Tunayoshi period, 1681-1708. 1105 Writing Box (suzuri bako A specimen of lacquer on wood in a style both curious and rare. The scene on the lid is that of the Stag and the Maple; that on the interior a mountainous landscape. Date 1681-1716 9J in. by 8 in. 1106 Despatch Box (jo bako) The surface is of diaper pattern with eight TciJni, crests introduced. The work is of exquisite finish, by Shunsho the 2nd. Tsunayoshi period, 1681-1708. 1107 Small Dish (kozara) Of quatre-foil shape, with aquatic plants, and a running stream in raised gold lacquer on a ground of nashiji, by Koami, an artist of the time of Tsunayoshi, 1681-1708. 1108 Cake Tray Section of bamboo, slightly varnished with lacquer, and ornamented with a branch of awoi, executed in pewter and mother o'-pearl. Of the Korin School, 1688-1808. Diameter 5f in. 1109 Sweetmeat Box (kwashi bachi) The form that of a mandarin cluck. Book excerpt: In the years following Japan's long period of self-imposed isolation from the world, Japan developed a new relationship with the West, and especially with Britain, where relations grew to be particularly close. The Japanese, embarrassed by their perceived comparative backwardness, looked to the West to learn modern industrial techniques, including the design and engineering skills which underpinned them. At the same time, taking great pride in their own culture, they exhibited and sold high quality products of traditional Japanese craftsmanship in the West, stimulating a thirst for, and appreciation of, Japanese arts and crafts. This book examines the two-way bridge-building cultural exchange which took place between Japan and Britain in the years after 1859 and into the early years of the twentieth century. Topics covered include architecture, industrial design, prints, painting and photographs, together with a consideration of Japanese government policy, the Japan-Britain Exhibition of 1910, and commercial spin-offs. In addition, there are case studies of key individuals who were particularly influential in fostering British-Japanese cultural bridges in this period.

The authors provide evidence that many of the national heroes, villains, rulers, nobles, traders, merchants, bishops, guild members, burgesses, and ministers of Scotland were of Jewish descent, their ancestors originating in France and Spain. Much of the traditional historical account of Scotland, it is proposed, rests on fundamental interpretive errors, perpetuated in order to affirm Scotland's identity as a Celtic, Christian society. A more accurate and profound understanding of Scottish history has thus been buried.
