Book The Lithogeochemical and Mineral chemical Alteration Footprints of the Canadian Malartic Gold Deposit Qu bec

Download or read book The Lithogeochemical and Mineral chemical Alteration Footprints of the Canadian Malartic Gold Deposit Qu bec written by Nicolas Gaillard and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The world-class Canadian Malartic gold deposit, with current reserves of 5.56 Moz Au grading 1.10 g/t Au, and a geological resource of ~16.3 Moz Au (including past production), is the largest operating gold mine in Canada. The deposit is located in contact with, and directly south of the Cadillac-Larder Lake Fault Zone, which delineates the boundary between the Abitibi and Pontiac subprovinces. The Abitibi greenstone belt is the most prolific gold metallotect in the Superior Province of Canada, and has significant potential for future discoveries. However, exploration efforts for Canadian Malartic-type and similar gold deposits in metamorphic terranes are complicated by the overlap and/or overprint of deformation and metamorphism with respect to gold mineralization. In this study, I characterize the lithogeochemical and mineral-chemical signatures of the Canadian Malartic gold deposit, and extract parameters for mapping the distribution of alteration features that define the footprint of the mineralized system. This information is particularly useful in a mineral exploration context in that it provides tools for detecting and vectoring towards gold mineralization.Hydrothermal alteration at Canadian Malartic is zoned adjacent to the main hydrothermal fluid pathways. Proximal alteration in the main host metasedimentary rocks is dominated by fine-grained microcline±albite-quartz, accompanied by phlogopite, calcite±Fe-dolomite, pyrite and rutile. Distal alteration consists of biotite, microcline±albite, phengite, quartz, calcite, pyrite and rutile. Whole-rock lithogeochemistry was used to evaluate the metasomatic processes associated with gold mineralization. Molar element ratio analysis indicates a broad increase in alkali metasomatism (K and Na) from background, through distal to proximal alteration zones. Mass transfer calculations for altered rocks document systematic gains in CO2, S, K2O and LOI, as well as Au-Te-W-Ag±(As-Sb-Bi-Mo-Pb), that increase towards the ore zones. Pathfinder elements delineate broad enrichment patterns around the deposit, which reflect the regional distribution of fluid-rock interaction.Mica chemistry constitutes a sensitive indicator of hydrothermal and metamorphic processes, and was used to elucidate the physico-chemical conditions that prevailed during ore formation. A systematic increase in biotite Mg# was associated with high sulfidation (∑aS) and oxidation (fO2) conditions in altered metasedimentary rocks, and correlates positively with sulfur metasomatism adjacent to the fluid pathways. Hydrothermal alteration is also manifested in biotite and white mica by a Tschermak-controlled decrease in Al, coincident with increases in Si and Fe+Mg contents. By contrast, pseudosection modelling suggests that the regional trends documented for biotite and white mica along the metamorphic gradient (in unaltered metasedimentary rocks), including the progression of a Tschermak exchange towards more aluminous compositions, were the product of increasing P-T conditions southwards, rather than a distal effect of alteration. The textural, modal and mineral-chemical features of pyrite and pyrrhotite offer critical insights into ore-forming and metamorphic processes at Malartic. The distribution of hydrothermal pyrite delineates a ~10 kilometer-long semi-continuous alteration halo centered on the deposit, and oriented parallel to the regional foliation (S2). This envelope is also defined by elevated pyrite+pyrrhotite modal proportions, that decrease with distance from the deposit. The distribution of pyrite trace element compositions illustrates district-scale anomalies associated with the gold mineralization; the concentrations of Au and Te in pyrite reach maxima in the deposit and decrease away from the ore zones. High concentrations of Ti and Cr (as well as W) in pyrite analyses are attributed to rutile inclusions, and delineate a sulfidation-oxidation halo around the deposit"--

Book Geological Classification of Canadian Gold Deposits

Download or read book Geological Classification of Canadian Gold Deposits written by Knud Howard Poulsen and published by . This book was released on 2000 with total page 116 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This bulletin proposes a geological classification of lode gold deposits based largely on the nature of the ore and on the geological settings of the deposits. Sixteen common types of bedrock gold deposits are distinguished and their main geological attributes are summarized. These do not correspond to an equal number of genetic types; many of these deposit types represent different components of larger hydrothermal systems and are genetically related. Most of the deposit types identified are represented by at least one large example (containing over 100 tonnes of gold). Descriptions are provided of Canadian gold deposits, including Archean & Proterozoic deposits in the Canadian Shield, Late Proterozoic to Palaeozoic deposits in the Appalachian Orogen, and Mesozoic to Cenozoic deposits in the Cordilleran Orogen. The final section discusses the application of gold deposit models.

Book excerpt: "This report releases whole-rock geochemical and assay results of 889 analyses of 878 samples from Canadian Malartic mine, collected during the 2012 to 2015 field seasons as part of a post-doctoral study by the senior author at the Geological Survey of Canada, in Quebec City (GSC-Q). Research at the Canadian Malartic mine was conducted under the Lode Gold project, in collaboration with the Canadian Mining and Innovation Council, Osisko and Mine Canadian Malartic. Analytical data is presented in a format easily importable in a geographic information system (GIS). Samples were collected on surface, from the mine (open pit) and from drillcore to document host units, their petrogenesis, the alteration assemblages and the ore. Interpretations are presented in De Souza et al. (2015, 2017a, b, 2019, 2020), and in Dubé and Mercier-Langevin (2020) and Mercier-Langevin et al. (2020). Sample information and geochemical results are presented in Appendices 1 and 2 (worksheet "Results") respectively"--Summary, page 1.

Download or read book Archean Base and Precious Metal Deposits Southern Abitibi Greenstone Belt Canada written by Thomas Monecke and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page 291 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Abitibi greenstone belt of eastern Canada represents the world's largest Neoarchean terrane of supracrustal rocks. Straddling the border between the provinces of Ontario and Quebec, the belt covers an area that is approximately 700 km from southeast to northwest and 350 km from north to south. The belt is comprised of several major east-trending successions of folded volcanic and sedimentary rocks, with intervening intrusions. The supracrustal rocks of the Abitibi greenstone belt are uniquely well preserved and have mostly been overprinted only at a low metamorphic grade, allowing the study of primary geological relationships.

Book The Metallogeny of Lode Gold Deposits

Download or read book The Metallogeny of Lode Gold Deposits written by Ulrich Kretschmar and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2015-11-24 with total page 356 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Metallogeny of Lode Gold Deposits: A Syngenetic Perspective is a synthesis of lode gold vein forming processes, addressing the commonality in similar worldwide deposits. The book's empirical model incorporates widely known and accepted principles of ore deposition and shows how it applies in the volcanic-sedimentary greenstone belt environment. Several chapters detail outcrop maps and photos of field occurrences and textures. The interpretations flow directly from the authors' field work, and are coupled with analyses of underlying physical processes. Utilizing detailed geological mapping, field work, and chemical analyses as the basis of a syngenetic formation mode, the text arms readers with the tools necessary to accurately analyze and interpret new data on the subject. This includes information on decoding the significance of asymmetry in vein formation, as well as the role of lamprophyres in gold camps, how Archean geology requires integration into a lode vein formation model, and how to develop an understanding of the worldwide applicability of gold cycles to lode vein formation and exploration and how it can be applied to deposits of all ages. - Presents the first book to galvanize lode gold research into a single authoritative reference - Simplifies the complexity of lode gold's underlying processes and presents valid concepts surrounding the lode gold forming environment - Features color figures, illustrations, and photos that enrich the content's focus and aid in the retention of key concepts
