Book Building of the Oroville Dam The

Download or read book Building of the Oroville Dam The written by Larry R. Matthews and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2014 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the early 1960s, thousands of construction workers and their families came to Oroville, in Northern California, to help build the largest earth-fill dam in the world. Located nine miles northeast of town, the Oroville Dam would be the cornerstone of the California State Water Project, which would provide flood control, electric power, recreation, and water to California residents. The project was so massive that it would reinvent the look of much of the area; require the building of roads, bridges, and railroads; inundate much of the area's history under hundreds of feet of water; and greatly effect the lives of the residents of Oroville. The successful completion of the project came at a price--34 construction workers died.

Book The Lost Communities of Lake Oroville

Download or read book The Lost Communities of Lake Oroville written by Larry R. Matthews and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2016-11-14 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1968, Lake Oroville flooded the West Branch, North Fork, Middle Fork, and South Fork canyons of the Feather River. Also inundated were the communities of Las Plumas, the Big Bend Power House, Bidwell Bar, and Enterprise. In 1994, Feather Falls Village, located above the lake, also ceased to exist due to a totally different situation. But all of these communities had one thing in common: there were people who had resided in them for decades and who still have an emotional connection to them. This book attempts to preserve some of the history of those areas and also tries to show some of what it was like to live in those now almost forgotten communities.

Download or read book Oroville California written by Donna Lenhoff and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2001-06-01 with total page 134 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Oroville, California, has always been a land of innovation and resource. While the Feather River was dredged for millions in gold in the late-19th century, the climate of Oroville was discovered to be well suited to growing oranges and olives, as well for a viable logging industry. One of America's first electric railroads passed through the town, and in 1937, the Feather River Highway stretched all the way to Reno. In 1968, the largest dam in the nation was constructed, and that feat of engineering provided electricity to a large number of California residents. Captured here in over 200 vintage images, James Lenhoff shows readers a California town that boomed with the Gold Rush and today remains a thriving community. Showcasing photographs from personal and community collections, the images in this book portray the residents that made Oroville what it is today, from the famous miners to the local farmers. Here are stunning vintage and rarely seen photographs of Oroville, including the foothills, the Feather River Canyon, and the building of its famous dam.

Book Contested Knowledges

Download or read book Contested Knowledges written by Esha Shah and published by MDPI. This book was released on 2019-05-20 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Water acquisition, storage, allocation and distribution are intensely contested in our society, whether, for instance, such issues pertain to a conflict between upstream and downstream farmers located on a small stream or to a large dam located on the border of two nations. Water conflicts are mostly studied as disputes around access to water resources or the formulation of water laws and governance rules. However, explicitly or not, water conflicts nearly always also involve disputes among different philosophical views. The contributions to this edited volume have looked at the politics of contested knowledge as manifested in the conceptualisation, design, development, implementation and governance of large dams and mega-hydraulic infrastructure projects in various parts of the world. The special issue has explored the following core questions: Which philosophies and claims on mega-hydraulic projects are encountered, and how are they shaped, validated, negotiated and contested in concrete contexts? Whose knowledge counts and whose knowledge is downplayed in water development conflict situations, and how have different epistemic communities and cultural-political identities shaped practices of design, planning and construction of dams and mega-hydraulic projects? The contributions have also scrutinised how these epistemic communities interactively shape norms, rules, beliefs and values about water problems and solutions, including notions of justice, citizenship and progress that are subsequently to become embedded in material artefacts.

Book Infrastructure of America s Ports Harbors and Dams

Download or read book Infrastructure of America s Ports Harbors and Dams written by Marty Gitlin and published by Mitchell Lane. This book was released on 2019-07-04 with total page 74 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ports, harbors and dams all serve great purposes. Dams prevent flooding. They provide a wall against onrushing water to protect people below. Ports and harbors allow ships to arrive from all over the world. Those ships import and export goods that people use. They create jobs and boost the economy. But there is a dark side explored in this book. The dams, ports, and harbors that are not maintained can suffer. The result is that people suffer. Dams can burst and cause flooding that have killed people. Ports and harbors are often filled with garbage and sewage. That is unhealthy and even dangerous for people and wildlife. Their waters are sometimes not deep enough to accept heavy ships. These pages will explain what is being done about those dams, ports, and harbors. Can they be saved?
