Book An Introduction to Manifolds

Download or read book An Introduction to Manifolds written by Loring W. Tu and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2010-10-05 with total page 426 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Manifolds, the higher-dimensional analogs of smooth curves and surfaces, are fundamental objects in modern mathematics. Combining aspects of algebra, topology, and analysis, manifolds have also been applied to classical mechanics, general relativity, and quantum field theory. In this streamlined introduction to the subject, the theory of manifolds is presented with the aim of helping the reader achieve a rapid mastery of the essential topics. By the end of the book the reader should be able to compute, at least for simple spaces, one of the most basic topological invariants of a manifold, its de Rham cohomology. Along the way, the reader acquires the knowledge and skills necessary for further study of geometry and topology. The requisite point-set topology is included in an appendix of twenty pages; other appendices review facts from real analysis and linear algebra. Hints and solutions are provided to many of the exercises and problems. This work may be used as the text for a one-semester graduate or advanced undergraduate course, as well as by students engaged in self-study. Requiring only minimal undergraduate prerequisites, 'Introduction to Manifolds' is also an excellent foundation for Springer's GTM 82, 'Differential Forms in Algebraic Topology'.

Book The Characterization of Finite Elasticities

Download or read book The Characterization of Finite Elasticities written by David J. Grynkiewicz and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022-10-26 with total page 291 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book develops a new theory in convex geometry, generalizing positive bases and related to Carathéordory’s Theorem by combining convex geometry, the combinatorics of infinite subsets of lattice points, and the arithmetic of transfer Krull monoids (the latter broadly generalizing the ubiquitous class of Krull domains in commutative algebra) This new theory is developed in a self-contained way with the main motivation of its later applications regarding factorization. While factorization into irreducibles, called atoms, generally fails to be unique, there are various measures of how badly this can fail. Among the most important is the elasticity, which measures the ratio between the maximum and minimum number of atoms in any factorization. Having finite elasticity is a key indicator that factorization, while not unique, is not completely wild. Via the developed material in convex geometry, we characterize when finite elasticity holds for any Krull domain with finitely generated class group $G$, with the results extending more generally to transfer Krull monoids. This book is aimed at researchers in the field but is written to also be accessible for graduate students and general mathematicians.

Book excerpt: Volume XI of the Transactions on Rough Sets (TRS) provides evidence of f- ther growth in the rough set landscape, both in terms of its foundations and applications. This volume provides further evidence of the number of research streams that were either directly or indirectly initiated by the seminal work on rough 1 sets by Zdzis law Pawlak (1926-2006) . Evidence of the growth of various rough 2 set-based research streams can be found in the rough set database . Book Weighted Automata Formal Power Series and Weighted Logic

Download or read book Weighted Automata Formal Power Series and Weighted Logic written by Laura Wirth and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022-10-13 with total page 191 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The main objective of this work is to represent the behaviors of weighted automata by expressively equivalent formalisms: rational operations on formal power series, linear representations by means of matrices, and weighted monadic second-order logic. First, we exhibit the classical results of Kleene, Büchi, Elgot and Trakhtenbrot, which concentrate on the expressive power of finite automata. We further derive a generalization of the Büchi–Elgot–Trakhtenbrot Theorem addressing formulas, whereas the original statement concerns only sentences. Then we use the language-theoretic methods as starting point for our investigations regarding power series. We establish Schützenberger’s extension of Kleene’s Theorem, referred to as Kleene–Schützenberger Theorem. Moreover, we introduce a weighted version of monadic second-order logic, which is due to Droste and Gastin. By means of this weighted logic, we derive an extension of the Büchi–Elgot–Trakhtenbrot Theorem. Thus, we point out relations among the different specification approaches for formal power series. Further, we relate the notions and results concerning power series to their counterparts in Language Theory. Overall, our investigations shed light on the interplay between languages, formal power series, automata and monadic second-order logic.
