So even as advanced technology has eliminated some of the need for fans to be in close proximity to the teams they love to follow, there is still a need to understand more completely how proximity matters can impact the way professional baseball leagues are structured and how that structure can ultimately impact the quality of the games that entertain sports fans everywhere. Book excerpt: Thirty years into baseball's sabermetric revolution, relatively little attention has been paid to the impact of a major league umpire's ball-and-strike judgment on game results. This welcome study corrects this omission by profiling more than ninety current umpires, summarizing their professional history, and charting their performance at home plate from 2007 through 2010. Annual and four-season rankings place the umpires according to four categories: runs per nine innings, walks per nine innings, strikeouts per nine innings, and strikeout-to-walk ratio. The statistical analysis reveals that the home plate umpire's influence on a game can be huge, both in terms of runs scored and the distribution of walks and strikeouts. By introducing umpires as individuals and encouraging a rational discussion of their work, this examination depicts umpires as dynamic actors whose impact on the game can be measured, analyzed, and enjoyed.

These men were the pioneers of the sport. I think it important to remember how they lived, the author says. They worked hard, played hard and gave the game the grit it needed to survive. I especially hope young readers will take note of the way grew. Gawthorp says that over the years he has stumbled into a lot of stories he was unable to publish. Some are book worthy and some are still only short stories, fi ction and nonfiction, but I am still looking to put them on the public plate. I am being much assisted by technological advances in the publishing field. The Good Lord willing and the electric stays on the grid, I ve got enough to keep me busy. The author is an avid history buff and loves visiting historic locations, research and learning. He lived 22 years in West Virginia before retiring just over the mountain to Millboro, VA.
