Book excerpt: Annie Besant, one of the most intellectual women of this age, publicly announced her failure to find truth in the current wave of scientific materialism. Having entered upon the royal highway of true Freethought, she now stands on a secure spot, wherein every collateral path lies in the sunlight of Truth in Nature, and where no personal preconception, no partisan fanaticism, is ever permitted to overshadow it. Our Deity is a universal, Absolute Principle manifesting in Humanity as in Nature, the Spirit in both being one and inseparable, hence the true Spiritual Brotherhood of Man. There is a darkness thrown over the heathen word “theosophy” through the fanciful etymology it has been given in dictionaries compiled by monotheistic lexicographers. Slander and malicious poppycock levelled against Theosophists. From the London “Globe,” the “Weekly Times and Echo,” the “Christian Commonwealth,” a spiritualistic “weekly,” the “Evening Express” of Liverpool Our sincerest condolences to the Chief of the Detective Department of the Government of India. The antipathy between the Russian and British Governments is fanned by the Conservative party. English books proscribed in Russia. Angels and ministers of grace, defend us! A poor boast dictated by wounded vanity. From the New York “Sunday Times.” Beware! He who makes of the Science of sciences a sinful pretext for worldly motives should tremble. The Theosophical Ideal is so high, that few will fully realize. For the true Theosophist is he who makes Theosophy a living power in his life. From a “Pall Mall” interview of Grant Allen. Great minds think alike! From the “Methodist Times” and their Madras ally, the “Christian College Magazine” Amuck! In the name of Christ! An old fugue in the orchestra of slander. False accusations lavished on innocent men and women when the life and reputation of such became a danger to those who envied or feared them. More from the firebrand of the American Free Methodist Church and civic ethics from a French vivisector. Madame Blavatsky appeals to the law. The Theosophical Society and its detractors. À tous les Membres to la Société Théosophique en France. To all the Members of the Theosophical Society in France. The allegations that Madame Blavatsky was a Russian spy were quietly dropped.

A street peddler harasses the pair until they finally buy an old book. The old book turns out to be a mysterious, hand-written journal with magical powers. They take the diary to a professor who can translate, and he seems to think the journal is quite old and might even contain maps of ancient Jerusalem. Dan and Sue soon find a foreigner closely related to the journal, and together, they uncover the secrets of a bewitched monastery in the Caracoram Mountains and an enormous cave illuminated by an enchanted light. Book Ces forces obscures de l me

Download or read book Ces forces obscures de l me written by Christine Margerrison and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2008-01-01 with total page 356 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first major investigation of Camus’s prose fiction to explore the developing presentation of women, from the author’s earliest writings to his last, unfinished novel. Avoiding the traditional relegation of this subject to an emotional or private sphere, it traces Camus’s intellectual development in order to demonstrate the centrality of this subject to Camus’s work as a whole. If the Absurd, constructed over the body of the “real” woman, liberates the writer to follow a “true path” of literary creation, the impending loss of his Algerian homeland impells a return to “all that he had not been free to choose”, the ties of blood. These conflictual and unresolved ties are here investigated, in conjunction with the presentation of mythical female figures expressing Camus’s darkest fears, partly voiced in other writings, concerning that “other” Algeria for which he would never fight. Exploring complex interconnections between sexuality, “race” and colonialism, this volume is pertinent to all who are interested in the writings of Camus, particularly those seeking relevant new ways of approaching his work.

Book Essenced to Language

Download or read book Essenced to Language written by Nayef Al-Joulan and published by Peter Lang. This book was released on 2007 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rosenberg was more than just a war poet. A general failure to take this into consideration has contributed to the belated recognition of the distinctions of his work. A working-class London Jew, he schooled himself, long before the Great War, to respond to issues of class, culture, art and poetry; a combination of dependency and self-sufficiency which sustains his mature work, and which gave him a sense of himself as an Anglo-Jewish poet. To illuminate Rosenberg, Nayef Al-Joulan considers the conditions of the Jewish community in the East End of London at the turn of the century and examines the writer's attitudes to the Zionism in vogue. He also investigates striking echoes of Freudian psychology in Rosenberg's work. Tracing Rosenberg's working-class literary heritage, Al-Joulan underlines a modern Jewish insight that has parallels with Marx and Freud and therefore uncovers the role class and race played in the critical marginalising of Rosenberg. The book concludes by examining Rosenberg's cognitive ekphrasis, his idea of language as a vehicle for mental essence, a perception rooted into the painter's mind.
