Book Veteran MPs and Conservative Politics in the Aftermath of the Great War

Download or read book Veteran MPs and Conservative Politics in the Aftermath of the Great War written by Richard Carr and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-03-03 with total page 245 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Between 1918 and 1939, 448 men who performed uniformed service in the First World War became Conservative MPs. This relatively high-profile cohort have been under-explored as a distinct body, yet a study of their experiences of the war and the ways in which they - and the Conservative Party - represented those experiences to the voting public reveals much about the political culture of Interwar Britain and the use of the Great War as political capital. Radicalised ex-servicemen have, thus far, been considered a rather continental phenomenon historiographically. And whilst attitudes to Hitler and Mussolini form part of this analysis, the study also explores why there were fewer such types in Britain. The Conservative Party, it will be shown, played a crucial part in such a process - with British politics serving as a contested space for survivors' interpretations of what the war should mean.

Book Parties and Their Members

Download or read book Parties and Their Members written by Susan E. Scarrow and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 1996-03-21 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why would parties continue to care about membership enrollment in an age of television campaigning and direct-mail fundraising? To answer this question, Parties and their Members traces organizing strategies employed by British and German membership parties during the past half century. Using careful analysis of historical records and interviews with party officials, the author shows that party organizers have reacted to technological and social developments by modifyingtheir ideas about how members can help parties achieve their goals.

Download or read book Austerity in Britain written by Ina Zweiniger-Bargielowska and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2000-05-04 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Austerity in Britain is the first book to explore the entire episode of rationing, austerity, and fair shares from 1939 until 1955. These policies were central to the British war effort and to post-war reconstruction. The book analyses the connections between government policy, consumption, gender, and party politics during and after the Second World War. The economic background to austerity, the policy's administration, and changes in consumption standards are examined. Rationing resulted in at times extensive black markets and popular attitudes to the policy ranged from wartime acquiescence to post-war discontent. Austerity in Britain qualifies the myth of common sacrifice on the home front and highlights the limitations of the fair-shares policy which failed to achieve genuine equality between classes or between men and women. The continuation of rationing and austerity policies after 1945 was central to party politics. Disaffection, particularly among women, undermined Labour's popularity while the Conservatives' critique of austerity was instrumental to the party's victories at the general elections of 1951 and 1955.

Book excerpt: Originally published in 1976,this survey of policy-making in secondary education in Britain from 1944-1977, analyzes the relationship between the politician and the educationist and the part each plays in the policy-making process, paying particular attention to the role of central and local government, the teachers’ organizations and the political parties. Book The Holiday Makers

Download or read book The Holiday Makers written by Richard K. Popp and published by LSU Press. This book was released on 2012-05-16 with total page 233 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Between the 1930s and 1960s, the spread of new transportation networks and the democratization of paid vacations struck many observers as a sign that tourism was growing into a folkway of modern American life. Easy mobility and free time lay at the heart of this idealized vision, and vacations were seen as a ritualized expression of the movement and egalitarianism that characterized midcentury modernity. The Holiday Makers tells the story of how advertisers sold tourist travel in popular magazines during this era, transforming consumer culture in the process.

Book The Politics of Consumer Credit in the UK 1938 1992

Download or read book The Politics of Consumer Credit in the UK 1938 1992 written by Stuart Aveyard and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2018-08-30 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As early as the 1930s, Britain had a highly innovative and profitable mortgage sector that promoted a major extension in home ownership. These controversial and risky offerings had an equivalent in numerous hire purchase agreements, with which new homes were furnished. Such developments were forerunners of the 'easy credit' regime more commonly associated with the 1980s. Taking a long-term perspective on this issue indicates that Britain's departure from European models of consumer credit markets was not simply a by-product of neoliberalism's influence on the Thatcher administration, and this book offers a much fuller explanation to the phenomenon. It explores debates within and between the major political parties; reveals the infighting amongst civil service departments over management of consumer demand; charts the varying degrees of influence wielded by the Bank of England and finance capital, as opposed to that of consumer durable manufacturers; reviews the perspectives of consumers and their representatives; and explains the role of contingency and path dependency in these historical events. The central focus of this book is on consumer credit, but this subject provides a case study through which to explore numerous other important areas of British history. These include debates on the issues of post-war consensus, the impact of rising home ownership and its impact on consumer credit and personal finance markets, the management of consumer society, political responses to affluence, the development of consumer protection policy, and the influence of neoliberalism.
