Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Law and Covenant: Being the Restoration of Two of the Books of Moses, Each in Two Version, and Designated Herein as the Siniatic Tora and the Book of the Covenant; According to Reconstructive Criticism The Law and the Covenant, is the same Which higher criticism relegates to its documents, known as the Book of the Covenant, the Words of the Covenant, the Book of Judgments, Which are found in Exodus; and the Laws of Holiness, which are found in Leviticus; and the Deu teronomic Code, Which is found in Deuteronomy. I leave it With every fair-minded reader to decide whether the three great Mosaic documents, Which I have restored and named the Tora of Moses, the Sinaitic Law, and the Book of the Covenant, giving each in two versions, are not rather to be accepted than the three documents supposed to be discovered by the higher critics and called by them the Prophetic Code, the Laws of Holi ness, and the Deuteronomic Code. The documents of reconstructive criticism are logical in arrangement, consistent as literary productions, and related to each other as an earlier to later codes, while the docu ments of higher criticism are Without any logical or der, inconsistent with each other, and as literary pro ductions must surely be classed as puerile productions because of the repetitions, inconsistencies, and incon gruous arrangements of their parts. Book A Practical Treatise on the Law of Covenants for Title Classic Reprint

This book was released on 2015-07-05 with total page 766 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Practical Treatise on the Law of Covenants for Title Since the publication of the last edition, the law upon the subject of this treatise has been much amplified by judicial decision, and important legislation has been enacted upon the subjects of implied covenants for title, the form of covenants, covenants by married women, covenants running with the land, and the operation of covenants by way of estoppel. The last subject has, in particular, been carefully reconsidered in the eleventh chapter, and it is believed that a more comprehensive view of the law is now presented. This growth of the subject has required the introduction of much new matter, but as the old has been condensed, the size of the volume is not increased. To his former pupil, Mr. Charles Chauncey Binney, as also in part to Mr. Frederick M. Leonard, the author is indebted for efficient aid in the preparation of this edition. The word seems to have been derived from a root, which, in one of its forms, signifies to choose out, and in another, to cut down, or strike through. The parties between whom, the objects for which, and the conditions upon which, a cove nant was wont to be made, were usually selected for that purpose. And when persons in ancient times, entered into a solemn covenant with one an other, they used on the occasion, to cut or strike a beast in two, and to pass between the pieces of it, in token of their wish, that God might so strike and cut asunder, the party who should break the cove nant. In allusion to this ancient rite, the making of a covenant is, in the Old Testament, often styled the cutting of it. As the word, which the Spirit of truth uses in the Old Testament, denotes in ge neral, an establishment, so does the word which he uses in the New. It signifies a disposition, or an establishment in the form of a testament, or a testa mentary covenant 0. Download or read book The Book of the Covenant written by Joe M. Sprinkle and published by A&C Black. This book was released on 1994-01-01 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume offers a synchronic, literary reading of the final form of the laws of Exodus 20.22-23.19 (commonly, though inaccurately labelled "The Book of the Covenant"), in contrast with primarily source- and form-critical approaches commonly utilized in the past. The work seeks to demonstrate that this literary unit is much more coherent, more integrated into its narrative context, less in need of the positing of corruptions, secondary insertions, rearrangements or the like than has usually been recognized. The approach instead seeks to find authorial purpose in each case where scholars have often posited scribal misadventure, "seams" between sources, disorder, contradiction, or corruption.

