Book The British South Africa Police in the Great War

Download or read book The British South Africa Police in the Great War written by John Berry and published by Tsl Publications/Gwaa. This book was released on 2020-05-21 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many books have been written about the First World War campaign in German East Africa, sometimes called the Forgotten War as it was overshadowed by the battles of the Western Front. The British South Africa Police of Southern Rhodesia had a relatively minor role numerically in the overall scale of this campaign, but it played an important part in the continuous pursuit of the German forces over a large portion of the territory which later became Tanganyika and then Tanzania. Previously unpublished, the photographs of Sergeant FG Elliot and the Diary of BSAP Service Company Private WHJ Walker paint a vivid picture of the day to day life of the men.

This book was released on 2022-06-17 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a compilation of memoirs and articles about the British South Africa Police involvement in military operations outside Southern Rhodesia during World Wars 1 & 2. most have appeared before in various magazines many years ago, but these earlier and fragmented publications are now difficult for the ordinary reader to access and so are re-published here in one easy to read book. Part One covers World War 1 and consists of various memoirs written by men who took part in the events, with connecting and explanatory text. There is thus some duplication but it is interesting to read how different writers had different interpretations oi events. The obituaries of leading figures and Nominal and Medal rolls are included. Part Two covers World War 2. There were much less actual military operations as the BSAP was no longer the de facto army of Southern n Rhodesia. However, some 138 members of the BSAP wer seconded to various units in North Africa, the Dodecanese, Iraq and Burma, where they served with distinction. Many write articles about their experiences and these are reproduced here. After their return many rose to high rank in the Force. A nominal roll is included.

Book excerpt: A sound and stirring history of the mounted forces recruited during the 'scramble for Africa' of the late 19th century to help guard Britain's huge imperial possessions in South Africa and Rhodesia. The British South Africa Police had a vast territory to patrol, and Colonel Harding, the author of this history, took part in its campaigns against risings by Rhodesia's two major tribes - the Mashona and the Matabele - along with the Jameson Raid, the famous precursor to the Boer War, and the Boer War itself. During the Great War the unit took part in campaigns against German South West Africa ( modern Namibia) and the long and gruelling fight against the German forces of that guerilla genius, Colonel Paul Von Lettow-Vorbeck in East Africa. This history contains an index, roll of Honour, and Honours and Awards for all ranks of the unit during the Great War.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Wilfred Bussy was the Editor of the Police Review who and published a series of articles covering the early history of the BSAP. The fact they were written soon after the events described, by a serving member, adds an immediacy which is of value. Starting in 1886 Bussy describes the various units which, after many campaigns, eventually evolved to form the British South Africa Police. The events of the Matabe and Mashona uprisings are covered in detail as also is that other great active service period of the BSAP in early years, the Anglo-Boer War. Written in a highly readable style, this is a valuable contribution to the history of the BSAP.

Download or read book The Regiment written by Richard Hamley and published by . This book was released on 2000 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While it is generally accepted that the history of Rhodesia began in 1890, the history of that country's police force began a year earlier, in 1889. From the beginning, the Force held to the customs and traditions of a light cavalry regiment, with military ranks and disciplines and, reflecting the military ethos, laying emphasis upon a smartness of turnout and drill. The unique character of the Force developed from this time. Not only did it have to establish the rule of law, it also had to defend the borders of the country, a responsibility it held until 1953. This stunning volume, filled with the author's own vivid water color illustrations, traces the fascinating story of the British South Africa Police during its 90 year existence from 1890 to 1980.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From its formation in 1889 the British South Africa Police participated in many campaigns, including service with distinction in the Anglo-Boer War, but during the period 1915-1918 it was to take part in a longer and more challenging campaign than any that had gone before. On the outbreak of World War I it was decided that the German colonies in Africa had to be conquered. German East Africa (later Tanganyika) was one of them. When the north-eastern border areas of Northern Rhodesia were threatened by the Germans various units were raised to defend them and to also carry the battle to the enemy. One of these was the Service Company of the British South Africa Police which was sent to the border in 1915. It became famously known as 'Murray's Column' after its commanding officer, Lieutenant Colonel R.E. Murray, D.S.O. and bar, D.C.M. These days the German East Africa campaign is relatively little known compared to the Western Front. For that reason this account by the well-known Rhodesian author and historian 'Tony' Tanser is an important and detailed record of an epic period in the B.S.A.P.'s history. It has not been previously published and, since the author's death in 1976, it has remained in manuscript form in Harare. In his thorough and exhaustive research for this book, Tony Tanser not only had access to the records of the National Archives of Rhodesia, but also the private papers, diaries and letters of participants in the campaign and personal interviews with survivors. He paints a vivid picture of battles, forced marches along bush tracks, through swamps and rivers, over mountains and high plateaux, on short and sometimes no rations. In the course of a single day the lightly-clad troops could experience cold and rain in the morning and hot, steamy, disease-ridden river valleys in the evening, while all the time having to be on the alert for a highly-trained well-equipped enemy led by a brilliant and ruthless leader General von Lettow-Vorbeck. He was never defeated in the field and only surrendered two days after the Armistice was signed in Europe. Contains 10 maps and 29 photographs

