Book excerpt: In 2022, Canada announced its first Critical Minerals Strategy to extract minerals needed to meet Canada's net-zero emissions goal by 2050. Since announcing this strategy, Canada and the province of Ontario have faced criticism from Indigenous Nations and communities regarding the environmental consultation process for resource extraction projects on Indigenous peoples' lands. Many of the mines are located in remote areas, mainly impacting Indigenous peoples, who will disproportionately bear any environmental and social disruption. This study includes a literature review, a jurisdictional scan, and a multi-criteria analysis to determine how the consultation process can be amended. Three policy options are then proposed and analyzed, followed by the recommendation of a policy bundle: creating a social consultation process and modifying the current Impact Assessment Act.

Book Net Zero and Natural Resources Law

Download or read book Net Zero and Natural Resources Law written by and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2024-08-01 with total page 393 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: States, corporations, and other actors worldwide have committed to measures aimed at bringing down global emissions to net zero by the year 2060 or earlier. While the need for a clean energy transition is clear, incoherently designed transition programs can pose complex environmental, social, and governance risks, including legal liability and protracted disputes. At the same time, the rush for minerals needed to manufacture clean energy technologies raises fundamental questions–most crucially, how to ensure the exploration and development of energy transition minerals in a manner that does not exacerbate resource conflicts, resource nationalism, human rights violations, protectionism, energy insecurity, social exclusions, and inequity, especially in conflict-affected and high-risk regions. By studying the legal and regulatory systems of Africa, Asia, Europe, Australasia, and North and South America through the themes of sovereignty, security and solidarity, Net Zero and Natural Resources Law provides an in-depth discussion of tools and techniques for addressing the legal and contract risks relating to the clean energy transition. This book offers a comprehensive and authoritative account of the nature, scope, and guiding principles of natural resources law and policy in a net zero era. Consideration is given to the integrated resource governance roadmap that is needed to improve coherence and coordination in the design, financing, and implementation of energy transition programs across the entire natural resource value chain.

Book The Green Stone Age Exploration and Exploitation of Minerals for Green Technologies

Download or read book The Green Stone Age Exploration and Exploitation of Minerals for Green Technologies written by M. Smelror and published by Geological Society of London Special Publications. This book was released on 2023-06-21 with total page 346 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Raw materials have been essential in the development of all human societies through history and moving into a greener, more carbon-lean future we become increasingly reliant on access to a growing number of raw materials. Minerals for new technologies improving the quality of our lives and the environment are the building blocks of the new Green Stone Age. This Special Publication presents ongoing research and mapping programmes focusing on minerals needed for the transformation to greener societies. In addition to new exploration models and shared geological information on the different prospective currently mined areas, the notion of criticality in different countries is discussed and examples of ongoing national and cross-country research and mapping programmes are presented. In addition to the resource/reserve and technical-economic aspects, the social and environmental dimensions are also a focus in some of the contributions, as holistic approaches to the exploration and exploitation of critical minerals and materials are needed to fulfil the green transition and goals for the Green Stone Age.

Book Minerals Critical Minerals and the U S Economy

Download or read book Minerals Critical Minerals and the U S Economy written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2008-03-11 with total page 263 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Minerals are part of virtually every product we use. Common examples include copper used in electrical wiring and titanium used to make airplane frames and paint pigments. The Information Age has ushered in a number of new mineral uses in a number of products including cell phones (e.g., tantalum) and liquid crystal displays (e.g., indium). For some minerals, such as the platinum group metals used to make cataytic converters in cars, there is no substitute. If the supply of any given mineral were to become restricted, consumers and sectors of the U.S. economy could be significantly affected. Risks to minerals supplies can include a sudden increase in demand or the possibility that natural ores can be exhausted or become too difficult to extract. Minerals are more vulnerable to supply restrictions if they come from a limited number of mines, mining companies, or nations. Baseline information on minerals is currently collected at the federal level, but no established methodology has existed to identify potentially critical minerals. This book develops such a methodology and suggests an enhanced federal initiative to collect and analyze the additional data needed to support this type of tool.
