Book The Boys and Girls of the Revolution Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Boys and Girls of the Revolution Classic Reprint written by Charles H. Woodman and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-12 with total page 294 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Boys and Girls of the Revolution Young men and maidens, children, and even babes, played an important part in the war for American independence. From every page of its wonderful history some deed of a puny arm stands out from the sturdy blows that fell so thickly for liberty, or some childish prattle is heard amid the roar of cannon and the noise of war. On every field of strife the blood of children mingled with the blood of grandsires. The first martyr in the cause was a little boy of Boston, whose manly conquest of death was an auspicious opening of the struggle. And in the glorious closing scene at Yorktown, amid the rejoicings of victorious hearts and the tears of conquered heroes, a slight form stepped forth - a mere lad of nineteen - and received the fallen standards of the British Empire. Book Daughters of the Revolution

Download or read book Daughters of the Revolution written by Carolyn Cooke and published by Vintage. This book was released on 2012-06-05 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1968, a clerical mistake threatens the prestigious but cash-strapped Goode School in the small New England town of Cape Wilde. After a century of all-male, old-boy education, the school accidentally admits its first female student: Carole Faust, a brilliant, outspoken, fifteen-year-old black girl whose arrival will have both an immediate and long-term effect on the prep school and everyone in its orbit. There’s the school’s philandering headmaster, Goddard “God” Byrd, who had promised co-education “over his dead body” and who finds his syllabi full of dead white males and patriarchal tradition constantly challenged; there’s EV, the daughter of God’s widowed mistress who watches Carole’s actions as she grows older with wide eyes and admiration; and, finally, there’s Carole herself, who bears the singular challenge of being the First Girl in a world that’s not quite ready to embrace her.

Book Virago Reprints and Modern Classics

Download or read book Virago Reprints and Modern Classics written by D-M Withers and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2021-05-20 with total page 162 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Reprinting, republishing and re-covering old books in new clothes is an established publishing practice. How are books that have fallen out of taste and favour resituated by publishers, and recognised by readers, as relevant and timely? This Element outlines three historical textures within British culture of the late 1970s and early 1980s – History, Remembrance and Heritage – that enabled Virago's reprint publishing to become a commercial and cultural success. With detailed archival case studies of the Virago Reprint Library, Testament of Youth and the Virago Modern Classics, it elaborates how reprints were profitable for the publisher and moved Virago's books - and the Virago brand name - from the periphery of culture to the centre. Throughout Virago's reprint publishing - and especially with the Modern Classics - the epistemic revelation that women writers were forgotten and could, therefore, be rediscovered, was repeated, again and again, and made culturally productive through the marketplace.

Download or read book A Continuous Revolution written by Barbara Mittler and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2020-03-17 with total page 511 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cultural Revolution Culture, often denigrated as nothing but propaganda, was liked not only in its heyday but continues to be enjoyed today. A Continuous Revolution sets out to explain its legacy. By considering Cultural Revolution propaganda art—music, stage works, prints and posters, comics, and literature—from the point of view of its longue durée, Barbara Mittler suggests it was able to build on a tradition of earlier art works, and this allowed for its sedimentation in cultural memory and its proliferation in contemporary China. Taking the aesthetic experience of the Cultural Revolution (1966–1976) as her base, Mittler juxtaposes close readings and analyses of cultural products from the period with impressions given in a series of personal interviews conducted in the early 2000s with Chinese from diverse class and generational backgrounds. By including much testimony from these original voices, Mittler illustrates the extremely multifaceted and contradictory nature of the Cultural Revolution, both in terms of artistic production and of its cultural experience.

Book The Mail and Express Fourth of July Prize Stories and Poems

This book was released on 2018-01-25 with total page 110 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Mail and Express Fourth of July Prize Stories and Poems: Founded on the American Revolution The conditions were that the boys and girls who might compete for the prizes must be not over sixteen years of age, and must be living within fifty miles of New York, and the time expired on Saturday, June 23. A lively interest was soon manifested in the prize'com petition, and the enterprise of the mail and express in instituting it was warmly commended by those best fitted to estimate its beneficial influence upon the young persons who were invited to take part in it. The members of the different boards of education as well as the school teachers of New York and of adjacent cities, gave their hearty approval and endorse ment of the plan. It was the universal opinion of those interested in the subject and qualified to judge of its merits, that the competition would give a marked impetus to a line of study which would be productive of excellent results. Stories and poems soon began to come in from all directions. Notwithstanding that the time allowed for the competition was coincident with that of the preparation for the annual school examination, the young people evidently gave special attention to the study of the history of the Revolutionary War, and when the' time for receiving contributions had ex pired, there was a surprising collection of manuscripts ready for examination. Book excerpt: From the author ofChasing Che, here is the remarkable tale of a group of boys at the heart of Cuba's political and social history. Chosen in the 1940s from among the most affluent and ambitious families in eastern Cuba, they were groomed at the elite Colegio de Dolores for achievement and leadership. Instead, they were swept into war, revolution, and exile by two of their own number, Fidel and Raúl Castro. Trained by Jesuits for dialectical dexterity and the pursuit of absolutes, Fidel Castro swiftly destroyed the old Cuba they had come from, down to the hallways of Dolores itself. At once sweeping and intimate, this remarkable history by Patrick Symmes is a tour de force investigation of the world that gave birth to Fidel Castro – and the world his Cuban Revolution leaves behind.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Our Boys and Girls, 1871 BY the time I was ready to open my trunk, the steamer had settled upon the bottom of the river, which was not very deep at this point. Finding the boat was going down no farther, I dragged my trunk up into the cabin. I do not believe in making a fuss when there is no occasion for a fuss. My property was safe, and so far as I was able to judge, my fel low-passengers were equally fortunate. A few of the ladies insisted upon screaming, even after the danger was passed; but it is their prerogative to scream, and no one had a right to object. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Newly updated: The bestseller “that could bring the human race a little closer to rescuing itself” from the subject of the film The Two Glorias (Naomi Wolf). Without self-esteem, the only change is an exchange of masters; with it, there is no need for masters. When trying to find books to give to “the countless brave and smart women I met who didn’t think of themselves as either brave or smart,” Steinem realized that books either supposed that external political change would cure everything or that internal change would. None linked internal and external change together in a seamless circle of cause and effect, effect and cause. She undertook to write such a book, and ended up transforming her life, as well as the lives of others. The result of her reflections is this truly transformative book: part personal collection of stories from her own life and the lives of many others, part revolutionary guide to finding community and inspiration. Steinem finds role models in a very young and uncertain Gandhi as well as unlikely heroes from the streets to history. Revolution from Within addresses the core issues of self-authority and unjust external authority, and argues that the first is necessary to transform the second. This ebook features an illustrated biography of Gloria Steinem including rare images from the author’s personal collection, as well as a new preface and list of book recommendations from Steinem.
