Excerpt: ... he telegraphed a report of the same to the Secretary of the Navy, adding: "If ten thousand men were here city and fleet would be ours within forty-eight hours. Every consideration demands immediate army movement; if delayed, city will be defended more strongly by guns taken from the fleet." But the almost inextricable confusion at Tampa, and the receipt of a false report that two Spanish cruisers and a torpedo-boat destroyer had been seen in the Nicolas Channel, delayed the departure of the Fifth Corps for about two weeks. Finally, on June 14, the expedition, convoyed by the Indiana and several smaller ships, set sail for Santiago de Cuba. It is not the intention at this time to describe in detail the sailing and disembarkation of General Shafter's army; that is reserved for another chapter. But it may be remarked here that this army arrived at Santiago on June 20, and in conjunction with the navy was then ready to strike the blows which were to decide the fate of Cuba and end the war. The delay at Tampa was but the lull before the storm. comments No sooner had the naval authorities of Spain received positive information of Admiral Dewey's victory in the Philippines, than they felt the need of having a strong naval force in home waters. Accordingly, the despatch of May 12 authorizing Cervera's return was sent; and so anxious were they that this despatch should reach Cervera before he arrived in any Cuban or Porto Rican port that three days later the commandant at San Juan, Porto Rico, was directed to use every possible means to forward it to the admiral, who was then at Curacao. As Admiral Cervera did not receive the despatch until his return to Spain several months later, and as he did not even learn that such a despatch had been sent...

Book The War of 1898

    Book Details:
  • Author : Louis A. Pérez Jr.
  • Publisher : Univ of North Carolina Press

Download or read book The War of 1898 written by Louis A. Pérez Jr. and published by Univ of North Carolina Press. This book was released on 2000-11-09 with total page 190 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A century after the Cuban war for independence was fought, Louis Perez examines the meaning of the war of 1898 as represented in one hundred years of American historical writing. Offering both a critique of the conventional historiography and an alternate history of the war informed by Cuban sources, Perez explores the assumptions that have shaped our understanding of the "Spanish-American War--a construct, he argues, that denies the Cubans' participation in their own struggle for liberation from Spanish rule. Perez examines historical accounts of the destruction of the battleship Maine, the representation of public opinion as a precipitant of war, and the treatment of the military campaign in Cuba. Equally important, he shows how historical narratives have helped sustain notions of America's national purpose and policy, many of which were first articulated in 1898. Cuba insinuated itself into one of the most important chapters of U.S. history, and what happened on the island in the final decade of the nineteenth century--and the way in which what happened was subsequently represented--has had far-reaching implications, many of which continue to resonate today.

Book Under the Shadow of Napoleon

Download or read book Under the Shadow of Napoleon written by Michael Bonura and published by NYU Press. This book was released on 2012-05-07 with total page 321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The way an army thinks about and understands warfare has a tremendous impact on its organization, training, and operations. The central ideas of that understanding form a nation's way of warfare that influences decisions on and off the battlefield. From the disasters of the War of 1812, Winfield Scott ensured that America adopted a series of ideas formed in the crucible of the Wars of the French Revolution and epitomized by Napoleon. Reflecting American cultural changes, these French ideas dominated American warfare on the battlefields of the Mexican-American War, the American Civil War, the Spanish-American War, and World War I. America remained committed to these ideas until cultural pressures and the successes of German Blitzkrieg from 1939 - 1940 led George C. Marshall to orchestrate the adoption of a different understanding of warfare. Michael A. Bonura examines concrete battlefield tactics, army regulations, and theoretical works on war as they were presented in American army education manuals, professional journals, and the popular press, to demonstrate that as a cultural construction, warfare and ways of warfare can be transnational and influence other nations.

Book Inside the Spanish American War

Download or read book Inside the Spanish American War written by James M. McCaffrey and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2009-04-22 with total page 231 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the story of the Spanish-American War, told not from the perspective of generals, policy makers, or politicians, but from that of the soldiers, sailors and marines in the field and the reporters who covered their efforts. Concentration on the daily lives of these people provides insight into the often overlooked facets of a soldier's life, detailing their training and interaction with weaponry, their food, clothing, and medical supplies, and their personal interactions and daily struggles. While the Spanish-American War set the stage for America's emergence as a global power, this is its history on an individual scale, as seen through the eyes of those upon whom the war had the most immediate impact.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “A tour de force in the way it embraces and weaves together the political, economic and military factors”—B. H. Liddell Hart “A work which sums up succinctly the learning of a life-time.”—New Statesman The Conduct of War, 1789-1961, which was originally published in 1961, is a study of the way in which political and economic changes since the French Revolution have altered both the techniques and the aims of war. The author begins by studying the limited wars that were possible in the age of absolute rulers, and the destructive impact of revolutionary and democratic government on this state of affairs. Not only did the new armies of the Napoleonic age grow immensely in size and military power: the aims for which the war was fought began to change. Now it is no longer a question of forcing the enemy government to change its policy in specific ways: the purpose is the destruction of that government and the absolute surrender of its people. Such a concept of war, the author contends, is a disastrous return to barbarism, and in this book he considers his study in the light of post-war events with Communist countries.
