Book Brass Performance and Pedagogy

Download or read book Brass Performance and Pedagogy written by Keith Johnson and published by Pearson. This book was released on 2002 with total page 120 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This complete book presents an approach to playing and teaching brass instruments that is based on the fundamental skills of good listening and good respiratory practices. It emphasizes the importance of developing these and other traditional skills--such as embouchure development, articulation, tone quality, range and stamina--through musical ideas rather than isolating on individual muscular behavior. Careful attention is paid to the natural way in which learning takes place in other skills and shows how such processes may be applied to learning to play a brass instrument. Chapter topics cover the art of teaching, listening, developing a concept of sound, posture, breathing, mouthpiece playing, the warm-up, slurring, intonation, endurance, taking auditions, playing high pitched instruments, performance anxiety, and professional ethics. For teachers who deal with brass students at all stages of development.

Book The Brass Check

    Book Details:
  • Author : Upton Sinclair
  • Publisher : University of Illinois Press
  • Release : 2003
  • ISBN : 9780252071102
  • Pages : 480 pages

Download or read book The Brass Check written by Upton Sinclair and published by University of Illinois Press. This book was released on 2003 with total page 480 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this systematic critique of the structural basis of U.S. media -- arguably the first one ever published -- Upton Sinclair writes that "American journalism is a class institution serving the rich and spurning the poor." Likening journalists to prostitutes, the title of the book refers to a chit that was issued to patrons of urban brothels of the era. Fueled by mounting disdain for newspapers run by business tycoons and conservative editors, Sinclair self-published The Brass Check in the years after The Jungle had made him a household name. Despite Sinclair's claim that this was his most important book, it was dismissed by critics and shunned by reviewers. Yet it sold over 150,000 copies and enjoyed numerous printings. A substantial introduction to this paperback edition by Robert W. McChesney and Ben Scott asserts the book's importance as a cornerstone critique of commercial journalism and a priceless resource for understanding the political turbulence of the Progressive Era.

Book excerpt: The Memoirs of Senator William E. Fears Jr. None of Alfred B. Fear's children, wives or relatives were formally educated except a couple of years in a one room school house, and a whole lot of "hard knock" experience. Earl Jr. knows little of this except he was born in a one room log house built on the Fear's farm, but his family got enough to eat so that he wasn't brain damaged too early. Aunt Myrtle was a beautifully structured woman, and somehow got to New York City, took some kind of secretarial course, and found a secretarial job. She was intelligent, and learned to speak, read, and write proper English. She also learned the proper social amenities of the time. Somehow she met and married a United States Military Academy graduate named Frederick E. Humphreys ¿

Book Music Hall Suite for Brass Quintet

Download or read book Music Hall Suite for Brass Quintet written by and published by . This book was released on 2004-08 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: (Music Sales America). Suite of five pieces for brass quintet: two trumpets, horn, trombone and tuba. Full Score. This work was composed in 1964 at the request of the well known American tuba player Roger Bobo. It was soon taken into the repertoire of the Philip Jones Brass Ensemble, who gave the first BBC broadcast. The first recording was on Pye records, by the Halle Brass Ensemble. Since then it has become a regular repertoire piece and recorded as well as broadcast all over the world. The Suite consists of five movements, all illustrating aspects of the Burlesque Theatre, Music Hall, circus and cabaret, so popular at the end of the 19th century and into the 20th. The titles of the short movements are: Soubrette Song, Trick Cyclists, Adagio Team, Soft Shoe Shuffle and Les Girls. The five orchestral brass instruments (two trumpets, horn, trombone and tuba) are exploited in a chamber music manner, but the cumulative effect has a theatrical quality in keeping with the title.

Book excerpt: In the first major book devoted to the trumpet in more than two decades, John Wallace and Alexander McGrattan trace the surprising evolution and colorful performance history of one of the world's oldest instruments. They chart the introduction of the trumpet and its family into art music, and its rise to prominence as a solo instrument, from the Baroque "golden age," through the advent of valved brass instruments in the nineteenth century, and the trumpet's renaissance in the jazz age. The authors offer abundant insights into the trumpet's repertoire, with detailed analyses of works by Haydn, Handel, and Bach, and fresh material on the importance of jazz and influential jazz trumpeters for the reemergence of the trumpet as a solo instrument in classical music today. Wallace and McGrattan draw on deep research, lifetimes of experience in performing and teaching the trumpet in its various forms, and numerous interviews to illuminate the trumpet's history, music, and players. Copiously illustrated with photographs, facsimiles, and music examples throughout, The Trumpet will enlighten and fascinate all performers and enthusiasts [Publisher description].

Book excerpt: Jim MacLeary has been trying to cope with the loss of his childhood home; the place of his beginning. More than fifty years after he’d said goodbye and left the place of his birth, Jim went back home for the first time. Going back home is a personal pilgrimage made by those who’ve had a childhood home they left behind, by their own free will, or due to adverse circumstances. The continuous thoughts of “Back Home,” has prompted many to repeatedly return to the home of their childhood. Upon arriving, they face the sad reality of not being able to make a reattachment to the home they’d once cherished as their first place of belonging. The place to which they rightfully belong, and which holds lasting sentiments, is no longer welcoming. The joys and pleasures their childhood home had once brought, linger in their minds as unfading memories. Upon arriving back home after his long absence, Jim realized that life in his home village has changed drastically. He had a yearning to see, touch and feel the things that had once contributed to the exuberance of his childhood. He wanted to say hello, and be welcomed by his family, friends and the many acquaintances he’d left behind. Many scenes from Jim’s childhood, and the livelihood he’d once enjoyed, remain indelibly in his mind. While there remains a constant yearning to make a reattachment to the place of his childhood, Jim holds only lasting memories that continually play hide-and-seek with his imagination. Like others who have repeatedly returned home, and have left, Jim realized that he can never return to his childhood home with a feeling of belonging. Jim has been clutching the key to the door of his childhood home. But he sadly realized that he can never use that key to go back home to the place that was once conducive to his childhood existence. From his foreign place of attachment, he’ll continue to reminisce on the joyous pleasures he once had at the place to which he can’t go back with a feeling of belonging. Jim sadly realized that his childhood home exists only as a memory. The Brass Key is a gentle meditation on home and belonging.

Book excerpt: "The Brass Bottle" is a humorous fantasy novel written by F. Anstey (pseudonym of Thomas Anstey Guthrie), published in 1900. Set in late Victorian England, the story follows the misadventures of a young architect, Horace Ventimore. One day, while working on a renovation project, Horace discovers an ancient brass bottle hidden in the rubble. To his astonishment, the bottle contains a trapped and powerful genie named Mr. Josephus Bakkus. Grateful for his release, the grateful genie offers Horace three wishes. However, as it often happens with wishes, they don't go exactly as planned, leading to a series of comedic and unintended consequences. As Horace attempts to navigate the complexities of his newfound powers, he inadvertently brings chaos and hilarity into his life. His wishes, though well-intentioned, lead to absurd situations and challenge his rationality. Among the mishaps are sudden wealth, mistaken identities, and comical misunderstandings that keep the readers entertained. Amidst the chaos, a love interest emerges in the form of the charming Lady Mabel Clare, further complicating Horace's life. Throughout the novel, Anstey masterfully blends elements of farce, satire, and clever wordplay, creating a whimsical and engaging narrative. "The Brass Bottle" is a delightful and witty tale that explores the idea of the consequences of one's desires and the unpredictability of magical powers, leaving readers amused by the peculiarities of human nature and the complexities of wishes gone awry.
