Book excerpt: The “wise, wildly funny story” of a self-destructive writer’s lost weekend by a Pulitzer Prize–winning, New York Times–bestselling author (Chicago Tribune). A wildly successful first novel made Grady Tripp a young star, and seven years later he still hasn’t grown up. He’s now a writing professor in Pittsburgh, plummeting through middle age, stuck with an unfinishable manuscript, an estranged wife, a pregnant girlfriend, and a talented but deeply disturbed student named James Leer. During one lost weekend at a writing festival with Leer and debauched editor Terry Crabtree, Tripp must finally confront the wreckage made of his past decisions. Mordant but humane, Wonder Boys features characters as loveably flawed as any in American fiction. This ebook features a biography of the author.

Book Boy Wonder Valancourt 20th Century Classics

Download or read book Boy Wonder Valancourt 20th Century Classics written by James Robert Baker and published by . This book was released on 2020-01-14 with total page 468 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Told in the form of interviews with those who knew and hated him, this hilarious and irreverent mockumentary recounts the rise and fall of notorious Hollywood producer Shark Trager. As a young man, Shark had dreams of directing artistic movies, but when his film school project is savaged by a snobby French critic, Shark turns instead to producing exploitative trash, the more shocking and outrageous the better. Fueled by a nonstop supply of sex and drugs, Shark's life and work become increasingly bizarre and erratic. Yet we meet a different side of Shark too, as we learn how he saved a group of Sunday school teachers held hostage by terrorists, prevented a horrific attack on Nancy Reagan by a sex-crazed donkey, and single-handedly took out a squad of dangerous neo-Nazis posing as disabled schoolchildren. It all leads up to a wild and explosive finale when, against all odds, one of Shark's films finds itself a contender for the Academy Awards--but the ceremony doesn't go exactly according to plan ... Riotously funny, wickedly politically incorrect, and completely impossible to put down, James Robert Baker's satire of the film industry Boy Wonder (1988), long revered as a cult classic, returns to print at last in this new edition, which includes an afterword by his partner, Ron Robertson. "[A]mphetamine-drenched, violence-riddled, sex-steeped . . . an exhilarating read." -- John Keilman, Chicago Tribune "Wild invention, bizarre plot twists . . . a raunchy, funny, savvy tale." -- Kirkus Reviews

Book excerpt: "In this intimate and humorous memoir about how childhood passions shape our adult selves, Cathal Kelly probes his youthful obsessions--from Star Wars to the Blue Jays, The Lord of the Rings to The Smiths. Vividly recalling a time when wearing a zippered, chainmail-laden Michael Jackson jacket seemed like a good idea, and The Beachcombers--"an adventure show about logging"--Seemed to make sense, Kelly recounts growing up in the 1980s in a working-class Irish household as the son of a tough Catholic mother and a largely absent and abusive alcoholic father. Navigating an often fraught and always bewildering youth, Kelly sought refuge in comics, books, bands, games, movies and TV. But looking back, he realizes that his obsession with Dungeons and Dragons or Who Framed Roger Rabbit was never just about the game or movie, but about the joy in discovery and the creation of an identity."--

Life is a struggle to make ends meet, but he does not mind. When his mother decides to take a lodger to help pay the bills, he watches with interest as she freshens up their small apartment with new wallpaper and a sofa paid for in installments. He befriends their new male lodger, whose television is more tempting to him than his mother would like. When a half sister whom he never knew joins the household, Finn takes her under his wing over an everlasting summer on Håøya Island. But he can't understand why everyone thinks his new sister is so different from every other child. Nor can he fathom his mother's painful secret, one that pushes them ever farther apart. As summer comes to a close, Finn must attempt to grasp the incomprehensible adult world and his place within it. Child Wonder is a powerful and unsentimental portrait of childhood. Roy Jacobsen, through the eyes of a child, has produced an immensely uplifting novel that shines with light and warmth.

