Book The Bushel and the Candlestick

Download or read book The Bushel and the Candlestick written by Priest John and published by Tate Publishing. This book was released on 2009-04 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Christmas Eve. You are hours away from a three thousand-mile flight cross-country. The phone rings. Your great friend tells you that she wont make it through the night without your help. What would you do? A doctor tells your daughter that her seven-day-old son had a tumor and might not survive. What would you do? Many Christians believe we are living in the post-Christian era, a time when God is no longer sought for comfort and assurance. The Bushel and the Candlestick, by Priest John, proclaims Nine Lifesaving Miracles that will serve to instill great hope in a society languishing in near-spiritual despair. Personal accounts of the saving power of God, accompanied by scriptural support, will bless readers in a time of question, a time of hopelessness, a time of despair, and will remind those faithful to shine their light brightly, for neither do men light a candle, and put it under a bushel, (basket) but on a candlestick; and it giveth light unto all that are in the house. Let your light so shine before men, and glorify your Father which is in heaven (Matthew 5:15-16, KJV).

Book Holy Writ as Oral Lit

Download or read book Holy Writ as Oral Lit written by Alan Dundes and published by Rowman & Littlefield Publishers. This book was released on 2000-01-01 with total page 141 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book helps us resolve some of the mysteries and contradictions that evolved during the Bible's pre-written legacy and that persist in the Great Book today. Most biblical scholars acknowledge that both the Old and New Testaments were orally transmitted for decades before appearing in written form. With great reverence for the Bible, Dundes offers a new and exciting way to understand its variant texts. He uses the analytical framework of folklore to unearth and contrast the multiple versions of nearly every major biblical event, including the creation of woman, the flood, the ten commandments (there were once as many as eleven or twelve), the names of the twelve tribes, the naming of the disciples, the Sermon on the Mount, the Lord's Prayer, and the words inscribed on the Cross, among many others.

Book Apropos of Ideology

Download or read book Apropos of Ideology written by Maria Calzada-Perez and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-04-08 with total page 218 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Today's worldwide ideological tensions have captured the interest of such varied disciplines as political science, anthropology, sociology, cultural studies and linguistics. There are two primary reasons why translation studies cannot ignore the ideological debate. Historically, translation has always been a site for ideological clashes. In addition, globalization is now setting off translational mechanisms even within monolingual artifacts, and this calls for the expertise of translation scholars. Apropos of Ideology aims to contribute to the broader discussion of ideology by providing a forum for debating ideological issues in translation as well as by bringing together, within the pages of a single volume, different types of translation research, informed by very different research ideologies. Adopting a wide definition of ideology as a set of ideas, beliefs and codes of behaviour that "govern a community by virtue of being regarded as the norm", a number of translation scholars look into ideological phenomena as they impinge on the process of translation. They consider questions of politics, but also reflect upon gender, sexuality, religion, secularity, technology and even the very discipline of translation studies. At the same time, the volume displays the kaleidoscopic complexity of the discipline while providing a strong argument that such diversity of perspectives is highly desirable. Contributors include Maria Tymoczko, Rosemary Arrojo, Christiane Nord, Keith Harvey, Peter Fawcett, Ma Carmen Africa Vidal, Christina Schäffner, David Katan, Francesco Straniero-Sergio, and Sehnaz Tahir.

  • Author : Paul Winton Saunders

Download or read book The Parables of Jesus written by Paul Winton Saunders and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2022-10-09 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Parables of Jesus examines Jewish customs during biblical times to reveal lessons on life, living, and walking with the Lord. You’ll encounter the figures that Jesus used in his stories: the unjust judge who neither feared God or man, the self-righteous Pharisee and the humble publican in the temple, the fickle children in the marketplace, the unforgiving servant, and others exhibiting traits as compassion, jealousy, and greed. Pastor Paul Saunders makes the point that Jesus was appalled with the hypocritical nature of Jewish religious leadership. They made a great show of righteousness, but their behavior was corrupt—and Jesus was not afraid to call it out. The parables are brilliant, relevant, pithy, and personally challenging. Jesus uses everyday activities, with which we are all familiar, to illustrate a deeper truth. Although numerous scholars have written about the parables of Jesus, this book takes a fresh approach, looking at them in context and exploring the relevance they have today.
