Lovecraft's classic work of horror, illustrated in the style of Edward Gorey"The Call of Cthulhu" is the first in a series of H.P. Lovecraft stories illustrated in the art style of cartoonist/illustrator Edward Gorey. Though Gorey illustrated the writing of a large number of writer's work, including H.G. Welles' "War of the Worlds", for some reason, this wonderfully macabre writer/illustrator, never created illustrations of the work of H.P. Lovecraft. Cartoonist Jerry Voigt imagines what Lovecraft's work might have looked like if they had been illustrated by Gorey. The First in a SeriesStarting with "The Call of Cthulhu", Lovecraft's most famous story, Voigt will continue to release volumes of Lovecraft's stories illustrated in Gorey style. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Boston, 1926. Francis Thurston goes through documents left behind by his grandfather's brother, recently deceased under mysterious circumstances. He soon discovers the existence of a cult that worships ancient and unspeakable horrors. Mysterious murders, blood rituals in the depths of the Louisiana swamps, artists who descend into insanity after nightmarish visions, and a Cyclopean city that rises from the sea. Step by step, Thurston realizes that his relative's research got too close to the truth. In the shadows, there are those who want to wake the sleeping god Cthulhu in order to spread madness and destruction over the entire world. The stars are right. Is the end near? H.P. Lovecraft's The Call of Cthulhu, first published in 1928, is one of the greatest classics of American horror literature. Cthulhu himself, dreaming and waiting at the bottom of the sea, became a symbol for the entire mythology that Lovecraft created. A random murder in a public park. An artist wracked by fantastical and haunting dreams. A police inspector confronting the depraved rites of a voodoo cult. Intrepid sailors pitted against a diabolical monstrosity risen from the bottom of the sea. And one man, doomed to understand that such things foretell madness and the end of mankind.

Book THE CALL OF CTHULHU Horror Classic

Download or read book THE CALL OF CTHULHU Horror Classic written by H. P. Lovecraft and published by DigiCat. This book was released on 2023-12-08 with total page 42 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This carefully crafted ebook: "THE CALL OF CTHULHU (Horror Classic)" is formatted for your eReader with a functional and detailed table of contents. The Call of Cthulhu is one of Lovecraft's best-known works. It is the only story written by Lovecraft in which the extraterrestrial entity Cthulhu himself makes a major appearance. Narrator Francis Wayland Thurston, recounts his discovery of the strange notes left behind by his granduncle, George Gammell Angell, a prominent Professor of Semitic languages at Brown University. At first the story revolves around a small bas-relief sculpture found among the papers, which the narrator describes: "My somewhat extravagant imagination yielded simultaneous pictures of an octopus, a dragon, and a human caricature.... A pulpy, tentacled head surmounted a grotesque and scaly body with rudimentary wings". The sculpture is the work of Henry Anthony Wilcox, a student at the Rhode Island School of Design who based the work on delirious dreams of "great Cyclopean cities of titan blocks and sky-flung monoliths, all dripping with green ooze and sinister with latent horror". Frequent references to Cthulhu and R'lyeh are found in papers authored by Wilcox. Angell also discovers reports of "outre mental illnesses and outbreaks of group folly or mania" around the world (in New York City, "hysterical Levantines" mob police; in California, a Theosophist colony dons white robes to await a "glorious fulfillment")... Howard Phillips Lovecraft (1890-1937) was an American author who achieved posthumous fame through his influential works of horror fiction. He is now regarded as one of the most significant 20th-century authors in his genre. Some of Lovecraft's work was inspired by his own nightmares. His interest started from his childhood days when his grandfather would tell him Gothic horror stories.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The Call of Cthulhu" by Howard Phillips H. P. Lovecraft is one of the classic horror works, so called "Lovecraft horrors". American author of horror, fantasy, and science fiction, Lovecraft's major inspiration and invention was cosmic horror; the idea that life is incomprehensible to human minds and that the universe is fundamentally alien. Those who genuinely reason, like his protagonists, gamble with sanity. Lovecraft has developed a cult following for his Cthulhu Mythos, a series of loosely interconnected fiction featuring a pantheon of human-nullifying entities, as wellas the Necronomicon, a fictional grimoire of magical rites and forbidden lore. His works were deeply pessimistic and cynical, challenging the values of the Enlightenment, Romanticism, and Christian humanism. Lovecraft'sprotagonists usually achieve the mirror-opposite of traditional gnosis and mysticism by momentarily glimpsing the horror of ultimate reality. Some people adore it, some people find it way too long (reading it is definitely work), but everyone agrees it's a monumental story that ties together the universe where "The Call of Cthulhu," The Shadow Over Innsmouth, "The Dunwich Horror," and lots of other stories exist. A group of explorers go to Antarctica and discover evidence of a previous civilization. I don't want to spoil the surprises, but I can at least tell you the big discovery the explorers make: There are things that evenmonsters fear. Famous works of the author Howard Phillips Lovecraft: At the Mountains of Madness, The Dreams in the Witch House, The Horror at Red Hook, The Shadow Out of Time, The Shadows over Innsmouth, The Alchemist, Herbert West: Reanimator, Ex Oblivione, Azathoth, The Call of Cthulhu, The Cats of Ulthar, The Outsider, The Picture in the House, The Shunned House, The Terrible Old Man, The Tomb, What the Moon Brings. It is the only story written by Lovecraft in which the extraterrestrial entity Cthulhu himself makes a major appearance. It is written in a documentary style, with three independent narratives linked together by the device of a narrator discovering notes left by a deceased relative. The narrator pieces together the whole truth and disturbing significance of the information he possesses, illustrating the story's first line: "The most merciful thing in the world, I think, is the inability of the human mind to correlate all its contents. We live on a placid island of ignorance in the midst of black seas of infinity; and it was not meant that we should voyage far."
