Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I was diagnosed with colon cancer when I was 43, in the summer of 2015. That's young for a cancer patient. The symptoms were weird and were not what is commonly associated with colon cancer. After major surgery in early 2016, the plan was to get me back on my feet within 6 months. Sadly, the common treatment method of chemotherapy did not work in my case. Turns out I have some genetic defects that lead to an aggressive form of uber nasty cancer, rendering most conventional treatment options useless. As a result, my hospital decided to turn me away, knowing they had no idea how to help me going forward. Seemingly left to die with no further treatment options, the power of the universe put me in touch with a crack team of doctors at Mount Sinai Hospital in Miami Beach. These people were not so easy to give up on me just yet. They suggested immunotherapy, the same treatment that miraculously cured Jimmy Carter. And it worked wonders! In only two months I went from a sleep deprived wreck, living with constant pain, unable to walk without a wheelchair or a stick, to cycling 10 miles a day. And all that without major side effects. If that's not a miracle then I don't know what is! BROKEN BOWELS is my personal account of these horrific yet truly amazing years I have endured. I've had countless chemotherapy and radiation treatments and survived terrible side effects. I've had 6 surgeries, I've had a colostomy for almost two years and an ileostomy for three months. I've lived without solid food for nearly a year, and for many months I've endured every type of catheter known to man, until I very nearly lost my whole bladder. My doctors call me a Super Survivor. supersurvivor.tv

Book From Broken Glass

  • Publisher : Hachette Books
  • Release : 2018-05-15
  • ISBN : 0316513083
  • Pages : 248 pages

Download or read book From Broken Glass written by Steve Ross and published by Hachette Books. This book was released on 2018-05-15 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the survivor of ten Nazi concentration camps who went on to create the New England Holocaust Memorial, a "devastating...inspirational" memoir (The Today Show) about finding strength in the face of despair. On August 14, 2017, two days after a white-supremacist activist rammed his car into a group of anti-Fascist protestors, killing one and injuring nineteen, the New England Holocaust Memorial was vandalized for the second time in as many months. At the base of one of its fifty-four-foot glass towers lay a pile of shards. For Steve Ross, the image called to mind Kristallnacht, the Night of Broken Glass in which German authorities ransacked Jewish-owned buildings with sledgehammers. Ross was eight years old when the Nazis invaded his Polish village, forcing his family to flee. He spent his next six years in a day-to-day struggle to survive the notorious camps in which he was imprisoned, Auschwitz-Birkenau and Dachau among them. When he was finally liberated, he no longer knew how old he was, he was literally starving to death, and everyone in his family except for his brother had been killed. Ross learned in his darkest experiences--by observing and enduring inconceivable cruelty as well as by receiving compassion from caring fellow prisoners--the human capacity to rise above even the bleakest circumstances. He decided to devote himself to underprivileged youth, aiming to ensure that despite the obstacles in their lives they would never experience suffering like he had. Over the course of a nearly forty-year career as a psychologist working in the Boston city schools, that was exactly what he did. At the end of his career, he spearheaded the creation of the New England Holocaust Memorial, a site millions of people including young students visit every year. Equal parts heartrending, brutal, and inspiring, From Broken Glass is the story of how one man survived the unimaginable and helped lead a new generation to forge a more compassionate world.

Download or read book The Broken Vase written by Phillip H. McMath and published by University of Arkansas Press. This book was released on 2010-09-01 with total page 317 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Award-winning novelist Phillip McMath has done something remarkable: he's written a vital roman a clef whose scope is both intimate and expansive. Here is the vivid, compelling, and true story of one woman's struggle to survive the Holocaust. Part memoir, part imagination, The Broken Vase is evidence of a masterful writer bringing together his allegiance to history and his talent for storytelling."---Andrea Hollander Budy, author of House Without a Dreamer, The Other Life, and Woman in the Painting. "This is a riveting account, told with great power and empathy, of a young girl ripped from her family and hounded across a continent by the agents of history's most monstrous project. It is also a witness to how individual courage and will can overcome a seemingly unconquerable fanaticism. Miriam Kellerman's unshakable refusal to surrender will inspire everyone whose freedom is at risk."---Judge Morris S. Arnold, author of Unequal Laws Unto a Savage Race, Colonial Arkansas, and The Rumble of a Distant Drum "Master storyteller Phillip McMath, building on research by Emily Lewis, presents in The Broken Vase a riveting, true story of brutality and survival. McMath's alchemy transforms these facts of a broken life and a broken world into an intimate account of chaos, love, despair, and one woman's hope."---Jo McDougall, author of Dirt, Satisfied with Havoc, and other poetry books Born to middle-class parents in July 1924 in Czernowitz, North Bukovina, Romania (now Chernivtsi, Ukraine), Miriam Kellerman grows up in an atmosphere of culture and privilege that is interrupted when her country is invaded---first by Stalin in July 1940, then by Hitler in June 1941. Fearing for their lives, Jews like her begin to flee into the Soviet Union to escape the German advance. Separated from her parents, Deborah and Max, and later from her fiance, Isaac, Miriam finds herself alone and on foot, trudging ever eastward. The Broken Vase is a compelling narrative of her incredible struggle to stay alive as World War II rages. A roman a clef ("novel with a key," or novel based on real life), The Broken Vase was written in close collaboration with Holocaust survivor Penina Krupitsky, who became the fictional Miriam Kellerman. This is a story of indomitable will and courage and a tribute to the resiliency of the human spirit. With the help of the World Jewish Organization, Krupitsky emigrated from the Soviet Union with her family to the United States. She now lives in Little Rock, Arkansas, with her husband, children, and grandchildren and remains active in Holocaust remembrance organizations around the world. Krupitsky says that she wants The Broken Vase "to help young people and become an inspiration to them. It will teach them how to build a world of love and not of hatred."

Download or read book Survive written by Peter DeLeo and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2005-01-12 with total page 263 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The man who accomplished one of the most remarkable feats of survival in history finally tells the story of the event that made worldwide news. This inspiring story shows what sheer determination can achieve against impossible odds. When Peter DeLeo set out one Sunday morning on a sightseeing and photography trip over the central Sierra Nevada mountains in California, he had no idea that he would soon be fighting for his life with the odds stacked very much against him. DeLeo’s single-engine plane encountered turbulence, and he and his two passengers crashed in the mountains. All three survived the accident but sustained multiple injuries. DeLeo had broken ribs, a shattered ankle, and a badly damaged shoulder. After assessing their situation, they decided that the passengers should remain with the plane while DeLeo would hike out to bring back help. It was already winter; he left the limited emergency supplies with the plane’s passengers; and he was hampered by his injuries, but DeLeo was determined to get help. He found or improvised shelter at night, carefully warmed himself during the daytime, drank from small pools of melted snow and ice, and slowly but steadily made his way toward civilization. Suffering from exhaustion and on the verge of collapse, he found a hot spring that provided him with temporary warmth and insects to eat. Injuries, dehydration, malnutrition, and a two-day blizzard slowed him, and a rockslide nearly killed him just as he glimpsed the valley and highway that he so desperately sought, but DeLeo’s courage saw him through. Meanwhile, Civil Air Patrol planes searched fruitlessly for the lost plane and for survivors; twice, DeLeo frantically tried to signal the search planes, but to no avail. When DeLeo finally reached a highway, he found it almost impossible to convince the authorities that he was the lost pilot who had been all but given up for dead. His astonishing survival, one of the most remarkable feats of endurance on record, made national and even international news. Now, for the first time, Peter DeLeo tells his remarkable story in gripping detail. His amazing saga is destined to become a classic.
