Book excerpt: Grafting and Budding: A Practical Guide for Fruit and Nut Plants and Ornamentals is an updated and expanded version of Grafting and Budding Fruit and Nut Trees and now includes the grafting of ornamental plants. It is a comprehensive and clearly written, practical guide to all of the grafting and budding techniques any professional or home gardener is likely to need. The book begins with a brief history of the subject, explains how grafting works and shows why it is now the preferred technique for propagating most commercial plants. It then describes the basics of budding, grafting and multi-grafting and presents step-by-step instructions for making the special cuts used in grafting and budding. Advice is also given on the selection of scion wood, the preparation of rootstocks and the after-care of grafted plants. The methods of budding and grafting are explained in fine detail, including T-budding, chip budding and patch budding, the splice graft, wedge graft, whip and tongue graft, side graft, bark graft and approach graft, the grafting of herbaceous plants and machine bench grafting. More than 60 sketches and photographs are included to help illustrate various aspects of the skill of grafting. New to this edition are sections covering the preferred methods of propagation for Australian natives such as eucalypts, banksias, hakeas and grevilleas; cacti; conifers; general deciduous ornamentals; black passionfruit; roses and tomatoes, making it an indispensable addition to any avid gardener’s bookshelf.

You will learn how trees grow, which species grow best in the different regions and soils, varieties from which to select, preparing the soil, planting, watering and fertilizing, pruning and grafting, thinning the fruit, diagnosing problems, controlling pests, and harvesting. This book was released on 2013 with total page 96 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many people mistakenly believe that fruit trees grow true to name from seeds . In reality, if you collect seed from a fruit grown on a plant, the seeds will produce plants that will be a hybrid of two plants . The new plant will be the same kind of plant, but its fruit and vegetative portions may not look the same as the parent because the plant is "heterozygous ." Therefore, all fruit trees must be vegetatively propagated by either grafting or budding methods . Fruit growers frequently use grafting techniques to topwork new varieties or strains of fruit onto established trees bearing misnamed or obsolete varieties and to repair injury or damage caused by mice, rabbits, deer, or mechanical means . Commercial nursery workers propagate new fruit trees, and producing a tree ready for planting takes several years . All of the temperate-zone deciduous fruit plants may be propagated by budding . Cleft, whip, and bridge grafting of apple and pear is possible, but such grafts are not often successful on stone fruits . Sweet cherry and, occasionally, peach may be successfully grafted using the side graft onto a 2- to 3-year-old limb .