Book excerpt: Peter Gibbs was born in London in 1903, educated at Aldenham, and lived in Bulawayo since 1936. A number of his books have been published in London and New York. He served in the BSA Police Reserve for 21 years, retiring with the rank of reserve superintendent. He was awarded the MBE in 1964. He is deceased. Hugh Phillips was born in the UK and immigrated to Southern Rhodesia in 1951 to join the BSAP. He attained the rank of assistant commissioner prior to his retirement after nearly 30 years' service. Prior to returning to the UK in 2002, he was involved, without success, in liaison activities between the Commercial Farmers Union and Zimbabwean government in efforts to bring a more pragmatic outlook and policy towards the white farm invasions. Hugh wrote Part 3 of this history, covering the period from 1939 to 1980. Nick Russell joined the BSAP as a cadet in 1975 and served at Sinoia and Kariba before attending Morris Depot where he formed part of the mounted squad for the opening of parliament. After graduation he was posted to uniform-branch duties at Mount Darwin and substations in the district. He transferred to Special Branch and spent two years, mostly in the Mt Darwin area, until the cessation of hostilities. He now lives in Australia. The BSAP held the honour of occupying the Right of the Line--one of the greatest police forces of the British Empire and Commonwealth In 1889 Cecil John Rhodes was granted a royal charter by Queen Victoria to settle Mashonaland, in what was to become Southern Rhodesia. So was formed the British South Africa Company; its regiment of troopers raised to protect the occupying Pioneer Column dubbed the British South Africa Police, the BSAP. From the 1893 Matabele War, the 1896 Mashona Rebellion and the Jameson Raid, the Anglo-Boer War, through both world wars and finally to the bitter Rhodesian bush war of the 1960s and '70s, troopers and officers of this fine regiment of policemen, both black and white, were proudly to the fore, in civilian and military roles ... until the disbandment of the Force in 1980 when the country became the independent Zimbabwe.

Book Personalities and Institutions of the British South Africa Police

Download or read book Personalities and Institutions of the British South Africa Police written by John Berry and published by Gwaa / Tsl Publications. This book was released on 2021-05-21 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over nearly seven decades the chronicles and happenings of the British South Africa Police, together with the experiences of ordinary members of the Force, have been recorded in the Police magazines. First there was The Police Review, founded in 1911, then the Rhodesian Defence Force Journal during and after the Great War years, then, in 1923, The Outpost for the remainder of the Force's existence. Several books have been published over the years reproducing articles from the magazines. This is another such one. In addition to articles from the magazines of the early days of the Force there are also some memoirs not previously published which will be of particular interest to those who served during the Rhodesian Bush War of the 1970s. These give an insight into what was happening behind the scenes. The Regimental Association of the British South Africa Police is a flourishing institution with Branches and members all over the world. Those who would like to know how it all began will find it here. Other institutions, such as the Forensic Science Laboratory and even the origins of the magazines themselves also find a place here. The Regimental Sergeant Majors played an important role in setting the tone of the Force and stories of three of them are recounted. The articles and memoirs cover a wide spectrum both in content and time and the reader should find much of interest.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the story of one man's service in the British South Africa Police of Rhodesia during his service of nearly fifteen years, between the years 1965 and 1979, and in many ways forms a sequel to the author's book Mad Dog Killers. The struggle to keep Rhodesia out of black nationalist hands started in late 1964 and ended with the Mugabe regime in 1982. It is also a story of a policeman engaged in that war as a member of the paramilitary BSAP Support unit, the Police Anti-Terrorist Unit and as an ordinary member of the force that had always been designated the country's first line of defense. Most of the service was on remote rural district stations, often in the middle of the "front line". The account tells of one man's learning to be a policeman and a police public prosecutor and about the eccentricities of some of the circuit magistrates. A policeman has a lot to learn about life, and in the BSA Police he was expected to jump in at the deep end from the start. It is also the story of the strange struggle by Rhodesian-born policemen in a force where the majority were English-born, at a time when Rhodesia was in rebellion against Britain. The author's senior officers, though fiercely loyal to the force, were British and required to join the rebellion. It tells of his resentment at the lack of drive by senior officers in the fight against terrorist atrocities. There is additional insight into the Utopian life in Rhodesia, especially in rural areas, when it was still possible to hunt buck for the police mess rations, where there was no electricity or other modern amenities and where the single quarters were in ancient buildings enclosed by a wraparound gauzed-in veranda - a life gone now forever. It is also a story of a young man who grew up in Salisbury, his sexual excesses and sadness. The British Queen Mother was patron of the force all her life and was very proud of her association with it.

Book Multilingual Environments in the Great War

Download or read book Multilingual Environments in the Great War written by Julian Walker and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2021-03-25 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the differing ways in which language has been used to try to make sense of the First World War. Offering further developments in an innovative approach to the study of the conflict, it develops a transnational viewpoint of the experience of war to reveal less expected areas of language use during the conflict. Taking the study of the First World War far beyond the Western Front, chapters examine experiences in many regions, including Africa, Armenia, post-war Australia, Russia and Estonia, and a variety of contexts, from prisoner-of-war and internment camps, to food queues and post-war barracks. Drawing upon a wide variety of languages, such as Esperanto, Flemish, Italian, Kiswahili, Portuguese, Romanian and Turkish, Multilingual Environments in the Great War brings together language experiences of conflict from both combatants and the home front, connecting language and literature with linguistic analysis of the immediacy of communication.
