Book excerpt: With so much apparent alien activity and presence on our planet, what would happen if an American actually took a swing at a UFO and landed a punch? Who in Washington would take that call? What would such a government agency look like? How would it function in such a crisis? How would the aliens respond? This is the nexus of this novel. This disaster occurs in Indiana’s Hoosier National Forest two weeks before a close Presidential election. The incumbent President tries to keep a lid on the events that start erupting in southern Indiana in the wake of the UFO’s destruction. The aliens pursue the wannabe militia-men Jimmie Hatter and his buddy Brian Spangle who inadvertently destroyed an alien space craft. But so does a super-secret U.S. agency called ORA (Office of Retrieval and Analysis). The frantic search for the perpetrators is punctuated by explosions, firestorms and mysterious deaths the President and ORA seek to keep under wraps two weeks before the election. At the same time Indiana’s Governor Kasson of the opposite party senses a cover-up revolving around the mysterious and frightening happenings in his state and tries to unmask them to benefit his own re-election and elevate his standing by bringing down the President. In this riveting narrative, the author connects the dots regarding phenomenon reported by Americans for decades but denied by authorities. The narrative evokes some unsettling possibilities about the presence of aliens, strange creatures and what may be the real reasons behind the alien presence on earth. In the mayhem of events in this novel, will these secrets be revealed? Will the President be re-elected? Will Governor Kasson triumph? How prepared are we for the alien challenge? And what happens to our hapless, inadvertent protagonists Jimmie and Brian; two sympathetic, deplorable roofers who just wanted to defend the country, but must flee for their lives.

Book From Darkroom to Lightroom

Download or read book From Darkroom to Lightroom written by Ken Milburn and published by "O'Reilly Media, Inc.". This book was released on 2006-09-21 with total page 62 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Even though Adobe's Lightroom is far from complete at the time of this writing and will likely have "many" (Adobe's word) new and changed features by the time it is released, it can make a major change to your workflow right now. And while it's still in beta, it's free. Furthermore, although unfinished, the product is extremely productive. It will do quite a bit more than Camera Raw and, at least in the Macintosh version, performs its tasks at several times the speed and with a lot more workflow efficiency. (Currently, Adobe's new Windows version is in need of performance and feature improvements as it can be unbearably slow, especially when showing images at 100 percent resolution. Adobe assures us that this is a transitional state of affairs.) At the time of this writing, Adobe had just released the Windows version, and had also upgraded its Mac version to run in a universal version that would take full advantage of Apple's new Intel CoreDuo processors. (Lightroom's major competitor, Apple Aperture, does not have a Windows version, and Lightroom is not the hardware hog Aperture is, either.) In this revised and updated Short Cut, I introduce you to the Lightroom (Beta 3) workflow, its fives modules, and its particular appeal to RAW shooters. I also include coverage of the new Windows version of Lightroom.

Book excerpt: On Jeroun, there is no question as to whether God exists--only what his intentions are. Under the looming judgment of Adrash and his ultimate weapon--a string of spinning spheres beside the moon known as The Needle--warring factions of white and black suits prove their opposition to the orbiting god with the great fighting tournament of Tchootoo, on the far side of Jeroun's only inhabitable continent. From the Thirteenth Order of Black Suits comes Vedas, a young master of martial arts, laden with guilt over the death of one of his students. Traveling with him are Churls, a warrior woman and mercenary haunted by the ghost of her daughter, and Manshep, a constructed man made of modular spheres possessed by the foul spirit of his creator. Together they must brave their own demons, as well as thieves, mages, beasts, dearth, and hardship on the perilous road to Tchootoo, and the bloody sectarian battle that is sure to follow. On the other side of the world, unbeknownst to the travelers, Ebn and Pol of the Royal Outbound Mages (astronauts using Alchemical magic to achieve space flight) have formed a plan to appease Adrash and bring peace to the planet. But Ebn and Pol each have their own clandestine agendas--which may call down the wrath of the very god they hope to woo. Who may know the mind of God? And who in their right mind would seek to defy him? Gritty, erotic, and fast-paced, author Zachary Jernigan takes you on a sensuous ride through a world at the knife-edge of salvation and destruction, in one of the year's most exciting fantasy epics.
