Book excerpt: “McCaffrey's world of the Talented is as vivid as that of Pern and its dragons.”—Publishers Weekly When a freak accident furnishes solid scientific proof of paranormal mental abilities, the world reacts with suspicion and fear. How can ordinary people coexist with a minority able to read minds, heal with a touch, peer into the future, or move objects with a thought? How can anyone with such power be trusted not to abuse it? Harsh repression seems the only answer Gifted with precognitive talent, Henry Darrow has other ideas, foreseeing a future in which the Talents are accepted for what they are and not what they can offer their fellow humans. But the road to that future will not be easy. Darrow and the powerful telepath Daffyd op Owen must win the public's trust while overcoming the threat of rogue Talents like Solange Boshe, a young girl so consumed with hatred that her thoughts can kill, and the singer known as Amalda, whose telepathic prowess can unite a thousand strangers in joyful harmony—or mold them into a bloodthirsty mob. . . .

Book The Bridling of Pegasus

Download or read book The Bridling of Pegasus written by Alfred Austin and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-11 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Bridling of Pegasus: Prose Papers on Poetry My Dear Lyall, I should think you must have observed, in the course of your reading, that even in the most accredited organs of opinion, principles of literary criticism, either explicitly stated or tacitly assumed, are often utterly ignored, in the notice of some work or other in the self-same number. The result can only be to create confusion in the public mind. In this volume, consisting of papers written at various times during the last thirty years, no such contradiction will, I think, be found. Whether they be deemed sound or otherwise, they are at least coherent; the canons of criticism underlying them being that no verse which is unmusical or obscure can be regarded as Poetry, whatever other qualities it may possess; that Imagination in Poetry, as distinguished from mere Fancy, is the transfiguring of the Real, or actual, into the Ideal, by what Prospero calls his "so potent art"; and, if these conditions are complied with, that the greatness of the poem depends on the greatness of the theme. To no one so much as to you am I indebted for criticism of the frankest kind. That alone would lead me to ask you to accept the dedication of these pages. But I find a yet further and stronger impulse to do so, in the long and uninterrupted friendship that has subsisted between us, and to which I attach so much value. Book excerpt: Will appears to have it all: a successful company, money, three homes, a beautiful wife and two kids with another on the way. But his comfortable life comes crashing down around him as his marriage collapses under the emotional weight of a neonatal death. Kicked out of the family home and left to his own devices in London, he slips into the salacious lifestyle of the wealthy Chelsea singleton looking for something more than simple companionship. Things get complicated when he meets Nazli, who is more than his equal in every way. At the same time, his wife is meting out her revenge in a bitter settlement and his company is struggling with new commercial challenges brought on by his impending divorce. Is this Will's 'Road to Damascus' moment, or will he simply submit to his own hedonistic tendencies? After all, what else does he have to lose? Love, loss, lust and betrayal - a toxic blend of emotions he will have to manage in this strange new world of half-truths and duplicity, where friendships are illusory and trust is such a precious commodity.
