Download or read book Residential Water Demand written by Angelo P. Grima and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 1972-12-15 with total page 202 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This detailed study of the use of water at different price levels by residential consumers in the Toronto-centred region from Hamilton to Oshawa challenges the basis of our present urban water supply policy. Adoption of the recommendations presented would mean higher prices to householders, but a considerable saving of hundreds of millions of tax dollars over the next three decades. The present policy uses a 'requirement approach' in which future water needs are calculated by extrapolation of past trends and an assumption that demand is inelastic. This leads to excessive levels of water use and over-investment in water supply, sewage collection, and treatment systems. The resultant misallocation of resources can be corrected by adoption of a demand/management approach in which investment policy is guided by consumer demand and alternative pricing arrangements are used as a management tool. Dr. Grima examines several alternative choices for management, such as metering, increasing marginal prices, sewerage charges, seasonal charges, and an increasing price block schedule, and describes the results of each. Water managers in Canada are strongly challenged to begin a fundamental rethinking of their basic policies. (Department of Geography Research Publication 7)

Download or read book Land and Land Appraisal written by R.O. Whyte and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 379 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is designed to present those principles and techniques for land appraisal which are applicable to all developing countries. Examples of specific situations in which these techniques have been or might be adopted are taken primarily from monsoonal and equatorial Asia. It is in this region that the land/food/population problem is most acute. It is also the writer's region of specialization; over the past ten years out of a total of some twenty-five years working in or closely concerned with Asia, an attempt has been made to examine the major problems ofland potential in relation to rural economy and nutrition in the whole region, and in particular to show to what extent its different parts resemble or differ from each other. The geographical scope comprises mainland southern, southeast and east Asia, from Pakistan to the People's Republic of China and Korea, with the insular monsoonal and equatorial lands of Sri Lanka, Indonesia, East Malaysia, Philippines, Taiwan and Japan (part). International and bilateral agencies and specialists outside Asia repeatedly insist that Asia must learn to feed itself from the produce of its own land, or from imported foods paid for by the exports of primary and secondary commodities and of manufactured products to the developed world.
Download or read book The Jarrah Forest written by Bernard Dell and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 405 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Western Australian jarrah forest is unique, contammg some of the most beautiful flora in the world, more than 100 species of birds and some 50 mammals indigenous to this State. This book "The Jarrah Forest - A Complex Mediterranean Ecosystem" is a collection of scholarly essays on every known aspect of the northern part of the jarrah forest extending from south of Collie to the Avon River. All of the work has been researched by members of tertiary institutions, the private sector and government instrumentalities and was prepared expressly for this book. In the list of contributors are the names of many Western Australians who are in the forefront of their particular field. The book will be a very important reference work for senior secondary schools and tertiary institutions in Western Australia for many years to come. Additionally, it will have wide appeal to all interested in forestry management, both in Australia and overseas. I should like to express my appreciation for the efforts of all those involved in the conception and planning of this most valuable book. Perth, August 1988 Peter Dowding LL.B. M.L.A.
Download or read book The Impact of Climatic Variations on Agriculture written by M.L. Parry and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-27 with total page 848 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Three important studies were initiated in the 1970s to investigate the relation ship between climatic variations and agriculture: by the National Delcnse University (1980) on Crop Yields and Climate Change to the Year 2000, by the U.s. Department of Transportation (1975) on Impacts of Climatic Change on the Biosphere and by the U.S. Department of Energy (1980) on Environmental and Societal Consequences of a Possible CO -Induced Climatic Change (the ClAP 2 study). These were pioneering projects in a young field. Their emphasis was on measuring likely impacts of climatic variations rather than on evaluating possible responses, and they focused on first-order impacts (e.g., on crop yields) rather than on higher-order effects on society. A logical next step was to look at higher-order effects and potential responses, as part of a more integrated approach to impact assessment. This was undertaken by the World Climate Impact Program (WCIP), which is directed by the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP). The WCIP is one of four aspects of the World Climate Program that was initiated in 1979. At a meeting in 1982, the Scientific Advisory Committee of WCIP accepted, in broad terms, a proposal from the International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis (IIASA) for an integrated climate impact assessment, with the proviso that the emphasis be on impacts in the agricultural sector. Martin Parry was asked to design and direct the project at IIASA. Funding was provided by UNEP, IIASA, the Austrian Government and the United Nations University.
