Book excerpt: Excerpt from The British Coal Industry Knowing as I do most of the leaders on both the coal owners' and the miners' side, and entertaining for them the highest regard, it is to me Very regrettable to have perpetually to refer to the shortcomings of the industry. This, however, seems to be unavoidable when we have to deal with an industry which is at present the battling ground for a great and fundamental change. To quote a particular instance we have seen this industry held up to public criticism on account of the housing of its workers. Deplorable conditions have been shown to exist in some cases. This has earned the industry a bad name in many quarters. Yet, if we look at the matter fairly, should We not say that this is an evil no more peculiar to the coal industry than to any other? Have we not our slums That such things should be is indefensible and every effort is being made to-day to abolish this last remnant of a by-gone age, but they show that the coal owners are in no worse case than the generality of those responsible for the housing of the working classes. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Coal Trade, 1920, Vol. 47: The Year Book of the Coal and Coke Industry The present volume of the coal trade marks the forty-seventh annual edition of this work, which has come to be recognized as the Blue Book of the Coal and Coke Industry. In line with the advances that have been made in the fuel business since the modest initial volume appeared, it is only natural that the present edition should be the largest in size and the widest in scope yet published. In the compilation of the material incorporated in the pages that follow, two purposes have been kept in view: first, to bring down to the latest available dates the various statistical tables that give a publication of this nature its value for comparative purposes over a series of years; second, to incorporate in it new matter that would make the edition truly representative of the develop ments peculiar to the past coal and calendar years and consonant with the widen ing interest in coal topics here and abroad. Excerpt: ... cases of the owners selling the pit rather than face the loss of a prolonged strike. The buyers have either had to make profit possible by expensive improvements of machinery, or to face a long strike in reducing the price list. Presumably they will have taken into account the possibility of much expense in reducing the price list when valuing the colliery for purchase. It is indeed becoming moi-e and more difficult to effect any change at all in price lists once established; and it is also becoming more difficult to fix a price list in the first instance. An interesting case is that of the Gelli pit belonging to Messrs. Cory Brothers, in South Wales. The pit was a comparatively new one which Messrs. Cory Brothers had taken over and wished to open. The price list they offered proved unacceptable to the men, who went out on strike in October, 1910. After some months the executive of the South Wales Miners' Federation took control of the case, and they furnished the strike pay. In spite of various attempts and negotiations, neither side has seen its way to offer sufficient for the parties to meet and make a bargain, with the result that the pit has remained closed for more than three years, and there is still no prospect of its being opened. The men on strike gradually drifted away to find employment in other pits, and in September, 1913, the Miners' Federation ceased payment of strike pay. The result is that the pit is practically of no commercial value, because no member of the South Wales Miners' Federation can be got to work there; and as this includes practically all the experienced men, the company has no prospect of opening the pit at the price list it offers.1 The negotiation of a price list is indeed a most dramatic event in the...

Book Coal in International Trade Classic Reprint

Download or read book Coal in International Trade Classic Reprint written by Arthur John Sargent and published by . This book was released on 2015-06-30 with total page 82 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Coal in International Trade This little book is not a scientific treatise; its purpose is to provide matter for thought, to suggest problems rather than solutions. It is an attempt to place side by side certain groups of facts which are intimately related but not easy to study in their widely scattered sources. The method involves the comparison of things not strictly comparable and the use of figures subject to large initial errors in addition to the errors inevitable in handling and reproduction. A rigid statistician may take refuge in economic agnosticism; he may argue that nothing of real value can result from material so imperfect; such material, however, is sometimes better than none. The world will not await ideal statistics either for argument or for action; and where evidence is cumulative, a very considerable correction for error may leave the essentials of the picture untouched. In the sphere of commerce, even an approximate estimate of the factors entering into competitive price is not without value, though their exact determination may require minute investigation by the expert.
