Book Tracking the Bullet Saved My Child

Download or read book Tracking the Bullet Saved My Child written by Demetri Bell and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2010-03-22 with total page 173 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I grew up in the City of Chicago, attended Rezin Orr High School on the near northwest side of Chicago, graduated in 1980, and attended the College of Automation computer School. I have spent the majority of my life working with computers, which I deem to have been a very rewarding field as well as educational. During my twenty-nine-year tenure in the information technology field, I have seen the computer industry technology really skyrocket into a very sophisticated technology that have affected our lives in so many ways that we depend on computers to the point that it has become a way of life for us. You cant go to any major supermarket nowadays without the cash registers being computerized in some way, shape, or form. They even have check out lines where you dont even need a cashier to ring you up. You can do it yourself by scanning the barcode of your purchases and the computer will check the price through a computerized database and come back with the right price. The most fascinating thing about computers is the security mechanisms that have been put in place to help facilitate protection and control. Even homeland security depends on computers in protecting and saving lives to some degree or another. So it just makes sense to use computerized technology in other areas of our lives that not only enhance, but can also prevent a potential harmful element from ruining our lives. Computerized technology used in conjunction with controlling how a person uses his gun can save lives. And really, after everything else is failing isnt it time we came up with a winwinwin solution to todays problems? This is what this book will present. Solutions that solve problems.

Book The Four Fingers of Death

Download or read book The Four Fingers of Death written by Rick Moody and published by Little, Brown. This book was released on 2010-07-28 with total page 736 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Montese Crandall is a downtrodden writer whose rare collection of baseball cards won't sustain him, financially or emotionally, through the grave illness of his wife. Luckily, he swindles himself a job churning out a novelization of the 2025 remake of a 1963 horror classic, The Crawling Hand. Crandall tells therein of the United States, in a bid to regain global eminence, launching at last its doomed manned mission to the desolation of Mars. Three space pods with nine Americans on board travel three months, expecting to spend three years as the planet's first colonists. When a secret mission to retrieve a flesh-eating bacterium for use in bio-warfare is uncovered, mayhem ensues. Only a lonely human arm (missing its middle finger) returns to earth, crash-landing in the vast Sonoran Desert of Arizona. The arm may hold the secret to reanimation or it may simply be an infectious killing machine. In the ensuing days, it crawls through the heartbroken wasteland of a civilization at its breaking point, economically and culturally -- a dystopia of lowlife, emigration from America, and laughable lifestyle alternatives. The Four Fingers of Death is a stunningly inventive, sometimes hilarious, monumental novel. It will delight admirers of comic masterpieces like Slaughterhouse-Five, The Crying of Lot 49, and Catch-22.

Book Last Night a Superhero Saved My Life

Download or read book Last Night a Superhero Saved My Life written by Liesa Mignogna and published by Macmillan. This book was released on 2016-06-07 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As broad as our exponentially growing cultural fascination with caped crusaders is, it runs just as deep as this long awaited anthology underscores. Liesa Mignogna the VP, Editorial Director at Simon Pulse and editor of this anthology can expound on the virtues of Batman (her wedding was even Batman-themed) but it's her retelling of incredibly harrowing yet ultimately inspiring encounters with The Dark Knight over the years, as she struggled to coexist with the supervillains in her own family that birthed this collection. Last Night, A Superhero Saved My Life gives readers the chance to connect to their beloved authors, while those same authors connect to their beloved superheroes, and within that feedback loop of respect and admiration lies a stellar, and phenomenally accessible, anthology full of thrills, chills, and spills. Contributors include New York Times bestsellers Christopher Golden, Leigh Bardugo, Brad Meltzer, Neil Gaiman, Carrie Vaughn, Jodi Picoult, and Jamie Ford, as well as award-winners and mainstays like Joe R. Lansdale, Karina Cooper, and Ron Currie, Jr among many others. Last Night, A Superhero Saved My Life's authors share their most hilarious and most heart wrenching experiences with their chosen defender to explain why superheroes matter, what they tell us about who we are, and what they mean for our future.

Download or read book How Not to Be Wrong written by Jordan Ellenberg and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2015-05-26 with total page 482 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Witty, compelling, and just plain fun to read . . ." —Evelyn Lamb, Scientific American The Freakonomics of math—a math-world superstar unveils the hidden beauty and logic of the world and puts its power in our hands The math we learn in school can seem like a dull set of rules, laid down by the ancients and not to be questioned. In How Not to Be Wrong, Jordan Ellenberg shows us how terribly limiting this view is: Math isn’t confined to abstract incidents that never occur in real life, but rather touches everything we do—the whole world is shot through with it. Math allows us to see the hidden structures underneath the messy and chaotic surface of our world. It’s a science of not being wrong, hammered out by centuries of hard work and argument. Armed with the tools of mathematics, we can see through to the true meaning of information we take for granted: How early should you get to the airport? What does “public opinion” really represent? Why do tall parents have shorter children? Who really won Florida in 2000? And how likely are you, really, to develop cancer? How Not to Be Wrong presents the surprising revelations behind all of these questions and many more, using the mathematician’s method of analyzing life and exposing the hard-won insights of the academic community to the layman—minus the jargon. Ellenberg chases mathematical threads through a vast range of time and space, from the everyday to the cosmic, encountering, among other things, baseball, Reaganomics, daring lottery schemes, Voltaire, the replicability crisis in psychology, Italian Renaissance painting, artificial languages, the development of non-Euclidean geometry, the coming obesity apocalypse, Antonin Scalia’s views on crime and punishment, the psychology of slime molds, what Facebook can and can’t figure out about you, and the existence of God. Ellenberg pulls from history as well as from the latest theoretical developments to provide those not trained in math with the knowledge they need. Math, as Ellenberg says, is “an atomic-powered prosthesis that you attach to your common sense, vastly multiplying its reach and strength.” With the tools of mathematics in hand, you can understand the world in a deeper, more meaningful way. How Not to Be Wrong will show you how.
