Very little has appeared about the interaction between the two. This painstaking and well-researched study, based on a wide variety of primary sources, especially hitherto unpublished letters, helpsto fill many of the existing gaps and is an admirable addition to scholarly knowledge of Sarawak under the White Rajahs and British missionary activity there.

Book Power and Prowess

Download or read book Power and Prowess written by JH Walker and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-09-02 with total page 297 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A significant reinterpretation of Sarawak history, Power and Prowess explores the network of power, economic and ritual relationships that developed on the northwest coast of Borneo in the mid-nineteenth century, from which a coalition led by James Brooke established the state of Sarawak. Where many authors placed Brooke in the context of nineteenth century British imperialism, this study perceives him in the context of Bornean cultures and political economies. Brooke emerges from the historical record as a 'man of prowess', with the author identifying important ritual sources of Brooke's power among Malays, Bidayuh and Ibans, sources which derived from and expressed indigenous cultural traditions about fertility, health and status. Drawing on conceptual frameworks from political science, as well as recent southeast Asian historiography, Power and Prowess offers a detailed political history of the period and new interpretations of Brooke's career. This study also retrieves from the historical sources previously concealed narratives which reflect the interests, priorities and activities of Sarawak people themselves. J.H. WALKER lectures in political science at the University of New South Wales at the Australian Defence Force Academy.

Book Economic Change in East Malaysia

Download or read book Economic Change in East Malaysia written by A. Kaur and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-01-12 with total page 310 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An authoritative economic history of Sabah and Sarawak since the 19th century emphasising their distinctive colonial history and the attempts to modernise them since they became part of Malaysia in 1963. They remain dependent on the production and export of a relatively small range of primary products. The considerable scrutiny from environmentalists and international and local pressure groups of timber exports in particular is examined. The book's examination of economic strategy in these states since the 1880s, demonstrates that the roots of the problems in the 1980s lay in policies formulated in the wider context of capitalist economic growth.

Book Sylvia Queen of the Headhunters

Download or read book Sylvia Queen of the Headhunters written by Philip Eade and published by Picador. This book was released on 2014-06-03 with total page 385 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: THE EXTRAORDINARY TALE OF SYLVIA BROOKE, THE LAST WHITE RULER OF THE JUNGLE KINGDOM OF BORNEO Sylvia Brooke was one of the more exotic and outrageous figures of the twentieth century. Otherwise known as the Ranee of Sarawak, she was the wife of Sir Vyner Brooke, the last White Rajah, whose family had ruled the jungle kingdom of Sarawak on Borneo for three generations. They had their own flag, revenue, postage stamps, and money, as well as the power of life and death over their subjects—Malays, Chinese, and headhunting Dyak tribesmen. The regime of the White Rajahs was long romanticized, but by the 1930s, their power and prestige were crumbling. At the center of Sarawak's decadence was Sylvia, author of eleven books, mother to three daughters, an extravagantly dressed socialite whose behavior often offended and usually defied social convention. Sylvia did her best to manipulate the line of succession in favor of her daughters, but by 1946, Japan had invaded Sarawak, sending Sylvia and her husband into exile, ending one of the more unusual chapters of British colonial rule. Philip Eade's Sylvia, Queen of the Headhunters is a fascinating look at the wild and debauched world of a woman desperate to maintain the last remains of power in an exotic and dying kingdom.

Book Adventurous Women in South East Asia

Download or read book Adventurous Women in South East Asia written by J. M. Gullick and published by . This book was released on 1995 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sophia Raffles, Anna Leonowens, Harriette McDougal, Emily Innes, Isabella Bird, and Anna Forbes all came to South-East Asia as an encounter with an unknown world. It was an adventure in which they, and in some cases their children, were at risk of death by violence or disease, and they lived or travelled to remote places. In different ways they were all talented and observant. Each was a gifted writer who left a personal account of her experiences, what she saw, the people whom she met, and how they lived in parts of nineteenth century South-East Asia. The authors of the biographical essays in this volume have supplemented the personal remiscences of their subjects with information from other sources to provide original studies of six remarkable women throughout their lives, before, during, and after their time in South-East Asia.

Book Sources in British Political History 1900 1951

Download or read book Sources in British Political History 1900 1951 written by C. Cook and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-12-30 with total page 309 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From 1970 to 1977 a major project to uncover source material for students of contemporary British history and politics was undertaken at the British Library of Political and Economic Science. Fiananced by the Social Science Research Council, and under the direction of Dr Chris Cook, this project has attempted a unique and systematic operation to locate, and then to make readily available, those archives that provide the indispensable source material for the contemporary historian. This volume (the fifth in the series) provides a guide to the papers of propagandists who were influential in British public life. Included in this volume are the papers of such persons as newspaper editors, leading economists, social reformers, socialist thinkers, trade unionists, industrialists and a variety of theologians and philanthropists. In all, this volume not only completes the findings of the project but opens up the archive sources of a hitherto neglected area of research into contemporary social and political history.