Download or read book Working Wonders written by Wen Shaoxian and published by Everflow Publications. This book was released on 2011-05-01 with total page 325 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Working Wonders, the second book of Fragrant Port trilogy, tells of the story of how some orphans, survivors of the World War II, overcome all kinds of difficulties and hardships and succeed in initiating their business undertakings in post-War times. Swan Ko, grandson of Third Sister, Brown’s former amah, becomes an orphan after the War. He starts from working as a child laborer. Then he cooperates with a HK British company and invents the multi-layer contractor system, which lays down the foundation of the building industry of Hong Kong at the beginning of the 1960s when it begins to vigorously develop. Swan’s ambition is to surpass the Hong Kong British firms financially in order to bring credit to the Hong Kong Chinese. During the revolt of the Leftists in 1967, he employs the tactics of ‘buying in while others deserting’ and buys in large quantities of land and premises at low prices. During the very flourishing stock market period in 1972-73, he issues new stocks for a number of times to raise sufficient funds so that his company can develop by leaps and bounds. During the serious stock disaster in 1974-75, he continues to buy in large amounts of land for building and old buildings at low prices. After having accumulated strength silently and secretly for about 20 years in this way, he finally defeats Hong Kong Real Estate Co., Ltd., the number one century-old HK British land developing company, winning the bid for the right to develop the upper roof of the Grand Wharf in Central. This brilliant feat amazes the public and he is thus well-known overnight. On the other hand, Brown’s Watton & Co., Ltd. merges with Whymper Docks after having undergone radical ups and downs in the political and economic crises during this period. The merger company, however, is still unable to extricate itself from financial difficulties. With the assistance of Lora, his wife, Swan succeeds in purchasing the firm. Swan becomes the first Hong Kong Chinese who takes over a traditional Hong Kong British big firm. Thus, the traditional Hong Kong British companies’ monopoly of the economy of Hong Kong for more than a century is broken. Swan’s love experience is also varied with twists and turns. Lydia Lee, a half-breed, Swan’s primary schoolmate, close partner in initiating their undertakings and girlfriend, suddenly turns out to be his elder sister of the same father with different mothers, while Lora Hocking, who has one-sided love for him secretly, is discovered to be Lydia’s younger sister of the same mother with different fathers. She is found to be the illegitimate daughter of Mark Cooper, taipan of Whymyer Docks. As a matter of fact, these relations are fabricated by some people designed to cover up a past tragedy created by the older generations. The background time of the novel is set from the conclusion of World War II in 1945 to 1982, some time before the British and Chinese governments began talks on the future of Hong Kong. During this period there were the Korean War and US embargo on China in early 1950s, the revolt of the Leftists in 1967, the serious stock disaster in 1974-75, the world petroleum crises in 1974-75, and the world shipping industry crises in early 1980s.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “A poet celebrates the wonders of nature in a collection of essays that could almost serve as a coming-of-age memoir.” —Kirkus Reviews As a child, Nezhukumatathil called many places home: the grounds of a Kansas mental institution, where her Filipina mother was a doctor; the open skies and tall mountains of Arizona, where she hiked with her Indian father; and the chillier climes of western New York and Ohio. But no matter where she was transplanted—no matter how awkward the fit or forbidding the landscape—she was able to turn to our world’s fierce and funny creatures for guidance. “What the peacock can do,” she tells us, “is remind you of a home you will run away from and run back to all your life.” The axolotl teaches us to smile, even in the face of unkindness; the touch-me-not plant shows us how to shake off unwanted advances; the narwhal demonstrates how to survive in hostile environments. Even in the strange and the unlovely, Nezhukumatathil finds beauty and kinship. For it is this way with wonder: it requires that we are curious enough to look past the distractions in order to fully appreciate the world’s gifts. Warm, lyrical, and gorgeously illustrated by Fumi Nakamura, World of Wonders is a book of sustenance and joy. Book The Wonder of Boys

Download or read book The Wonder of Boys written by Michael Gurian and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2006-09-07 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "THE WONDER OF BOYS is a provocative book that electrifies the debate over how this nation raises sons." — USA Today In this insightful and practical book, Michael Gurian describes what boys need to become strong, responsible, sensitive men. Instead of encouraging us to stifle boys' natural propensities for competition and aggression, Gurian offers effective and practical guidelines for channeling them. He shows how the evils boys are susceptible to, including gang activity, sexual misconduct, and crime, become necessary outlets when positive role models and adult support are not available. Most important, Gurian explains what a boy really needs--a primary and an extended family, relationships with mentors, and intense support form his school and community--and details how we can provide these things for the boys we love.
