This book was released on 2017-10-20 with total page 656 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from On the Functions of the Brain and of Each of Its Parts Even if I had had no preliminary knowledge, I could not have avoided the inference, that eyes thus formed are the mark Of an excellent memory. It was not till afterwards, that I said to myself, as I have already mentioned in the introduction to my first volume, if memory manifests itself by an external character, why should not the other faculties have their characters outwardly Visible It was this which gave the first impulse to my researches, and which was the occasion of all my discoveries. It will, no doubt, be thought singular, that it is precisely on the subject of this faculty and its organ, that my works are least complete. I shall confine myself wholly to facts. The facts will remain im moveable, even in case my manner of Viewing them should undergo some modifications. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Architecture of the Brain In the following description of the Central Nervous System it is not intended to rehearse minute details which can be fond in the many excellent works upon anatomy, but to place in view in as clear and concise a manner as possible the general architecture of the central nervous system, and to trace the relation and continuity of its parts. When a general knowledge of the structure of the brain is acquired by the student a useful and practical step is gained, because he will not only be able to describe the situation of a lesion and understand the descriptions made by others, but he will be in a situation to intelligently discuss the functions of its parts, and is prepared to work in the field of discovery. The incidental assignment of function to any part of the nervous system in these pages is intended to assist the memory and awaken inquiry. Nothing stimulates the observation to the same extent as the entertainment of a theory, to be demonstrated or corrected by careful observation of facts which fall under one's own notice, or by those which can be obtained from other reliable sources. The following description has been made from dissections by the author, and has been carefully verified by a comparison of longitudinal and lateral dissections, and by sections, all of which agree in proving the correctness of the representations herein described. Book Anatomy of the Brain and Spinal Cord Classic Reprint

Download or read book Anatomy of the Brain and Spinal Cord Classic Reprint written by J. Ryland Whitaker and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-15 with total page 348 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Anatomy of the Brain and Spinal Cord This little book, first written whilst I was a student, still, as formerly, pretends to no originality. Its one aim is and always has been to present, in as clear and simple a manner as possible, an outline of the Central Nervous System to the student, who, for the first time, is brought face to face with this most intricate subject, and to furnish him, to the best of my ability, with those facts which he will find most useful in his future work, and which, let us trust, he will not have soon to unlearn. Although, owing to a sad bereavement, the book was out of print for nearly ten years, it has now reached a fifth edition. 'this, at my age, will, in all probability, be the last as far as I am concerned. In it my one endeav our has been to keep the book as small as before. Any increase in length, apart from the inevitable addition of new matter, being chiefly due to the rewriting and extending of previous descriptions, with the object of rendering obscure passages easier to understand. New tables and recapitulations have also been given to serve for quick and easy reference. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book An Inquiry Into the Functions of the Brain in Man and in the Lower Order of Animals

Download or read book An Inquiry Into the Functions of the Brain in Man and in the Lower Order of Animals written by Richard Harlan and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-08-12 with total page 30 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Inquiry Into the Functions of the Brain in Man, and in the Lower Order of Animals: Delivered as a Lecture Before the Academy of Natural Sciences of Philadelphia The short space of time allotted to these lectures will oblige me to treat of this comprehensive subject in a very cursory manner. I shall not dwell on the physical construction of the brain. To those entirely ignorant of anatomy, it will be sufficient to know, that, like many other glands, it is composed of fibres, cellular membrane, and blood vessels, - and that it is larger in man, in proportion to the nerves which go off from it, than in any other animal. Two principal ideas have been entertained by philosophers, respecting the nature of the brain and its faculties. The argu ments of the first go to prove, that the brain, the seat of the faculties of the mind, is an organ, essentially one and simple in its construction, and producing all its phenomena, by the va rions actions of the same part. They compare the actions of the nervous fibre, to muscular motion; the hand, for instance, is moved by muscular fibres solely; yet how varied and extensive are the applications of this organ. Such analogies are founded in error, and are only calculated to mislead. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Human Brain: Its Structure, Physiology and Diseases; With a Description of the Typical Forms of Brain in the Animal Kingdom To the mind, however, which is unfettered by prejudices in favor of ancient opinions, it appears singular that the enlightened physiologists of the eighteenth century should talk of the medullary and cortical mat ter of an organ in which nothing like marrow or bark can be seen; and it is more extraordinary still, that the accurate distinctions which ana tomy has introduced since the commencement of the nineteenth century, have not demonstrated the evil of retaining terms which are improper, as mere nominal distinctions; but which are doubly erroneous as the relics of an unfounded and exploded theory. Is the error of likening the brain to marrow, obviated by shrouding it under the learned deno mination of medulla and medullary? Or is the absurdity of supposing the gray matter of the convoluted surface, a bark, or envelope to the white pith, diminished in the slightest degree by calling that gray mat ter cortical? The common sense of the present day will not hesitate to answer these questions in the negative. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