Download or read book Broken Covenant Fallen World written by Steven T. Poelman and published by Narrowpathway Books. This book was released on 2011-11-16 with total page 234 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Broken Covenant, Fallen World THE COVENANT OF WORKS The first of five volumes in the series, Covenants of the Almighty. The purpose of this series is to help ordinary Christians understand God's covenants at an easier reading level than most theology, the reading level of those who speak English as a second language. Collegiate language is minimal, colloquial idiosyncrasies are avoided, and illustrations can be universally understood. Difficult points are explained as simply as possible, sometimes from several approaches for readers who may not quickly grasp spiritual concepts. This series views the divine covenants through the lens of the New Testament, especially through the writings of the apostle Paul. The apostle's comments are taken as divinely inspired commentary explaining the true meaning of the text. Volume One examines the covenant God established with the first man in the Garden of Eden. For centuries this covenant has been described by theologians as a "covenant of works." The Covenant of Works is normally seen as a contrast to the Covenant of Grace that God established through Jesus Christ for man's salvation. Recent debates have questioned these distinctions. This book skips the debate, to avoid putting some readers on the defensive, while making a case for the validity and essential nature of the Covenant of Works. The first part of the book is a "Synopsis of Covenant Theology" for readers who want an overview of the covenants or need to understand how to bring together the details described in later chapters of the series. This is a survey of main points of the covenants within their historical context. The second part of this first volume explains the history, meaning and application of the Covenant of Works, and its importance for a correct understanding of Biblical concepts such as the covenant, the fall of man into sin, the final judgment, redemption, Christ's role as Mediator and Last Adam, and Edenic themes in the promises of the new covenant in Christ Jesus. Other books planned for the series, Covenants of the Almighty: Volume Two: Camp of the Saints. (Release date: July/August 2012) God's Covenant with Abraham promised justification by grace through faith for believers from all nations. A study of the basics of the Covenant of Grace within the Abrahamic Covenant. Important lessons for all pilgrims who walk in the steps of Abraham's faith today. Volume Three: The Lighthouse Kingdom (January 2013) God created the kingdom of Israel for His own glory, to reveal His righteousness to the nations, and to proclaim the future appearance of the Messiah who would bring salvation to all the earth and rule over all nations. Understand the old covenant through the illumination of the apostles, and sit at Moses' feet to ponder mysteries of the Messiah and the kingdom of heaven and gain insights valuable for citizens of heaven's kingdom. Volume Four: Dawn of Heaven's Light (Summer 2013) The way into the kingdom of heaven is opened only through the death and resurrection of the King of heaven. He came from heaven to establish His kingdom in the hearts of believers from every language, tribe, people and nation. After conquering the grave, Christ returned to heaven to serve His kingdom forever as King and High Priest of the new covenant. Volume Five: Heaven's Lamps in the Valley of Sorrows (Early 2014) The close relationship of the lines of covenant and eschatology throughout Biblical history until they come together and find their fulfillment in one man, Jesus Christ.

Book A Law Book for the Diaspora

Download or read book A Law Book for the Diaspora written by John Van Seters and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2002-11-21 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The foundation for all study of biblical law is the assumption that the Covenant Code is the oldest legal code in the Hebrew Bible and that all other laws are revisions of that code. This book sets forth the radical hypothesis that those laws in the covenant code that are similar to Deuteronomy and the Holiness Code are in fact later than both of these, and therefore can't be taken as the foundation of Hebrew Law.

Download or read book Progressive Covenantalism written by Stephen J. Wellum and published by B&H Publishing Group. This book was released on 2016-04-15 with total page 314 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Building on the foundation of Kingdom through Covenant (Crossway, 2012), Stephen J. Wellum and Brent E. Parker have assembled a team of scholars who offer a fresh perspective regarding the interrelationship between the biblical covenants. Each chapter seeks to demonstrate how the covenants serve as the backbone to the grand narrative of Scripture. For example, New Testament scholar Thomas Schreiner writes on the Sabbath command from the Old Testament and thinks through its applications to new covenant believers. Christopher Cowan wrestles with the warning passages of Scripture, texts which are often viewed by covenant theologians as evidence for a "mixed" view of the church. Jason DeRouchie provides a biblical theology of “seed” and demonstrates that the covenantal view is incorrect in some of its conclusions. Jason Meyer thinks through the role of law in both the old and new covenants. John Meade unpacks circumcision in the OT and how it is applied in the NT, providing further warrant to reject covenant theology's link of circumcision with (infant) baptism. Oren Martin tackles the issue of Israel and land over against a dispensational reading, and Richard Lucas offers an exegetical analysis of Romans 9-11, arguing that it does not require a dispensational understanding. From issues of ecclesiology to the warning passages in Hebrews, this book carefully navigates a mediating path between the dominant theological systems of covenant theology and dispensationalism to offer the reader a better way to understand God’s one plan of redemption.

Book History of the Old Covenant Vol 1 Classic Reprint

Download or read book History of the Old Covenant Vol 1 Classic Reprint written by Johann Heinrich Kurtz and published by . This book was released on 2015-06-29 with total page 544 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of the Old Covenant, Vol. 1 It is not only with the feelings common and natural in a Translator towards the original, or a writer towards his authorities, that we introduce this volume to the theological readers of Great Britain and America. A repeated perusal of its contents has convinced us that, it is one of the best contributions towards the explanation of the Old Testament with which Germany has enriched our common theological literature. Comprehensive and trustworthy in its information, exhaustive in point of research and learning, fresh and vigorous in thought and style, throughout marked by sobriety and good sense; above all, thoroughly evangelical in its tone, it may safely be recommended as a text-book to the student. Even where we differ from our Author - as on some points, we frankly confess, is the case - his views deserve and require careful examination. In our days and circumstances a thorough and believing investigation into the claims and the teaching of the Word of God is more than ever necessary. Such studies will be materially aided by the fresh light which Dr Kurtz has been able to shed upon an important part of the Bible. It may be proper to add that the translation has been made from the second German edition (1853), and that the notes added by us have been rendered necessary by the progress of Biblical investigation since the date of its appearance. They bear chiefly on the literature of the subject, and have been supplied in view of the minimum necessary, not of the maximum desirable.
