Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Camp by Schuylkill Falls: A Paper Read Before the Historical Society of Pennsylvania, January 11, 1892 Let us, then, fill in this corner, cover the canvas, and tell the story. In the Itinerary of General Washington for the year 1777 (penna. Mag., Vol. XIV), I stated, on the authority of Colonel Pickering, adjutant-general, l that the main Conti neutal army encamped the first week of August and for two days in September, before and after the battle of Brandy wine, between Germantown and the Schuylkill River, near the Falls of Schuylkill, five miles from Philadelphia; but was not able to designate with any certainty the ground occupied. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first in a monumental two-volume set on the pivotal 1777 campaign of the American Revolution. • An in-depth examination of the military engagements that resulted in the British capture of Philadelphia. • The compelling account of the fight for the Continental capital, based on surviving accounts of soldiers and civilians "The Philadelphia Campaign is first-rate, an absorbing work of tenacious research and close scholarship. Thomas J. McGuire knows the time of the American Revolution and has been over the ground in and about Philadelphia in a way few writers ever have. But it is his empathy for the human reality of war and the great variety of people caught up in it, whether in the service of the king or the Glorious Cause of America, that makes this book especially alive and memorable." --David McCullough, author of John Adams and 1776

Download or read book Oil in Their Blood written by Herman K. Trabish and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2006-02 with total page 501 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This historical novel is a matriarch's remembrance of two oil industry families over three generations: In Pennsylvania, as the Civil War ends, oil industry pioneers fight to control the commodity, own the infrastructure and win the wealth; in the 1890s New York City of the Standard Oil barons, the second generation fights corruption and suffers romantic tragedy as the trade goes global; and, caught in the terrible horrors of World War I, the third generation learns what mature love--and oil--really mean to the emerging modern world. In lean, muscular prose and through relentless storytelling, the book (the first in a multivolume saga of oil's history) is a tour of the world's first oil producing regions, from Pennsylvania to Baku to Mesopotamia to Indonesia to Persia to Romania. It weaves hard fact with adventure, romance and melodrama to explore the metaphysical and stark cold truths about love, family, oil and our addiction to it.
