Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Animal Breeding Breeding a Science and an Art - Animal breed ing is at once a science and an art. It is a science in so far as it discovers and systematically arranges the truths and principles which relate to the improve ment of live stock. The value of in-and - in breeding, for instance, as a quick means of improvement illus trates such discovery. (see Chapter X.) It does not appear to have been known to the ancients. If it were thus known the knowledge was subsequently lost. The systematic arrangement of the truths and principles which relate to the science is yet far from complete, and it may be added, that many of these truths and principles are not yet understood. It is an art in so far as it successfully uses those principles in effecting improvement. The importance, there fore, of understanding the principles which make improvement possible will be at once apparent, since, until so understood, they cannot be turned to profit able account. Book Breeding Plants and Animals Classic Reprint

Download or read book Breeding Plants and Animals Classic Reprint written by W. M. Hays and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-06 with total page 206 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Breeding Plants and Animals The Farm Students' Review in publishing in book form these papers by Prof. Willet M. Hays, now Assistant Secretary of the United States Department of Agriculture, believes it is doing a public service, as well as undertaking a profitable enterprise for itself. These articles published in discontinuous parts covering two years in a weekly periodical, have not had a fair presentation even to the readers of the Breeders Gazette. While they were not designed to be brought together in a book, but rather became a part of a rapidly developing subject currently discussed in the periodical mentioned, they give in an emphatic way many of the theories of the author. The body of knowledge he gathered - after commencing investigations in animal breeding, but using many plants for theoretical experiments, for demonstrating that the science of breeding can be developed, and for the addition to wealth of the State and Nation - is here better ex-than in any of his earlier publications. It is believed by the Farm Students Review that breeders of animals, breeders of plants, scientists who are studying related problems, and students in agricultural schools will appreciate these papers in book form. The price has been placed low for a book of this size and character. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book The Breeding of Fur Animals Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Breeding of Fur Animals Classic Reprint written by Frank Getz Ashbrook and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-29 with total page 24 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Breeding of Fur Animals The usefulness Of breeding data 111 this situation may be illustrated by the case of the marten (fig. At its experiment station near Saratoga Springs, N. Y., established in 1923, the Bureau has been studying the breeding and the gestation period of the marten. As a result it has found that a period Of 9% months elapses between the time of copulation and birth. With so long a period Of gestation, many pregnant females are bound to be destroyed under the prevailing system of open and close seasons. It is obvious that unless the trapping season for a fur animal corresponds accurately with its gestation-free period, the close season will not accomplish what it is intended to: the prospective generation will be destroyed along with the one trapped. Even this precaution, however, would be ineffective in the case of the marten or the fisher, for their gestation periods are too long. A 5 or 10-year closed period is necessary to prevent local or even general extermination Of these two fur animals. City populations are apt to forget this fundamental fact and to regard with indifierence bordering at times on scorn agri cultural districts and their workers. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Hints on the Breeding and Rearing of Farm Animals The Author of the following "Hints on the Breeding and Rearing of Animals" had the privilege of reading a paper on the subject in the summer of 1886 to the Fife Farmers' Club. The members present at the meeting expressed a unanimous wish that the paper should be published, and with this wish the author has now (though somewhat late) the pleasure of conforming, but in doing so he has thought it advisable to interpolate (where in his opinion it was advantageous to do so) remarks made by him in other addresses and papers published on various occasions during the last few years. These interpolations are enclosed in brackets. The author, in view of the large amount of public attention recently directed towards the subject, has materially extended his original remarks on abortion. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Theory and Practice of Cattle-Breeding In this little book I have endeavored to gather together such parts of my contributions to the periodical press for a number of years past as seemed to be of sufficient value for the practical breeder to justify a more permanent form. If an earnest effort to do something for my fellow-laborers in the great domain of cattle-breeding needs any justification, I may, perhaps, find it in the kind reception which my occasional writings have met with from the cattle-breeders of the country. I am grateful to them for many years of friendly appreciation, and I offer this digest of my work in the hope that it may prove of some value to them and to those who shall succeed them. I wish to take this opportunity to acknowledge the assistance my sons have given me in preparing all my work for the press. Without their aid much - even most - of it could never have been done. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Mule: A Treatise on the Breeding, Training, and Uses, to Which He May Be Put It has indeed seemed to me that the Government might make a great saving every year by employing only such teamsters and wagon-masters as had been thoroughly instructed in the treatment and management of animals, and were in every way qualified to perform their duties properly. Indeed, it would seem only rea sonable not to trust a man with a valuable team of animals, or perhaps a train, until he had been thoroughly instructed in their use, and had received a certificate of capacity from the Quartermaster's Department. If this were done, it would go far to establish a system that would check that great destruction of animal life which costs the Government so heavy a sum every year.
