Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Boy's Book of New Inventions In the preparation of this book the author has tried to give an interesting account of the invention and workings of a few of the machines and mechanical processes that are making the history of our time more wonderful and more dramatic than that of any other age since the world began. For heroic devotion to science in the face of danger and the scorn of their fellowmen, there is no class who have made a better record than inventors. Most inventions, too, are far more than scientific calculation, and it is the human story of the various factors in this great age of invention that is here set forth for boy readers. New discoveries, or new applications of forces known to exist, illustrating some broad principle of science, have been the chief concern of the author in choosing the subjects to be taken up in the various chapters, so that it has been necessary to limit the scope of the book, except in one or two instances, to inventions that have come into general use within the last ten years. Book Inventing for Boys Classic Reprint

Download or read book Inventing for Boys Classic Reprint written by Archie Frederick Collins and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-09-17 with total page 294 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Inventing for Boys These are the real pleasures of inventing but to make a success of it you have to drop back to earth again and take up the mean, the sordid part, and that is to try to make money out of it. And if you have an invention of merit you will have to forget that you are a demi-god and become a hard and fast mortal again or it will not be long before some other body owns it lock, barrel and stock; and then you will have a chance to start another idea rolling and to build up another invention. In this book I have tried to point out to you not only how to invent, but how to make money out of your invention as well, and so, I say unto you, from the moment the big idea strikes you be as gentle as a dove and as wise as a serpent, to the end that your days as an inventor may be long and that any profits which may accrue from your invention will be yours instead of some one's else. And now may peace be With you. A. Frederick collins. Lyndon Arms, 524 Riverside Drive, New York City. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Stories of Invention

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Stories of Invention: Told by Inventors and Their Friends The reader may or may not have seen these books, so much the worse for him if he have not, but that omis sion of his may be easily repaired. There are four of them stories OF war told by Soldiers stories OF the sea told by Sailors; stories OF adventure told by Ad venturers stories OF discovery told by Discoverers. Since the regular meetings began, of which these books are the history, the circle of visitors has changed more or less, as most circles will, in five years. Some of those who met are now in another world. Some of the boys have grown to be so much like men, that they are subw duing the world, as Uncle Fritz would say, in their several places, and that they write home, from other latitudes and longitudes, of the Discoveries and Adventures in which they have themselves been leaders. But younger sisters and brothers take the places of older brothers and sisters. The club -for it really is one is popular, Lady Oliver's house is large, and Uncle Fritz is hospitable. He says himself that there is always room for more; and Ellen Flaherty, or whoever else is the reigning queen in the kitchen, never complains that the demand is too great for her waffles. The history is often a painful one. Book Thomas Alva Edison

Download or read book Thomas Alva Edison written by E. C. Kenyon and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-25 with total page 130 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Thomas Alva Edison: The Telegraph-Boy Who Became a Great Inventor It is said that there was a very special love between Mrs Edison and her son Thomas. She loved his very presence, and partly for that reason, and partly because of the poverty which came upon them before long, she kept the boy at home, and, except for two months' school ing, taught him entirely herself. With her he learned not only reading, writing, and arithmetic, but also the great object of learning. For she implanted in his mind a love of learning, a hunger for knowledge, which is the end of all true education. To her young Edison owed the early teaching and training which gave his mind its strong bent towards invention and enterprise. His father, too, was so interested in the boy's education, that, by way of encouraging him to read, whilst reading was for Tom a toilsome and difficult matter, he paid him for every book he perused. Happy boy, to have such parents! Their intelligent sympathy, and the tuition of the mother, caused him to become a great reader, and then practically he took his education into his own hands, and read every thing he came across.
