Book The Brick System of Romanesque Architecture

Download or read book The Brick System of Romanesque Architecture written by C. Edson Armi and published by L'Erma Di Bretschneider. This book was released on 2017 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "At the beginning of the eleventh century in northwestern Italy builders created a comprehensive system of architecture, integrating the square edges of stacked bricks on the exterior with arches, vaults, and niches inside the wall. Throughout southern Europe builders copied this system. In major abbeys in Catalonia builders carefully followed and also imaginatively enriched it, creating a new type of interior, different from the early Christian model perpetuated in the central vessel of contemporary Italian churches. In major churches in southern France successive generations incorporated many of these changes to the brick-based model and added significantly to them. Seen in this new light, early eleventh-century architecture in Lombardy and Catalonia belies its longstanding reputation as a superficially decorated, pendulously massive, unprogressively folkloric, and largely irrelevant First Romanesque prelude to High Romanesque architecture"--Page 4 of cover.

Book Medieval Irish Architecture and the Concept of Romanesque

Download or read book Medieval Irish Architecture and the Concept of Romanesque written by Tadhg O’Keeffe and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2024-02-28 with total page 279 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents a fresh perspective on eleventh- and twelfth-century Irish architecture, and a critical assessment of the value of describing it, and indeed contemporary European architecture in general, as “Romanesque”. Medieval Irish Architecture and the Concept of Romanesque is a new and original study of medieval architectural culture in Ireland. The book’s central premise is that the concept of a “Romanesque” style in eleventh- and twelfth-century architecture across Western Europe, including Ireland, is problematic, and that the analysis of building traditions of that period is not well served by the assumption that there was a common style. Detailed discussion of important buildings in Ireland, a place marginalised within the “Romanesque” model, reveals the Irish evidence to be intrinsically interesting to students of medieval European architecture, for it is evidence which illuminates how architectural traditions of the Middle Ages were shaped by balancing native and imported needs and aesthetics, often without reference to Romanitas. This book is for specialists and students in the fields of Romanesque, medieval archaeology, medieval architectural history, and medieval Irish studies.

Book Carolingian and Romanesque Architecture 800 to 1200

Download or read book Carolingian and Romanesque Architecture 800 to 1200 written by Kenneth John Conant and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 1993-01-01 with total page 528 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Professor Conant's detailed studies of Santiago de Compostela and of the abbey church at Cluny fit him for this account of building in the period of the round arch which preceeded Gothic. In this volume he shows how, at the instigation of the monasteries during the little renaissance of Charlemagne, Roman methods of construction were revived and fused with local traditions to produce a distinctive Carolingian manner; and how such monuments as the Palatine Chapel at Aachen already contained hints of the nobler and more mature Romanesque style which was to become international. professor Conant extends his survey to cover the regions of medieval France, Spain, Portugal, the Holy Land, Italy, Germany, Northern Europe, and Britain.

Book Structural Design in Building Conservation

Download or read book Structural Design in Building Conservation written by Dimitris Theodossopoulos and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2012-07-26 with total page 282 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: No building is properly conserved if it is not structurally sound. Consequently architects, engineers and conservation officers need an adequate grounding in the technology, the materials and the historic origins of the building in order to complete a conservation project successfully. Structural Design in Building Conservation deals with design issues and technical choices, showing how they are integrated with the planning and architectural outcomes in a conservation project. It brings together theory with current conservation technology, discussing the possibilities of structural details and strategies in architectural expression. Case studies are central to this, and these are organised around such themes as the addition of roofs, requalification of space, strengthening and re-use of fabric, repristination, additions, completions, stiffness adjustments, and the correction of past mistakes. The reader is encouraged to examine the technical details of these real projects, and explore the possible solutions. The philosophy of structural interventions is introduced in the context of conservation theories and practices in various European countries. The main types of strengthening, repairs and interventions are explained using different building types, and the structural nature of the main elements to be strengthened (linear structures, frames, plates and shells) is explored in detail. Case studies included cover a very wide range of historic types and conversions, not only monumental masonry structures like neoclassical buildings, major temples, churches, public buildings and museums, but also more utilitarian structures like historic mills, early reinforced concrete structures and vaulting types. This is essential reading for all students of architectural conservation, and practicing architects and engineers who are involved in conservation projects.
