as this, furnished with so many facilities for enabling the active mind of youth to grasp all that is of practical utility or pro vocative of high and noble thought in the heaven above and in the earth beneath. At this moment a Canadian Sheffield, judiciously aiding any University having an adequate and per manent basis, would do more to promote the trade and manufac tures of this country, and its scientific reputation, than can be done by any other agency. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Canadian Naturalist and Quarterly Journal of Science, Vol. 10: With the Proceedings of the Natural History Society of Montreal This genus was established by Salter, in 1858, for a very curious shell found in Scotland, in the Durness Limestone, one of the lowest members of the Lower Silurian or possibly within the limits of the Upper Cambrian. Salter found in this limestone two species of the genus, but one was too imperfect for description. The typical species P. invagination he regarded as the shell of a cephalopod mollusk allied to Orthoceras, but of very simple structure, having the chamber and siphuncle united into one organ. His definition of the genus was in these words; "siphuncle and septa combined, as a series of conical concave septa which fit into each other sheathwise." In 1860, Billings described, in the Canadian Naturalist, a species from the Calciferous Formation of Belleisle, under the name Piloceras Canadense. The specimens showed that the part described by Salter was not the external shell, but only the siphuncle, and that the shell, when complete, must have included a chambered portion surrounding this enormous siphuncle, which thus corresponded to the great siphuncle of the Lower Silurian shells known as Andoceras. From the many subjects to which your attention and that of kindred Societies has been called in the past year, I may select the following as deserving our attention The present aspect of inquiries as to the introduction of genera and species in geo logical time.
