Book Four Travel Journals The Americas Antarctica and Africa 1775 1874

Download or read book Four Travel Journals The Americas Antarctica and Africa 1775 1874 written by R. J. Campbell and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-05-15 with total page 472 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume offers annotated texts with biographical and historical introductions of four previously unpublished travel journals from the period 1775-1874. The first of these is the journal of a participant in a Spanish expedition sent from Mexico to explore the north-west coast of America. From the outset, difficulties plagued the voyage. Bodega's ship, a small schooner named Sonora, was not designed for open-ocean voyaging. A landing party was attacked and killed; midway into the voyage the Sonora became separated from her flagship; and later she was nearly capsized by a massive wave. Bodega's journal records the voyage's travails, hardships, discoveries, and eventual return. Next comes the journal of Commander Stokes, who served in command of HMS Beagle, under Captain P. P. King during the survey of the Straits of Magellan in 1827. This is an account of a detached operation, in very difficult weather conditions, in the western part of the strait. It is introduced by remarks on the expedition and the hydrographic history of the strait from its discovery to the inception of the survey and supplemented by remarks from Captain King's account and also that of the clerk, Macdouall. The third text is the journal of a young midshipman in HMS Chanticleer, a small vessel commanded by Henry Foster, RN, who had recently been elected a Fellow of the Royal Society for his scientific work in the Arctic. The voyage of 1828-31 was to make observations in the South Atlantic to determine the shape of the Earth and to ascertain the longitudes of a number of ports. Kay's lively diary describes the Chanticleer's encounters with warships of the Brazilian navy, largely manned by Englishmen. He records his struggle to take observations at Deception Island during gales and snowstorms, and near Cape Horn in fierce squalls and constant chilling rain, nevertheless remaining cheerful in the company of his fellow midshipmen. The final piece is the diary of Jacob Wainwright.

Book Ethical and Responsible Tourism

Download or read book Ethical and Responsible Tourism written by Marko Koščak and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-05-10 with total page 559 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ethical and Responsible Tourism explains the methods and practices used to manage the environmental impact of tourism on local communities and destinations. This new edition takes into account recent global events such as the Covid-19 health crisis, the impacts of the war in Ukraine on tourism in neighbouring regions and the consequences of the energy and cost of living crisis. The three core themes of the book – destination management, environmental and social aspects of ethical sustainable development and business impacts – are discussed across both topic and case study chapters, alongside explanatory editorial analysis with all chapters clearly signposted and interlinked. The case studies address specific and practical examples from a global range of examples including sites in Australasia, Central America, Europe, Asia, North America and South America. In this new edition, further case studies are included from the USA and Japan, as well as new examples from Brazil, Croatia and Malta. Used as a core textbook, the linking of theory in the topic chapters, and practice gained through case studies, alongside further reading and editorial commentary, Ethical and Responsible Tourism provides a detailed and comprehensive learning experience. Specific case studies can be used as standalone examples as part of a case teaching approach, and the editorial and discussion elements are designed to be suitable for those simply seeking a concise overview, such as tourism professionals or potential investors in sustainable tourism projects. This revised edition continues to be essential reading for students, researchers and practitioners of tourism, environmental and sustainability studies.

Book Tourism and Monarchy in Southeast Asia

Download or read book Tourism and Monarchy in Southeast Asia written by Ploysri Porananond and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2016-09-23 with total page 266 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Monarchies around the world play a significant role in tourism development and the tourist experience. Debates about the level of finance required to support monarchies often refer to the positive tourist attraction provided by royal pageantry, palaces, temples and churches, architecture, museum collections, and historical legacies. Up to now, the literature on tourism and monarchy has been primarily devoted to the history and experiences of Western Europe, particularly the United Kingdom. There has been little attention devoted to the relationship between monarchy and tourism development in Southeast Asia, and this is the first collection of essays to address this neglected field of study. The need to shift the focus from European to Asian royalty is important not only to begin to fill gaps in the literature on monarchy and tourism outside Europe, but also to avoid the increasing criticism of tourism studies that its major perspectives, orientations and paradigms have been based on an overly Eurocentric preoccupation. Case studies are taken from Thailand, Laos, Myanmar, Vietnam, Malaysia, Indonesia, Brunei Darussalam and Singapore.
