Book excerpt: In the forests above timberline across North America lives a ferocious carnivore that hunts as a solitary predator, seldom seen because of its stealthy and cunning character. The heavy-bodied and short legged Wolverine is known for its legendary refusal to back down in a fight. With strength, shrewdness and fearlessness it often challenges animals much larger than itself.Listening to the legends and the rare stories of encounters with this fearsome creature can cause the hair on the back of your neck to bristle from fear. But is the Wolverine simply a lonely predator with unprecedented ferocity or is there a mysterious and hidden character to his cunningness that is blended with gentleness, compassion and a need to belong? The Boy and the Wolverine offers a hidden side of this feared and mysterious creature and the unusual and yet intimate relationship that grows between Predator and Boy. The deep friendship that develops between these two unlikely characters suggests that even in the midst of fierceness and timidity is a longing inherent in all creatures for love, kindness, and compassion that overcomes impossible obstacles and creates a mysterious bond. The Boy and the Wolverine reveals how love and compassion in a world that is filled with fear, loneliness and hopelessness, is more powerful than any fear that we might have of the unknown that often grips us with legendary ferocity or disabling timidity.

The grandfather has a deep love for his grandson, imparting his wisdom of the forests, mountains and wildlife gained from many years as a hunting guide in far-northern Alaska. Every experience the two share becomes a learning opportunity for the grandfather to teach his grandson through his back-country experience and wise counsel. Their learning experience increases when they rescue a critically injured wolverine and begin to descend through the mountain forest to the village below. The grandfather discovers they are being stalked and pursued by a ferocious pack of predatory wolves who savaged the wolverine's family, leaving him critically wounded. Book Wolverine Myths and Visions

Download or read book Wolverine Myths and Visions written by Patrick Moore and published by U of Nebraska Press. This book was released on 1990-01-01 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The people who call themselves Den Dha¾, a group of the Athapaskan-speaking natives of northwestern Canada known as the Slave or Slavey Indians, now number about one thousand and occupy three reserves in northwestern Alberta. Because their settlements were until recently widely dispersed and isolated, they have maintained their language and traditions more successfully than most other Indian groups. This collection of their stories, recorded in the Dene language with literal interlinear English glosses and in a free English translation, represents a major contribution to the documentation of the Dene language, ethnography, and folklore. The stories center on two animal people, Wolf, who often helps people in Dene myth and whom traditional members of the tribe still so respect that they do not trap wolves for fur; and Wolverine, a trickster and cultural transformer much like Coyote in the Navajo tradition or Raven in Northwest Coast traditions. "Wolverine" is also the name of the leader of the messianic Tea Dance that took hold among the Dene people early in the twentieth century. His visions and the accounts of his life, which are included here along with the traditional tales, show how the old myths have been transfigured but continue to pervade the Dene world-view.

Book excerpt: Wolverine. Logan. Weapon X. By any name, Marvel Comic's savage, brooding antihero is, in his own words, the best at what he does--killing with gratuitous precision. Paradoxically violent yet humane, the beer-swilling, cigar-smoking mutant with retractable claws is universally misjudged in the Marvel Universe yet esteemed by fans worldwide. The author explores Wolverine's development from bit character to modern legend over more than four decades, with a focus on his enduring appeal as an allegory for resilience through torment.
