Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An exploration of the history of the sixty-mile, Scottish Highland canal and its significance to the region’s transportation and tourism. Thomas Telford’s plan, to connect Loch Ness, Loch Oich, and Loch Lochy with each other and the sea, was a huge undertaking that brought civil engineering to the Highlands on a heroic scale. Deep in the Highlands, far from the canal network of England, engineers forged their way through the Great Glen to construct the biggest canal of its day: twenty-two miles of artificial cutting and no fewer than twenty-eight locks. A.D. (Sandy) Cameron’s book has long been recognized as the authoritative work on the canal as well as a reliable and useful guide to the surrounding area. There are intriguing old plans, not discovered until 1992, and a survey of the dramatic rise in pleasure-craft traffic during the last two decades. But the highlight of the recent past was undoubtedly the Tall Ships passing through the canal in stately procession in 1991. Impossible, then, not to feel the fascination of this beautiful waterway: a working piece of industrial history and a remarkable engineering achievement. This book is a fitting celebration of this remarkable feat of engineering.

Book excerpt: Seasoned stomper Julia Bradbury dons her walking boots once again to explore the canals of Britain and their accompanying towpath trails. Accompanying the four part BBC television series, the walks featured in this book follow a hidden network of locks, bridges, aqueducts and tunnels, perfect for walkers wanting to explore on foot. It was canals that transformed Britain into an economic superpower, the transport arteries at the heart of an expanding industrial age. By the late 1700s Canal Mania was sweeping the nation and a new and growing network of transport superhighways dominated the landscape. Canals had arrived connecting towns and cities with Britain's industrial heartlands and export hubs. Here are four of the best walks, all offering an insight into Britain's industrial heritage. Navigating Highland Glens, rolling countryside, river valleys and our industrial heartland these waterways cut a sedate path through some of the country's finest scenery. Today, over 2,000 miles of restored canals offer a gateway into a different world. This book covers four different walks: 1. Llangollen Canal- 'A Stream Through The Skies' (North Wales) 2. Caledonian Canal- 'From Coast to Coast' (Highlands) 3. Worcester & Birmingham Canal- 'Industrial Revelations' (Birmingham) 4. Kennet & Avon Canal- 'Restoration & Renaissance' (Bath)

Download or read book Adrift In Caledonia written by Nick Thorpe and published by Abacus. This book was released on 2009-12-03 with total page 281 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One clear morning in May, Nick Thorpe left his Edinburgh flat, ducked off the commuter route and hitched a ride aboard a little white canal boat, heading west towards the sea. It was the first mutinous step in a delightful boat-hopping odyssey that would take him 2500 miles through Scotland's canals, lochs and coastal waters, from the industrial Clyde to the scattered islands of Viking Shetland. Writing with characteristic humour and candour, the award-winning author of EIGHT MEN AND A DUCK plots a curiously existential voyage, inspired by those who have left the warm hearth for the promise of a stretched horizon. Whether rowing a coracle with a chapter of monks, scanning for the elusive Nessie, hitting the rocks with Captain Calamity or clinging to the rigging of a tall ship, Thorpe weaves a narrative that is by turns funny and poignant - a nautical pilgrimage for any who have ever been tempted to try a new path just to see where it might take them. Part travelogue, part memoir, ADRIFT IN CALEDONIA is a unique and affectionate portrait of a sea-fringed nation - and of the drifter's quest to belong.

Book An Institutional Approach to the G ta kanal

Download or read book An Institutional Approach to the G ta kanal written by Björn Hasselgren and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2023-12-25 with total page 115 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is based on an institutional evolutionary theoretical view to the Göta kanal. Canals were the major transport infrastructure system besides roads and maritime transport until railroads were introduced. The canal studied is the Swedish Göta kanal project during the preparation and construction phase from 1800–1832. Thus, the Göta kanal, and the canal-era, is seen from a technological, an economic and a political perspective. Comparisons are made with two contemporary major canal-projects; the Erie Canal in the USA (1817–1825) and the Caledonian Canal in Britain (1804–1822). It is argued that the Göta kanal project, as Sweden's Mega Project of its time, represented an important development step in Sweden as regards learning and innovation and became a starting point for Swedish transport infrastructure projects in the time to come, primarily the railways.
