Book The British Communist Party and the Trade Unions 1933 1945

Download or read book The British Communist Party and the Trade Unions 1933 1945 written by Nina Fishman and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-02-27 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a pathbreaking book, essential reading for students of interwar political and social history. Previous histories of the period have underestimated the crucial role which Communists played in trade union organisation from top to bottom. Despite its relatively small size the Communist Party occupied a strategic place in the trade union movement: the leaders of the movement, notably Ernest Bevin, refused to acknowledge this at the time. Thanks to her extensive research and numerous interviews, and to the ’opening of the books’ of the Communist Part, Nina Fishman has been able to uncover a fascinating story, one which official Communist historians have never told, and which other historians could only recount in fragments. The main protagonists are the Communist Party General Seretary, Harry Pollitt, and the Editor of the Daily Worker, Johnny Campbell. The book brings to vivid life the work of activists on the shop floor and in the coalmines during the Depression and the Second World War. The book includes the first comprehensive analysis of Communist activity in key sectors of the British economy, notably in engineering shop stewards’ movements and among London busmen. It concludes with an authoritative review of Communists' part in the British war economy and a vigorous challenge to the conventional wisdom about the effect of Communist Party changes of line on the war on activists’ abilities to incite and lead strikes.

Book The United Front

Download or read book The United Front written by Daniel F. Calhoun and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2008-11-06 with total page 468 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book concerns the Soviet effort during the 1920s to make contact with - and if possible revolutionize - the European labour movement, by first establishing a special relationship with the British Trades Union Congress. The ultimate failure of that effort, after the collapse of the general strike in 1926, inspired Trotsky to try one last time to oust Stalin, a confrontation that led to utter collapse of the Trotskyite opposition in 1927-28. The author suggests the failure of this particular 'united front' effort was a major factor in the sectarianism and isolationism of the Communist movement from 1928 to 1934, and thus had a significant affect on the rise of the Nazi party in Germany.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the a brief period between the end of the Second World War and the election of Harold Wilson's Labour government in 1964, when the Conservative Party adopted a remarkably constructive and conciliatory approach to the trade unions, dubbed 'voluntarism'. During this time the party leadership made strenuous efforts to avoid, as far as was politically possible, confrontation with, or legislation against, the trade unions, even when this incurred the wrath of some Conservative backbenchers and the Party's mass membership. Making extensive use of primary and archival sources it explains why the 1945-64 period was unique in the Conservative Party's relations with the unions, and why, after 1964, things returned to a 'business as usual' confrontational approach.

Book The Communist Party and the War

Download or read book The Communist Party and the War written by Great Britain Labour Party and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-10-09 with total page 28 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Communist Party and the War: A Record of Hypocrisy and Treachery to the Workers of Europe The Communists are again trying to get into the Labour Party. They have made another application for affiliation. They are conducting a well-organised and energetic campaign in all parts of the country to win the support of the National Trade Unions, Trade Union branches and Divisional and Local Labour Parties, as well as individual members of the Labour Party. Press articles and press correspondence, platform speeches, and a vast amount of literature are pouring out. The Communists are cynics and opportunists. They know they have an awkward and embarrassing record. They know it will prove ex tremely inconvenient and injurious to them if it is brought up. They believe that if their misdeeds, which are many and flagrant, can be kept hushed up, they will be able to ride into the Labour Party on the flood of world-wide admiration for the heroic achievements of the peoples and armies of the They think that a situation now exists in which it can be made to appear that refusal to affiliate them will be an insult and an offence to our Soviet Allies. It is a promising tactic - cynical, opportunist and dishonest, it is true but the Communists think it might do the trick. So they say, let's forget the past. Don't bring up old out-worn arguments or inconvenient hard facts. Let the dead past bury its dead. We want to affiliate to the Labour Party to strengthen unity for victory over Fascism and for social advance now and after the war.
