Book excerpt: The history of Brown County has been shaped largely by the Ohio River. It has allowed farmers and industries to transport their products and provided recreation, entertainment, and travel opportunities to the residents of the community. Even though flooding of the river brought destruction many times, it also enabled freedom for thousands of slaves. Under abolitionist leaders like John Rankin and John Parker, parts of Brown County became known as the "Grand Central Station" of the Underground Railroad. Interesting and notable Brown County natives include Ulysses S. Grant, who grew up to command one of the largest armies ever assembled and later became president of the United States; Col. Charles Young, the third African American to graduate from West Point and a military attache to Liberia; Rosie Riles, better known as "Aunt Jemima"; and Joe Smith, who inadvertently helped Louis Armstrong's career, also hailed from this great county.

Book More Brown County Stories

Download or read book More Brown County Stories written by George Monroe and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2006-12-21 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this book is to share some of the fun and interesting things that happened when I was growing up in Brown County. The stories offered here were told to my five daughters around campfires and at many bedtime sessions as they were growing up. They requested that I tell them over and over again. They heard these stories, and many others like them, so many times they said they felt like they actually grew up with Cobweb, and Virgil, and Hazel, and Sis, and Bobby, and Stretch. After many retellings I was once obliged to let my youngest daughter know that I had told her everything I could remember, or even make up. To which she replied, “OK then, just start over.” The various accounts of these uncommon experiences were reinforced for my daughters when they visited their grandmother who lived in Nashville, the County Seat of Brown County, and were able to explore the territory where they took place. All of these stories are based on things that actually happened to me and other live people in the good old days in Brown County. They are as true as creative memory will allow.

Download or read book History of Brown County Wisconsin Vol 1 written by Deborah B. Martin and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-09-17 with total page 466 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of Brown County Wisconsin, Vol. 1: Past and Present Notwithstanding this ruthless hacking away from the parent stem, Brown county continues to be regarded as the most important in Wisconsin. In point of history the rest of the state is obliged to stand as a blank num ber up to 1840, while Brown county furnishes interesting material by the volume for every United States history that finds its way to the public library shelves. It is a wealthy county, the assessed valuation in the government census of 1910 placing it twelfth in the long line of its larger sister counties. In population to the square mile Brown stands fifth in the state, the counties averaging higher being Kenosha, Milwaukee, Racine and Winnebago. The total farm acreage is on which farms are located. Of these are owned and operated by the farmer himself, 2-46 are under lease, and 20 are owned by farmers who employ a manager to look after the property.
