Book The Bristol Riots

Download or read book The Bristol Riots written by John Eagles and published by . This book was released on 2016-06-22 with total page 414 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Bristol Riots: Their Causes, Progress, and Consequences Accounts of the Bristol Riots have already appeared; but they have been considered either defective in information or delusive in their spirit - as written too near the events, or to serve purposes of local feeling. But the Bristol Riots perhaps less belong to local than to general history; and, even among the records of these important and stirring times, mil be viewed and referred to with a deep interest. The writer of the following pages, therefore, is aware that he is treating a subject of great moment; that his Narrative can only acquire a value from its truth; and he has strenuously endeavoured that his statements, whatever may be his arguments and conclusions, shall be correct. He makes no apology for occasionally adopting, in their very language, such authentic documents as have already been published. Nor can he withhold the expression of his admiration for at least one account, that taken from the "Job Nott" paper, under the signature of Nehemiah, which, had it been somewhat more extensive, would have left no task to be performed. Book excerpt: This book is the first on the creation, development and influence of popular politics, specifically the role of Political Unions, on the Great Reform Act of 1832. Political Unions and the force of public opinion played a vital role in seeing the Reform Bill through Parliament and setting England on the path of peaceful, legislative reform. Their emphasis on representing the 'industrious' classes linked the Unions to the emerging debates - political and socio-economic - in later Victorian Britain and the evolution of British participatory democracy.

Book Rethinking the Age of Reform

    Book Details:
  • Author : Arthur Burns
  • Publisher : Cambridge University Press
  • Release : 2003-11-13
  • ISBN : 0521823943
  • Pages : 365 pages

Download or read book Rethinking the Age of Reform written by Arthur Burns and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2003-11-13 with total page 365 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book takes a look at the 'age of reform', from 1780 when reform became a common object of aspiration, to the 1830s - the era of the 'Reform Ministry' and of the Great Reform Act of 1832 - and beyond, when such aspirations were realized more frequently. It pays close attention to what contemporaries termed 'reform', identifying two strands, institutional and moral, which interacted in complex ways. Particular reforming initiatives singled out for attention include those targeting parliament, government, the law, the Church, medicine, slavery, regimens of self-care, opera, theatre, and art institutions, while later chapters situate British reform in its imperial and European contexts. An extended introduction provides a point of entry to the history and historiography of the period. The book will therefore stimulate fresh thinking about this formative period of British history.

Book The Bront s and War

Download or read book The Bront s and War written by Emma Butcher and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2019-12-03 with total page 221 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the representations of militarisim and masculinity in Charlotte and Branwell Brontë’s youthful writings. It offers insight into how the siblings understood and reimagined conflict (both local and overseas) and its emotional legacies whilst growing up in early-nineteenth-century Britain. Their writings shed new light on a period little discussed by social and military historians, providing not only a new approach to Brontë Studies, but also acting as a familial case study for how the media captivated and enticed the public imagination.
