Book excerpt: Great Britain does not negotiate with terrorists. Shock waves are felt throughout the world when members of the IRA hijack the royal yacht Britannia with Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip on board, demanding the removal of British troops from Northern Ireland within seven days. With the support of a Middle Eastern terrorist group and a British traitor, the hijackers stand off against British and American naval forces, while the British government agonises over the choice before them. Time is running out fast, and tensions in Belfast, in the British government and among the hijackers quickly reach their limit. As the pressure mounts, British and American special forces come together to pull off a spectacular rescue attempt that has only one chance to succeed.

Book Labour Law Fundamental Rights and Social Europe

Download or read book Labour Law Fundamental Rights and Social Europe written by Mia Rönnmar and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2011-09-06 with total page 310 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume, comprising three parts and ten chapters, all of them peer-reviewed essays, arises from the work of the Swedish Network for European Legal Studies. Its focus is on labour and social security law. The chapters, written by distinguished legal researchers associated with Swedish universities, provide insight into a range of topical and important developments, seeking new and interesting perspectives. Sweden has been a member of the European Union since 1995, and EU law and European law perspectives have been well integrated into Swedish labour law and social security law research. Within the European Social Model and the European Welfare State, Sweden (and to some degree the other Nordic countries as well) can be said to represent a specific system, as regards both labour law and industrial relations and social security law. In terms of influential comparative typologies or models (naturally 'flawed' by a certain element of vagueness and simplification, but also very helpful in analytical and pedagogical respects), Sweden has been described as a representative of, inter alia, a Nordic legal family, a Nordic labour law model, a social-collectivist industrial relations system, a consensual industrial relations system, a social-democratic welfare state regime, a Scandinavian social security law system (a 'sub-group' of the Beveridge system), and a coordinated market economy. But since 1995 EU law and European law perspectives have been extensively integrated into existing Swedish labour and social security law, and the chapters in this book go a long way in illustrating the far-reaching and multifaceted ways in which Swedish law has been 'Europeanised'.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Trafalgar Chronicle is the publication of choice for new research about the Georgian Navy, sometimes called ‘Nelson’s Navy’, though its scope includes all the sailing navies of the period from 1714 to 1837. The theme of the 2021 issue is ‘Georgian Navy encounters with indigenous and enslaved populations’. The theme is particularly relevant to current-day discussions and social activism occurring across the globe, that have brought new insights and perspectives to Western history of colonization, exploration, and slavery. The lead article, by 1805 Club member Tom D. Fremantle, tells the story of his ancestor, Philip Gidley King, who sailed to Botany Bay with the First Fleet in 1787. becoming the first Lieutenant Governor of Norfolk Island and the third Governor of New South Wales. His encounters with the Maoris are unforgettably touching. Another contribution reveals how the British lured slaves away from their American masters’ plantations with the promise of freedom during the War of 1812. In the tradition of recent editions, the 2021 Trafalgar Chronicle contains biographical sketches of Nelson’s contemporaries including Vice-Admiral Sir Charles Saunders, naval hero of Quebec; Sir Harry Neale, Baronet GCB, a royal favorite; and Admiral Sir Philip Durham, a Trafalgar Captain turned politician. Meanwhile, Captain Christer Hägg, RSwN Rtd regales readers with the tale of Captain Johan Puke leading the Swedish fleet in a daring breakout from the Russian blockade at Viborg in 1790. Scholars and students, experts and enthusiasts fascinated by the era of the sailing navy will be absorbed by the latest edition of this handsomely illustrated journal.

Book Breaking Into Heaven The Rise Fall Resurrection of The Stone Roses

Download or read book Breaking Into Heaven The Rise Fall Resurrection of The Stone Roses written by Mick Middles and published by Omnibus Press. This book was released on 2012-07-23 with total page 362 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1989, The Stone Roses exploded onto the music scene at the forefront of a new wave of music from Manchester. The Roses’ music – an exhilarating mixture of sixties’ pop, rock and dance – made them the UK’s most talked-about group, while their first album, The Stone Roses, is now revered as one of the finest débuts of all time. The band’s flared trousers, baggy t-shirts and floppy fringes were copied by a generation, and their 1990 gig at Spike Island in front of 30,000 people became legendary. Then, with the world at their feet, and a multi-million-dollar record contract signed, the Stone Roses disappeared only to come back 15 years later even bigger and better. Their story truly is one of resurrection.
